9th Annual AWC Triathlon

The AWC Triathlon competition was developed to recognize whippets that excel in three areas of competition: conformation, lure coursing and obedience or agility. The 9th annual competition is open to all whippets entered in eligible Conformation, Obedience/Agility and Lure Coursing Classes/Stakes at the 2003 AWC National Specialty in Crystal Lake, Illinois. To acknowledge the dogs that excel in all three areas of competition, there will be 10 placement awards.

2003 AWC NATIONAL TRIATHLON RULES AND SCORING

The total scores for all three events will be added together. At the end of the week, the dog with the highest point total will be declared the 2003 Triathlon Champion.

CONFORMATION: The base score for the Conformation Event is determined by the judge's numeric evaluation of the dog in the Triathlon Conformation Class utilizing the breed standard as 100 points. The judge's score is recorded on the Conformation Score Sheet (100 points maximum). Dogs do not compete against each other in this class for placements. The Triathlon Chairman will handle the automatic entry.

LURE COURSING: The base score for the Lure Coursing Event is the total final score. (400 maximum OBEDIENCE: The base score for the Obedience Event is the highest total points earned in any single-dog entry Obedience Trial Class. NOTE: Non-qualifying scores are utilized in calculating the total score.

AGILITY: As an option, TWO Agility scores (any Jumpers and any Standard class) may be substituted for an Obedience score. The total score of 200 maximum points can be used instead of an Obedience Score. Entries in both Agility and Obedience are acceptable and encouraged. The high score will be used.

BONUS POINTS: There will be no Bonus Points awarded. The Total of the raw Scores will be used. Only if in the case of a tie will any placements be counted. They will be given points of 4, 3, 2, and 1 for First through Fourth Place awarded in a four-dog or more class. Only 1 point will be awarded for a one-dog class, 2 points and 1 point for a two-dog class, and 3 points, 2 points, and 1 point for a three-dog class. HIT and BIF are tie-breakers.

Novice Agility & Novice Jumpers With Weaves Classes: The Novice Agility Class and the Novice Jumpers With Weaves Class are divided into divisions A and B. Division A is for dogs that have never acquired any AKC Agility title. Additionally, a dog entered in Novice A must be handled by a person that has never put an AKC Agility title on any dog, and the handler must be the Owner, Co-owner, or a member of the Owner's household. Handlers that co-own a dog and have never put an AKC Agility title on a dog may enter the Novice A Class regardless of the other co-owner's AKC Agility accomplishments. Dogs eligible for Novice A may be entered in the Novice B Class at the discretion of the Owner.

Division B is for dogs that have acquired the Novice Agility title, or the Novice Jumpers With Weaves title, or for persons who have handled a dog to any AKC Agility title, and for dogs being handled by someone other than the Owner, Co-Owner, or household member subject to the restrictions listed above. A dog may continue to be shown in the Novice A Class until they have acquired a qualifying score towards their Open title. Whenever the Novice Class is offered, both Divisions A and B must be offered.

Open Agility Class: Open to dogs that have acquired the Novice Agility or Open Agility titles but which have not acquired a qualifying score towards an Agility Excellent title.

Open Jumpers With Weaves Class: Open to dogs that have acquired the Novice JWW or the Open JWW titles but have not acquired a qualifying score towards an Excellent JWW title.

Agility Excellent "A" Class: Open to dogs that have acquired the Open Agility title, and to dogs that have acquired the Agility Excellent title but that have not acquired a qualifying score towards their Master Agility Excellent title.

Excellent Jumpers With Weaves "A" Class: Open to dogs that have acquired the Open JWW title and to dogs that have acquired the Excellent JWW title but have not acquired a qualifying score towards their Master Excellent JWW title.

Master Agility Excellent "B" Class: Open only to dogs that have acquired the Agility Excellent title, and to dogs that have acquired the Master Agility Excellent title.

Master Excellent Jumpers With Weaves "B" Class: Open only to dogs that have acquired the Excellent JWW title and to dogs that have acquired the Master Excellent JWW title.

Height Divisions, Wickets, Measurement

Dogs may only be entered in one jump height division per day for all classes. The following jump height divsions shall be used in all trials:

16 inches: For dogs 18 inches and under at the withers

20 inches: For dogs 22 inches and under at the withers

24 inches: For dogs over 22 inches at the withers.

Owners are responsible for entering the proper height divisions. Handlers may opt to enter in a higher height division for all titling classes, but not in a division lower than their proper height division*(see exception under Preferred Classes). If the dogs height at the withers exceeds the maximum allowed for the jump height which the dog has entered, the dog shall be moved up into the proper jump height if the dog was measured prior to their run. In no case may a dog be moved down in height based on a judge's measurement at a trial. Dogs that run in a height division lower than their proper division will be eliminated. Judges reserve the right to measure any dog they believe might belong in a different division, and any dog whose entry in a given division might be questioned. Exception: Owners/Handlers that have in their possession (on the show grounds) a permanent or valid temporary Jump Height Card for the dog in question, issued by the AKC Agility Dept., are exempt from being measured and the judge shall accept the measurement that is listed on the Jump Height Card. Starting January 1, 2001, all dogs that do not have a permanent or valid temporary Jump Height Card issued by the AKC shall be measured by a judge of record prior to competing.

Determining Preferred Class Jump Heights

All dogs entered in the Preferred Class must enter the proper jump height for which they are eligible. Dogs may not be moved down in jump height at a trial, and in the Preferred Class, a dog may not jump at a height higher than it is eligible to enter according to:

The following jump height divisions shall be used in all Preferred Classes.

12 Inches: For dogs 18 inches and under at the withers.

16 Inches: For dogs 22 inches and under at the withers.

20 Inches: For dogs over 22 inches at the withers.

If a dog does not yet have an official AKC Jump Height Card and It is questionable as to which is the proper jump height to enter, the dog should be entered into the lower of the two heights to assure eligibility for running.

For example, if a dog is close to 22" at the withers, and the owner is not sure if the dog will measure as being eligible for the Preferred 16" class or Preferred 20" class, the owner should enter the lower height (Preferred 16" class) to assure being able to run at the trial.

If a dog is entered in the Preferred 16" class and is then measured to be over 22" at the withers, the dog can be moved up to the 20" class. However, if the dog is entered in the 20" class and is then measured 22" or less, the dog cannot be moved down to the 16" class at any trial for which the entries have closed.

Jump Height Card

All dogs competing in AKC Agility must present a valid official AKC Jump Height Card prior to running in any class. AWC will accept photocopies of the permanent or temporary Jump Height Card with the entries for the show, however Exhibitors should carry the original, valid official Jump Height Card at the trial to present upon request. Dogs that do not have a Jump Height Card will be measured by the Trial Judge before running. In accordance with Chapter 2, Section 3 of the Regulations for Agility Trials, dogs wicketed by the judge of record may not be moved down in jump height.

Course Familiarization and Warm-ups.

Handlers in all classes are permitted to walk the course, without a dog, prior to the start of the class. The walk-through allows the handler to plan their strategy for running the course. A walk-through period will be held prior to each class, following the judge's briefing. The judge's briefing will outline the course and answer handler questions.

Novice A and B dogs and handlers, only, will be given a familiarization period prior to the start of judging during which they will be limited to one attempt on each of the contact obstacles. Dogs may work on or off lead and will perform contact obstacles one at a time.

A warm-up area, consisting of a regulation agility jump, shall be provided for all exhibitors.

Prizes and Awards

In order to receive prizes, dogs must receive a qualifying score. Rosettes will be awarded:

First Prize - Blue Rosette
