ALLEN ODOM

In the early 70's my partner, Phil Hedges and I started Phil-Allen Whippets. Phil wanted a low mainte nance (grooming) and healthy breed. At the time we were showing Shelties.

Phil contacted Ken Dunningan (Flying W) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Ken and his wife were divorc ing at the time and Ken had several Whippets he wanted to find homes for. We drove to New Mexico and pur chased our first Whippet a bitch called Aileen of Domaj (Ch. Tonto of Flying W x Ch. Silva Slipper of Flying W). Aileen was line bred on Ch. Homestead Cinderella, a Ch. Courtenay Fleetfoot of Pennyworth daugher.

We bred Aileen to Ch. Appraxin Sir Bruce (Ch. Appraxin Mind Duster x Morshor's Cicada) owned and shown by Joan Frailey. Sir Bruce had outstanding movement, something that Aileen was lacking. This breeding gave us our first home bred champion, Phil-Allen Rhapsody in Blue.

Over the years we bred to Appraxin, Coronation, Terrace Hill and Khiva dogs. They all added much to our successful breeding program. In twelve litters we bred five generations of champions with a total of seventeen champions and several group placing and group winning dogs like our Ch. Phil-Allen Sir Prize, the no. 7 Whippet in 1987. Breeder, owner, handled.

We are happy to say that over the years we introduced many nice people to the Whippet breed, which include Cindy Scott (Brookwood) and Karen Flint (Skeedoodle) that have been successful in their own right.

In 1990 I was approved to judge Whippets and in 1994 I was priv ileged to judge the AWC Midwest specialty. I must say judging the Midwest with the depth of quality shown to me was the pinnacle of my judging career. It doesn't get much better.

In 1995 I was offered the position of Executive Field

Representative with the American Kennel Club and all my breeding, showing and judging ceased.

What an honor to be asked to return to the breed I devoted so much time and energy to and be granted the privilege of judging the marvelous Golden Oldies. Many, Many Thanks...

BETTY STITES

My first dog was an Afghan Hound, purchased in 1955. Through that dog we became involved in Whippet racing in 1956, and shortly thereafter in open field coursing with Wendy Howell's Great Circle Whippets and with other Whippet fanciers in the Northern California area. This led to handling friends' Whippets in the ring, traveling with Whippets, being a gofer for Whippets, and providing long term temporary housing for

Whippets. Since 1972 Whippets have been permanent resi dents at Hullabaloo. The present household consists of two ladies, a nine year old champion and a youngster just start ing out who seems to want to be a Lure Courser.

The AKC has approved me to judge all Hounds, all Sporting breeds, Shelties and Shar Pei. I have judged Whippets since 1978 and was very pleased to be asked to judge the dog classes at the first America Whippet Club National Specialty. Additionally, I have judged several other AWC National Regional Specialties, as well as having had Whippet assignments in several other countries. In CanadaI had the great pleasure of judging the National Whippet Club of Canada Specialty, as well as the Central Canada Whippet Club Specialty in Winnipeg, and the Western Gazehound Club Specialty in British Columbia.

It was a great honor to have been asked to judge the first AWC National Specialty with Doris Wear. It is an equal honor to be asked to judge the National again. My thanks to the Club and to each of you who have allowed me to go over your dogs.

PEGGY BUSH

Peggy doesn't really need an introduction. If you've met her or talked to her she has definitely left an impression on you. She is current ly serving as the National Rescue Coordinator and lives in Dallas, Texas (as if you couldn't tell after you talk to her) with a variety of Whippets, a Pomeranian or two, a Brussels Griffon, a Poodle, a Golden Retriever, and other critters. She has devoted her life to caring for animals and especially Whippets as is appar ent in the following biography about this very special lady. It seems only natural for her to judge the Altered classes at this years National.

This was originally printed in the Faith City Kennel Club Catalog when the show was dedicated in honor of Peggy.

Peggy was born at the Creek Council House of the Indian Nation in Okmulgee,

Oklahoma , and has been on the warpath ever since. She won't tell you what year that was, but claims Oklahoma was a state and not Indian Territory.

Beautiful, tall, and graceful as a youth, Peggy first pursued a career in modeling and dance while in high school and college. She was an outstanding local model, hired for both runway and print by such famous houses as Neiman-Marcus and LaMode.

While attending Texas Women's University in Denton, Peggy dreamed of expand ing her modeling and hoped for a career as a professional dancer. Her dreams were shattered by a foot injury. Peggy left school and became a medical technician at Baylor in Dallas.

Peggy always loved animals, especially dogs and acquired her first purebred in 1958. Over the years she has bred and exhibited Pomeranians, Cairn Terriers, Brussels Griffons, and Whippets. One of her homebred champion Griffons was shown to a spot in the Top Ten by C.L. Eudy for several years.

In February, 1994, Peggy suffered a series of small strokes. During her convales cence she decided it was time to stop her active breeding program and to give some thing back to the sport which had provided her with so much pleasure over the years. Turning to breed rescue was a natural transition. In August, 1996, the American Whippet Club recognized her efforts by appointing her their National Chairperson. Peggy currently manages a network of some 70 people, covering all of the 48 states and parts of Canada. She personally has taken in and placed over 130 Whippets, of which all 130 have lived at her home while awaiting adoption.

Peggy is currently mastering the Internet and continues to take in and care for her beloved breed including Charlie, a 17 year old she recently rescued from the shelter near her home.

Thank you and God bless you Peggy for your devoted love and care of our breed.

Kay Nierengarten Northwind

My relationship with Whippets began in 1980 when my husband, Mark Shubert and I moved from an apartment and bought our first house. We couldn't wait to get a dog. We searched for a while, looking for a compromise between the tiny mixed breed dogs my family had when I was a child and the big, boisterous labs he had been raised with.

We heard about Whippets and went to a dog show. Outside the ring, we asked questions

until an exhibitor thrust the lead to an exquisite little bitch into my hand and told me the dog's name. The owner-handler was busy in the ring for a half an hour and in that time we got lost in those huge, dark eyes and gentle demeanor.

We've never had any other breed.

Under the Northwind prefix, Mark and I have bred six litters in the past 19 years with many youngsters reaching show, field and obedience titles in either or both the US & Canada. We believe whole heartedly in the dual purpose Whippet and select each breeding prospect with both con formational soundness and field abilities in mind. Those qualities, couples with a stable, sweet temperament are what we strive to produce. For that reason, I am delighted to judge the triathlon. As a competitor myself in two of the four years it has been offered, I have an immense respect for the time and commitment the participants have in preparing for this single event.

Thank you for this opportunity and the best of luck to the triathletes and handlers that have worked so hard!

Mary Dukes

I purchased my first whip pet in 1975 and bred my first litter under the "Delacreme" prefix in 1978. Since then I have bred close to 30 champi ons including a number of multiple All-Breed and AWC Specialty Best In Show win ners. Individuals I am particu larly proud of include BIS/SBIS Ch. Delacreme Avante Garde ROMX,

BIS/National SBIS Ch. Bohem Delacreme Demoiselle, BIS/SBISCh. Delacreme Red Cloud Avalon and last but certainly not least SBIS Ch. Delacreme de la Renta ROMX.

At present I breed less frequently than in the past as I have a busy and successful career as a professional dog handler, showing breeds in all 7 groups but still special izing in the sighthound breeds.

I reside in Murrieta, California with my 12 year old daughter, Noelle and besides the dogs, also keep exotic goldfish and a registered Paint gelding (who we also refer to as "the money pit").

I am very honored to have been selected to judge the 1999 Futurity and look forward to seeing your beautiful puppies.

Sally E. Burgess

9014 Madge Avenue
St Louis , Missouri 63144
314-962-6992

Sally Burgess is licensed by the American Kennel Club to judge all obedience events. Her interests are varied and she admires all breeds of dogs. Mrs Burgess has held numer ous seminars on Judging, Obedience, and Stewarding. Not only has she been in the dog ring for over 25 years, but her dogs con tinue to accumulate multiple awards and titles.

For the past 16 years, she has owned and multi-titled Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties) in Breed,

Obedience, Agility and Herding. In fact, The American Shetland Sheepdog Association honored and recognized Mrs Burgess for her Sheltie, Ch Prelude's Trivial Pursuit, UD, HC, (Championship, Utility Degree, and Herding Certified) as the 74th Sheltie in the entire history of the Association to have accomplished these titles.

At present, Sally is Comptroller for The Culinart Group, Inc., but continues to train and compete in the ring, as well as instructs all levels of obedience. Her desire is to aid obedience handlers to better enjoy and understand their dogs and to pro mote good sportsmanship. Within the dog realm, Sally's involve ment has been extensive. Besides chairing many of the Obedience/Show Committees, she has also served in local clubs as Treasurer, President, and Board member.

Residents of Brentwood, Missouri, she and her son, John, are active in local breed and obedience clubs, where he is following in the family tradition of winning competitions in Breed and Agility.

William Oxandale

I became interested in purebred dogs in 1973 when I acquired a Miniature Schnauzer. I began exhibiting in the breed ring, and although moderately successful, I soon became more interested in obedience where I gained a great deal of satisfaction in training and exhibiting, and where I earned the first Obedience Trial Championship (OTCh) ever awarded to my breed. A modest breeding program pro duced another Obedience Trial Champion, two breed Champions and a number of other excellent obedience dogs. I currently hold some 26 obedience titles on dogs I have owned, trained and exhibited. I now exhibit occasion ally in both rings, but mainly in obedience. Licensed to judge at AKC obedience events since 1980. I have officiated at more than 510 obedience trials and shows. In 1992, I was granted full judging status in the breed ring for Miniature Schnauzers and Junior Showmanship. I am now also licensed for Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers. In 1995, I wrote and published a new book entitled, "Obedience Judging: A Beginner's Manual". This is the first and only book on this subject currently in publication.

At present, I am a retired Operations Research Analyst and live with my wife of 45 years in Crestwood, Missouri. I am Trial Chairman for the North St Louis County Obedience Training Club, and have served in that capacity for 18 years. My current hobbies include judging, training and exhibiting in obedience, tax consulting for dog clubs, and doing an occa sional desktop publishing job on my computer.

I look forward to judging the obedience classes at your show and wish every entrant a very pleasant and rewarding experience in my ring. Good Luck to everyone.

Sincerely,

William A. Oxandale

Mike Bond

When I'm not doing agility, I maintain a full-time general dental practice in Naperville, Illinois. I'm active in all types of sports. I live with my wife, Cherie, and two sons, Brendan (8) and Kevin (5). We are owned and trained by a Bernese Mountain Dog, three Golden Retrievers and a Border Collie. I am involved in tracking and obedience. I have competed through Utility in the U.S. and Canada and had the first UDTX Bernese Mountain Dog. My main love is agility. I got hooked after seeing the tape of the Crufts performance.

I am the co-founder of Agility Ability, Agility Ability Club of Illinois (our AKC Club), and Creekwood Meadows Agility. I was fortunate enough to have served on all five AKC Agility Advisory Committees. I am an AKC and a UKC agility judge. I had

judged the AKC Agility Nationals this past year. I have done workshops, seminars and demos throughout the Midwest and for several breed specialties. We have been running agility training classes in the Plano area for the past nine years.

I am actively competing in AKC and UKC agility. Our Golden, Hickory, completed his AKC Masters Agility title and AXJ. Our Annie was the first Bernese Mountain Dog with an AKC agility title. Our Berner, Bailey, has an AX. Our Border Collie, Magoo, is going for his MX and AXJ. I enjoy and train all styles of agility and see merits for all.

I write monthly agility columns for Front & Finish, the Golden Retriever Club of Illinois publication, and the Bernese Mountain Dog publications. I have contributed to agility train ing articles for the AKC Gazette and have contributed to an agility training book, All About Agility.

THE SELECT AWARD

Often at a National Specialty the number of quality dogs in competition far exceeds the number of top awards available. The judge must choose only one Best of Breed and one Best of Opposite Sex

The awarding of a Select Rosette acknowledges that the animal was under consideration for Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex. The judge is indicating her recognition of an exceptional animal who could, on another day, merit a top award.

The American Whippet Club, Inc. allows for ten Select Awards to be presented in addition to Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex. The judge may, at her discretion, award all or none of the rosettes. Receiving a Select Award is indeed a significant honor.

SELECT AWARDS: 10 inch Porcelain Commemorative Plate ROSETTE-Silver and Blue
