THE SELECT AWARD
Often at a National Specialty the number of quality dogs in competition far exceeds the number of top awards available. The judge must choose only one Best of Breed and one Best of Opposite Sex.
The awarding of a Select Rosette acknowledges that the animal was under consideration for Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex. The judge is indicating her recognition of an exceptional animal who could, on another day, merit a top award.
The American Whippet Club allows for ten Select Awards to be presented in addition to Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex. The judge may, at her discretion, award all or none of the rosettes. Receiving a Select Award is indeed a significant honor. SELECT AWARDS: 10 inch Porcelain Commemorative Plate
ROSETTE—Silver and Aqua

Great Lakes Whippet Club

Biography: Isabell Stoffers
There have always been animals in my life. My family had Cockers and Springers. As a child I had my own dog, a Pomeranian. My first show dog, a Doberman, was a gift from my father in 1946. This was followed by my first show horse, an Arabian Stallion.
Marriage and six children later I was still hooked on showing. In 1964 my first Whippet came into my household and that was the start of "Home of the Runners". Along the way my daughter, Christy, and I also bred and showed Italian Greyhounds, including one that went Best In Show.
I guess the rest is really history. My first litter of Whippets produced my first champion. This was shortly followed by my purchase of a "Flying W", brindle bitch. She produced in her first litter my record holding BIS Ch. Runner's Our Own Charisma ROM, who still holds the record for winning the largest show, in the USA, for the breed; total entry of 4,036 Dogs. She produced my first very well known multi-BIS Ch. Runner's He's The Continental ROMX.
Judging started in 1970 and to date 1 do the Hound, Toy and Non-Sporting Groups plus Dobermans, Junior Showmanship and Best In Show. I had the honor of judging the second AWC National. I have also judged in ten foreign countries including intemational title shows and specialties.
Thru the years it's been a thrill to show, race, lure course and do obedience - and "Runners" dogs hold titles in all. Plus it gave me the opportunity of meeting Whippet friends all over the world.
This National, as your judge, is certainly the culmination of a "dream come true" for me. I thank you all for your support in making this possible - doing the breed I so dearly love.
Biography: Carole-Joy Evert
Carole-Joy obtained her first Pembroke in 1963. Interest in the breed was the result of Walt Disney's "Little Dog Lost" TV show. Larklain Katy-Did was the first Pembroke bitch to earn the CH. UDT titles. Katy is behind the Katydid bloodlines to this day, though usually off most pedigree forms.
CJ began judging in 1971 and is approved for all obedience and tracking classes. She has given seminars across the US and in Canada. She has held office positions in the Colorado Kennel Club, Terry-All Kennel Club, Mountain States Dog Training Club and the OWCC Of the Rockies. She is a member of GGPWCF, Cascade PWCC, PWCCA and the Centennial Schutzhund Club.
Carole-Joy is the owner of " Blue Springs 'n Katydid Dog Training Center", established in 1975. Classes meet 6 days and evenings a week, year round in an air-conditioned facility. Tracking classes meet twice a week, year round in all weather conditions at a local state park.
To date, Katydid has personally earned 25 Ch's, 17 CD's, 9 CDX's, 5 UD's, 15TD's, 10 TDX's and 2 VST/CT's. CT Katydid's I'm a Butterkup, CD, CGC was the first PWC bitch to become a CT. Butter is the great, great, great granddaughter of Katy, mentioned above. Butter is also the granddaughter of Am/Can Ch. Katydid Top Von Bart Starr, UDTX. Bart was the first Ch/UDTX in the breed.
Hobbies include landscape design, houseplants, reading, photography and most of all, playing pith puppies.
look forward to judging obedience at the 2002 American Whippet Club National Show. CJ is pictured with CT Ch. Katydid's I'm a Butterkup, CD, CGC and Ch. Katydid Sunny K Phar Lap, CDX, TDX, CGC
Barbara Henderson

My interest in purebred dogs began while I was in high school, working with and showing Afghans and English Setters. After building a home on Whippoorwill Hill, I purchased my first whippet, "Jessica of Whippoorwill." Thus began Whippoorwill Whippets, now known as one of the leading whippet kennels in the United States.
A review of this kennel's pedigrees will verify its influence on whippets not only in the United States, but throughout the world. We are proud of Whippoorwill's worldwide reputation for breeding consistent quality whippets.
On a personal note, I am a practicing Veterinarian specializing in felines and sighthounds. My son, Todd, has chosen wings over whippets and is a pilot for one of the commercial airlines. I am now the proud grandmother of Tanner, an active two-year old boy
I have been an active member of several dog clubs for a number of years, including the National Whippet Club of Canada, Atlantic Whippet Association, Potomac Hound Club, and the American Whippet Club, on which I served as a board member for eleven years, holding the positions of Vice President and President.
My goal in breeding is to produce a quality whippet, sound in structure and temperament that adheres to the Whippet standard. With this in mind, in a very limited breeding program Whippoorwill has produced over one hundred champions, either bred or co-bred. Among these are Obedience title holders, LCM's, Specialty winners, and five Best in Show winners—three from the same litter.
Whippoorwill has successfully combined blood lines in its breeding process through the selective importation of dogs from other nations. I believe that I have been quite successful in importing dogs and integrating these in a "line-breeding" program.
I am honored to have been asked to be the substitute judge for the Veteran Sweepstakes. I wish Jean Balint a speedy recovery and will shed the tears that I know she would have shed had she been able to judge this class.
Biography: Torn Quinn
I have been involved in dogs all my life. Having a Collie in the house was a regular occurrence. I have been a member of the local Collie club and the national club for over 25 years. While showing in conformation, obedience and coursing in the United States and Canada , I have finished Ch's, CD's and JC's titles on a Collie, Basset Hounds, Whippets and Schipperkes.
I have bred Whippets and Basset Hounds under the "Ring Side" prefix since 1979 and currently also own a Schipperke.
One of my personal achievements is handling a Basset Hound to a specialty Best In Show at the Canadian Nationals.
I currently am specialing a Whippet and showing home bred Basset Hounds in the United States and in Canada.
I wish to express my gratitude to the American Whippet Club for allowing me the privilege of judging the Altered Classes at the National Specialty.
Biography: Shelley Hennessy
I have had Afghan Hounds since 1971, Whippets and Collies since 1983, and Chinese Cresteds since 1992. I have numerous titles on my dogs in conformation, obedience, agility and lure coursing.
I am an AKC judge, judging most of the Hound Group, several Herding breeds, and Cresteds. I also judge AKC and ASFA Field Trials, and hope to apply for my Obedience license at a future date.
In my non-doggy life, I have 25 years with the Toledo Police Department, and currently work as a Street Sergeant. I am also a licensed Social Worker in the state of Ohio.
I am very happy to be judging the Triathlon Conformation Class, since my CORY, Ch. Chaparral Corazon, CDX, LCM, SC, TT, OA, OM, won the very first AWC Triathlon, with her daughter, Ch. Chaparral Chamorro, F.CH. Placing 9 th the same year.
