Ann Chamberlain,
I first started lure coursing with
In 1992 after ASFA admitted the Ridgebacks, I returned to coursing. I was running the grandchildren of the dogs I started with! One day, I was complaining about the judging and was told; then go learn how to do it yourself! So I did. I was lucky enough to have Daphne
Dogs have been a big part of my life since I was twelve. I have owned and bred Ridgebacks since 1965, and share the house with my husband, a Greyhound, a Sloughi, and four Rhodesian Ridgebacks. There is nothing I enjoy more than being out on a field with dogs, friends old and new, and watching dogs run (unless it is up in the forest hunting for mushrooms with the dogs).
During my time in

Scott Hurlbert,
Whippet folks were surprised we only had one whippet. Thanks to Elaine McMichaels, I soon remedied that. I promptly received my second whippet, Dakota. With Dakota, I learned some dogs run, some dogs think and some strategize. Dakota strategized. He was a good all around whippet. He looked good in the show ring and made coursing look easy. As I traveled with these two whippets and started helping out with local trials, I decide we could use a few more judges in the area. I started down the judging path in 1996. I have traveled quite a bit to help out clubs and met some great people. I have 5 more whippets and am now the ASFA Regional Director for Region 5.
I still play ball and go on walks with my dogs. I think they like it almost as much as they like coursing, well almost.

WHIPPET MYOSTATIN PROJECT
9 May 2007
In late June of 2006, a small group of whippet owners and breeders contacted the National Institutes of Health's Ostrander Lab (the Dog Genome Project) regarding the increasing frequency of apparently double-muscled whippets in various whippet lines. That letter triggered a study to determine whether or not the double-muscling we were seeing was the result of a
myostatin mutation.
Double-muscling occurs in other mammals, including cattle, sheep, mice, and humans, and is caused by mutations in the gene governing myostatin production. On May 1, the Ostrander Lab’s study was published in the Public Library of Science’s Genetics journal and confirmed that a myostatin mutation does exist in whippets and is the cause of the double-muscled pups.
Myostatin is a growth factor responsible for controlling the development of muscle fibers. When the myostatin-producing gene is unable to function properly, excess muscling develops. Inheriting two copies of the mutation (one from each parent) results in a whippet with almost twice the amount of normal muscling. Although whippets with one copy of the mutation may, on average, be more muscular than whippets not carrying the mutation, there is no real way to tell whether a whippet carries the gene just by its appearance.
Over the course of the study, we learned that double-muscled whippets exist in several unrelated lines in North America and Europe and, although this problem is now small, it appears to be growing. Because of the geographically wide-spread occurrence of double-muscled whippets, an
international group of concerned whippet owners and breeders has been formed to work together towards a common goal: the development of a test which will allow whippet fanciers to identify carriers of the mutation.
We will also be developing a database so that whippet owners worldwide can share information about their dogs and how the mutation affects them.
We are grateful to those whippet owners and breeders who participated in the initial study. With the continued support of the whippet community, we have been able to achieve our goal of test development for this problem.

From Lisa Costello
This was a very challenging trial as far as weather conditions and the surface of the field. We started with snow on the field, followed by rain, wind and sun in any combination but no warmth! The course design was quite challenging with one very long straight, a few good hard turns and an agility section which was very hard for some of the dogs to navigate. I huntmastered all of Open and it was interesting to see the dogs run....hard for many but the dogs who emerged the victors earned it.
Anaxo was incredible to watch in the breed run and this was her very first lure trial!
