THE SELECT AWARD
Often at a National Specialty the number of qualitydogs in competition far exceeds the number of top awards available. The judge must choose onlyone Best of Breed and one Best of Opposite Sex The awarding of a Select Rosette acknoWedges that the animal was under consideration for Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex The judge is indicating her recognition of an exceptional animal who could, on another day merit a top award.
The American Whippet Club allows for ten Select Awards to be presented in addition to Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex The judge may, at her discretion, award all or none of the rosettes. Receiving a Select Award is indeed a significant honor.

Margaret P. Newcombe
Hello to all, I have been asked to write a Bio on myself, which is a task in itself, as I am not quite sure where to begin?? I guess we begin with my grandfather and my mother...Both had dogs, as well as my uncle, so I was born into a doggie environment of several different breeds. Chow Chows, Sealyhams, as well as several other terrier breeds. Labradors and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were always at my grandfather's place, and my uncle had Samoyeds at his house. It's no wonder in the very beginning, I had a variety kennel.
I started out with American Cocker Spaniels, of which I bred several champions, Ch. Clairedale Sea Biscuit was one of my most famous ones. I used my mother's kennel name Clairedale, because I did not have one until 1940!!!! I decided to call my kennel "PENNYWORTH". My last name was Penney, so I looked up in the dictionary the word penny, and low and behold was the word pennies worth, which means to get your monies worth!!! My kennel name now would be PENNYWORTH KENNELS. I sure have gotten and given my Pennies Worth...
I have bred and raised Greyhounds, Whippets, English Cockers, Chow Chows, and West Highland White Terriers. Their have been several Champions of other breeds at Pennyworth. I have been very proud to own, the Standard Poodle Ch. Alfonco Von Der Golden Kette, a German import. The English Cocker Ch. Elbilac Bugle of Halstern, both of these were Best in Show and Specialty winners. The Greyhound's Eng. & Am. Ch. Camlanga Caramel of Pennyworth, Eng. & Am. Ch. Treetops Raven of Pennyworth, & Eng. & Am. Ch. Parancady Heatherbelle, each of these Greyhounds made me proud of them...by proving in the American ring, they were as good as I thought they were. There were 3 other Greyhounds that were Pennyworth home bred, and they were Ch. Pennyworth Peat, Ch. Pennyworth Repeat & Ch. Pennyworth Etcetera. All of the Greyhounds mentioned above were not only Breed winners...but also numerous groups...Best in Shows... & Specialty Best in Show winners. Cockers were my first breed, but I soon realized that they were not my thing, and found the Whippet at a show on Long Island, with a wonderful lady, Mrs. Marjory Anderson, of the Mardormere Fame. They were so completely different, they were captivating and I found they were such a wonderful breed to live with. They were like peanuts...you couldn't have just ONE!!!! Hence Pennyworth became famous for it's Whippets... The most famous of these were Eng. & Am. Ch. Courtenay Fleetfoot of Pennyworth and his daughter Ch. Pennyworth Mother Goose. Down thru the years Ch. Seagift Penniesworth, Ch. Tantivvey Diver of Pennyworth, Ch. Pennyworth Would You Believe, and Fleetfoots great, great granddaughter, Ch. Wilcare's Aged In Wood. There are S0000 many others that helped to keep Pennyworth moving forward, I am truly grateful to all of them!!!!
I love to Judge or just sit and watch dogs in the ring. I like to pick out the one I think is the Best of the Rest. I love most of all to see a dog that is so truly exceptional...it gives you goose-bumps!!!! Their were two of these at Westminster this year!!! I have judged all over the world, and have seen some wonderful dogs over the years...I would not trade any of it for the world. My eye for a dog and my hands have been the greatest gift, the good Lord gave to me, for without them I would not have found these marvelous dogs!!!!
At this time I would like to Thank all my true friends over the years for sticking with me, even through the good and bad, they stuck with me. I would also like to say Thank-You to all my handler friends who taught me right from wrong, and who were so very helpful in so many ways...
Last but not least, I want all the wonderful dogs now in DOGGIE HEAVEN, and the ONES still here with us, to know how very much I appreciated knowing each and everyone of them, and I Thank them all for the many hours of Fun and Happiness...we had together.
God Bless
Sincerely,
Peggy Newcombe, Pennyworth

It all started quite simply in 1961 when we picked up a 10 month old German Shepherd bitch from a Veterinarian, sort of a "rescue" effort. Little did we know where this would lead us. We started, like so many others in a local Obedience Training Club where some of the instructors showed in both obedience and breed. Through the inspiration of some trainers we continued on after the initial beginning class and eventually ended up with the coveted Utility Dog Degree. She was a wonderful German Shepherd. We fell in love with the West Highland White Terrier when we saw a German Shepherd and a Westie doing an obedience brace.
Luck was with us and we found a great breeder of Westies and Lhasa Apsos from which we purchased a puppy. This wonderful Westie went on to win both his Utility title and his Breed Championship. "Twinkles" was an all around dog, being shown in breed, obedience and junior showmanship, sometimes running from one ring to another. After this we bred and showed Westies and Lhasa Apsos in the breed, and trained and showed several various breeds in obedience.
At some point in time I was asked to judge an Obedience Match and really enjoyed myself. Other Match assignments followed and I applied and started judging Obedience in 1968. I now judge all Obedience Classes, 14 breeds and Junior Showmanship.
I am active in several breed clubs being President and Obedience Chairman of the Elgin Kennel Club. I am also on the Show Committee of the International Kennel Club of Chicago where I am the Obedience Chairman.
Most weekends we are at a dog show, either judging, stewarding or doing some of the various jobs required. I am looking forward to judging Obedience at the 2003 American Whippet Club Specialty.

JUDGE: Jean Balint

I was born in England and came with my husband and son to the USA in 1969. I became a Whippet lover and owner in May of 1969. Using the kennel name of Wyndsor I bred my first litter in 1970. From that litter I got my first two AKC show champions.
In the early years I was very involved in both showing and racing. Due my work and trying to raise a family I realized that I could not do both. In order to
give more time to my family I decided to limit showing and continue racing my dogs. Racing has been my passion and my love for the past 30 years.
My first judging assignment was doing the Sweepstakes at the prestigious Santa Barbara Specialty. This was back in 1972. Since then I have judged many sweepstakes and matches. I have also judged on three different occasions at our AWC National Specialty. I can sincerely say that all my assignments have been greatly enjoyed.
To be asked to judge the Veteran Sweepstakes is a dream come true. I cannot put into words the thrill and excitement I feel being given the tremendous honor. I would like to thank the 2003 Show Committee for giving me the privilege of judging these wonderful senior stars. I am looking forward to it with great anticipation.
I wish you all a most successful and memorable National Specialty.

I am glad to be selected to judge our Altered classes at the National this year. Thank you to all who entered their dogs. My personal opinion is that Altered animals should have a venue to "Show their stuff' so to speak, This I feel would be a different sort of breed improvement.
For many years I have been member of the A.W.C. and was a Great Western Whippet Association board member and past president here in Southern California. During the past 28 years I have participated in conformation, obedience, agility, lure coursing, straight and oval track racing with my whippets. There is nothing as thrilling as watching whippets do what they like best, running free out in the open.
For the past 20 years I have been involved with creating whippet art work in several different mediums including porcelain, ceramic and leather. Some of my works have been on display at the A.K.0 . Dog Museum in St. Louis and at The ART Show At The Dog Show in Kansas.
I grew up with Sighthounds, specifically Afghan Hounds. My parents loved the look and clownish personality of the breed. Our first dog Mona, was a Creme colored Afghan who had juvenile cataracts and was blind by 6 months of age. To our horror, she would regularly escape our yard and run blindly through the streets of La Habra. Surprisingly, Mona lived to be 14. When I was in the third grade we moved to Long Beach, California. Our family bought a black masked silver Afghan named Sinbad. I showed him at the Long Beach City Pet show and won a first prize for most unusual dog when I was 16. When I was about 18 I bought a German Shepherd puppy, and named her Lady. It became apparent after a few months, that she most likely was a Doberman Shepherd cross. I trained Lady and showed her in obedience competitions. In the early 70's while learning to groom dogs at The Seal Beach Pet Shop I met Bob Maresca who worked next door as the Postmaster for the U.S.P.S. He had Sea Aire Whippets that he raced and showed. When I lost my Lady to hip displaysia, I decided to get a Whippet. Bob took me to see some whippet puppies bred by Isabell Stoffers of Staffers Running Ranch. I bought my first whippet, "Sadie", Runner's Little Lady Roar from Mrs. Stoffers in March 1975. She was my first show dog and I spoiled her rotten. Of course, she didn't want any part of dog shows after that so I bred her, She was mated to then class dog Mojo's Sage-mark of Hillendale. This breeding produced my first homebred Champion, 'Dolly", Ch Sonsteby's I Told You So. She took her first points under Mrs. Doris Wear at the A.W.C. Eastern specialty held at Mrs. Wear's Enterprise Farm– what a thrill! Dolly was the dam of "Ivory", Ch Sonsteby's The Right Stuff (by BIS Ch Runner's He's the Continental) . She in turn was the dam of two specialty winners for me: SBIS Ch Sonsteby's The Smooth Character, (by Ch Delacreme De La Renta) and Ch. Sonsteby's Ninety-Six Tears (by Ch Saxon Shore Amber Waves)
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to be a part of the 2003 A.W.C. National.
Judge: Del Wasso

I was drawn to this breed while still a high school student, way back in the very early 60's.
I worked at the stockyards in Chicago to earn spending money during my summer vacations & special events such as the IKC dog shows & various livestock shows.
It was at the IKC dog shows that I saw my first whippets & fell head over heels in love with the breed.
I have had limited successes in Showing, Racing & Lure Coursing. I firmly believe that a breeds future rests in keeping faith with it's history & it's heritage!
I am a founding member, past officer/board member of the Greater Chicago Whippet Club (GCWC).
Past member of both Mid West Coursing Club (MWCC) and Wind Chasers L/Coursing Club.
Past member, officer & board member of Stone City KC. Member & cofounder of Midwest Whippet Racing Association (MWRA).
