NOTE: Check Class Judging Sequence

Judges are not required to wait for dogs. They will adhere as closely as possible to the judging schedule printed here.

Important - Transfer of dogs from regular classes to Best of BreedNariety Competition (Ch.11, Section 6, AKC Rules) MUST be made to the Show Superintendent at least one half hour prior to the start of any regular conformation judging at this show.

No dogs will be allowed on the show grounds except those entered in the show. Dogs may arrive at any time prior to judging. Dogs not required for further judging will be excused.

Please keep the grounds clean. You are responsible for picking up after your own dogs. All dogs must re main on lead at all times.

Parents must be responsible for children. Children must be kept under supervision at all times.

CAUTION: Do not leave dogs in closed vehicles. A closed vehicle can rapidly overheat with tragic consequences. In the event a vehicle must be entered to rescue a dog from overheating or suffocation due to improper ventilation, all persons hereby waive any claim for damages against the Club, or its members or agents.

GROOMING/STAGING AREA

There will be a separate room for crating and grooming dogs that are being exhibited on the day. No Exercise Pens. All dogs must be removed from the crating room immediately after the conclusion of judging each day.

The Select Award

Often at a National Specialty the number of quality dogs in competition far exceeds the number of top awards available. The judge must choose only one Best of Breed and one Best of Opposite Sex. The awarding of a Select Rosette acknowledges that the animal was under consideration for Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex. The judge is indicating their recognition of an exceptional animal who could, on another day, merit a top award. The American Whippet Club allows for ten Select Awards to be presented in addition to Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex. The judge may, at their discretion, award all or none of the rosettes. Receiving a Select Award is indeed a significant honor.

Select Awards: 9" Pottery Commemorative plate.

A 2nd generation dog person, Anne Clark showed dogs that she and her mother, Olga Hone Rogers, bred under the Surry banner. These were primarily English Cocker Spaniels and the 3 varieties of Poodle. Becoming a professional handler in the late 1940's, Anne Hone Rogers became the 1st woman professional handler and only the 2nd of her sex to win Best In Show at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. In 1964, Anne married the late James Edward Clark and together they bred some of the more notable standard and miniature poodles of this era as well as some of the top ranked Norfolk Terriers. This under the kennel name of Rimskittle as well as continuing the Surry prefix. In 1986 Anne became an All Breed Judge. The highpoint in her judging g career was to judge Best In Show at Westminster in 1978.

Fido winner of Judge of the Year, Dog Woman of the Year on 3 separate occasion, she also was the proud recipient of the 1st Mark Morris Award in 1995, as well as being inducted into the Quaker Oats Hall of Fame. In 1998 she received her 5th Fido, this for Dog Writer of the Year. A book published by Macmillan and Howell (The International Encyclopedia of Dogs) was co-written and co-edited with Andrew Brace.

Past President of the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America, A 20 year member of the Board of Directors of the Poodle Club of America and now Past President of that club, breed and judging seminars and symposiums are also interests. A monthly column in the magazine "Pure Bred Dogs In Review", membership in the Dog Writers Association of America, plus judging dogs shows somewhere in the world most every weekend, round out a very busy schedule.

Often quoted, the Clark's have always said" Everything good in our life has come from the Sport of Dogs, including our lives together".

My introduction to the dog world wa s right after my wife, Beverly, and I were first married. At that time we had a pet Samoyed. While reading the Sunday paper, Bev saw an ad for a Gordon Setter litter. She had grown up with a Gordon next door to her and wanted to go look at the puppies. We called and went over to look at the litter. On the way over, I kept saying that we did not need another dog and we were just going to look and then leave! Well, you know the rest of the story; one of the big boys crawled into my lap and licked my face. That puppy went home with us and I made Beverly drive!! He grew up to be 30 inches tall and 100+ pounds, but he did get a reserve winners dog ribbon! This was in 1974.

Our first serious show dogs were English Setters. We had a few English before we found another Gordon that we liked. In the late 70's, we also acquired our first English Cocker. Once the English Cockers came into our lives, the English Setters slowly left. We had our first Gordon litter in 1978. This was shortly after we had relocated to Tucson, Arizona from Denver, Colorado. The Arizona Irish Setter people are responsible for us
becoming interested in the Irish.

After moving to Phoenix in 1983, we ac quired our first Irish. In the past we have also had an Afghan, a Briard, a black Standard Poodle and a smooth coat Fox Terrier, but our focus has been the Gordons and the English Cockers. We acquired our first Irish Red and White Setter four years ago, and have since added two smooth coated Fox Terriers. I served 6 years on the National Board of the Gordon Setter Club of America and am past president of Scottsdale Dog Fanciers All Breed Club. I received my Judging license in 1993, initially approved

Mrs. Marilyn Little became aware of the Sport of Dogs in 1970 with her purchase of Charlie, an oversized, over enthusiastic yellow Labrador retriever. Tremendous success was achieved in training and exhibition in obedience and that led to her being approved to judge all levels of obedience in 1984. The Sport of Dogs takes Mrs. Little on the road 25 or so weekends a year, either judging or exhibiting, all over the country and provides her the opportunity to meet interesting people, judge super dogs and share those unique dog experiences with other fanciers. Currently President of the Papago Labrador Retriever Club of Greater Phoenix she also hold memberships in Sahuaro State Kennel Club, Phoenix Field and Obedience Club, Southern California Labrador Retriever Club and the Labrador Retriever Club, Inc. You will still find Mrs. Little competing with her Labradors under the OKAK prefix.

The history of Raybar begins with the 1961 purchase of our first purebred dog, an Irish Setter. He finish his championship quite easily (very novice owner handled) in Southern California. Next came an English Setter bitch of far better quality and our first English Setter litter. During the years between 1962 and the late 70's, we bred or owned more than 30 English Setter champions. We also had a few more Irish Setters and a Gordon Setter, Ch. Rockaplenty's Hang 'Em High who was ranked #2 (owner- handles) during the time we owned him and in later years, while under other ownership, became the #1 sire All Breeds.

Whippets came into our lives in 1965 and have been our main interest since 1969 when we finished our first champion. Since then, we have bred and/or owned over 40 AKC champions, bred 22 ASFA coursing champions and 6 obedience title holders. We have an average of only 2 litters about every 3 years and seldom co-own our breeding stock. Our main emphasis is on, what we consider, correct whippet type and movement.

I have always enjoyed showing in the Veteran Class and look forward to Veteran Sweepstakes at the 2005 AWC National Specialty.

I am very honored to be selected to judge the Triathlon conformation competition. Thank you to all who entered their dogs.

I have been involved with showing since 1973. My first breeds were Afghan Hounds and Labrador Retrievers. From the early 70's until late 80's, I also was involved with owning and showing Paint horses.

Over the last 30 years, I have trained, taught and competed in conformation and obedience. I have judged AWC supported sweepstakes, CWA conformation and All-Breed matches. I was drawn to whippets because they are one of the most beautiful athletes in the dog world. My first whippet came to Hycks Hollow in 1990 from Halstan Whippets. Am/Can Ch. Halstan's Class Act. Classie became our foundation and still resides at Hycks Hollow. We enjoy success with breeding and owner-handling whippets carrying the Hycks Hollow name.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to be part of the 2005 AWC National Specialty.

My first experience in the ring was in 1965 at an all breed match in Southern California. I handled the first Whippet ever to grace the sofa at Raybar Kennels. Tiffany and I won a 3rd place in a large Junior Showmanship class. I was 6 years old and hooked for life. I began handling professionally in 1979 and have finished many fine Sporting dogs, Terriers and Sighthounds. I've actively participated in lure coursing since 1978.

In 1992 I thought I'd give obedience a try. Finn (Raybar's The Flying Finn, CD) and I competed in 5 trials ending his career ranked #4 obedience Whippet (S.R. system). I appreciate the opportunity to judge at the 2005

National Specialty. I'm really looking forward to it.

Hey - who is that guy in the picture? Believe it or not, it is David Samuelson, this year's Futurity Judge!

This picture represents one of my favorite futurity memories. It is from the very 1st AWC futurity in Ravenna, OH in 1984. The judge is Dr. James Gray, I am in the middle (I was a little younger and had a little more hair back then) and my long time mentor, Carol Juelfs (Affinity) at my side. What a thrilling day! The whippet, Ch. Affinity Winterwhip Hi I'm Spencer, won his class that day and now is 7 generations behind many of the Dashing Whippets. It is hard to believe the futurity was started 21 years ago. The futurity has always been an exciting event, a showcase for Whippet breeders and a place to present your promising puppies to the fancy. For me, the futurity has never been about ribbons but more importantly it is about shaping the future of the breed.

My family has been involved in the whippet breed since I was 16 years old. I have had the great privilege of many wonderful mentors over the years. With their guidance, I have come to appreciate the whippet as an athlete demonstrated in racing and coursing and as a competitive show dog. The whippet with its grace of symmetry, beautiful head piece and large dark eyes, is a breed of great detail. With this in mind, I have produced Hound group winners, Specialty Best in Show winners, Field Champions and Race Champions; have also had the good fortune to have several dogs titles in multiple venues.

I joined the AWC in 1987 and in 2001 I became the AWC North Central Region showchair. I currently serve as the Treasurer of the AWC. I am also the Vice President of the St. Croix Valley All-Breed Kennel Club.

I have shared with you one of my favorite futurity memories. I hope this year's Futurity and National Specialty will make a favorite memory for you! Enjoy your dogs and the wonderful friend you have in this sport.

I am honored to judge this year's Futurity.
