SCHEDULE OF POINTS FOR DIVISION 3 - EFFECTIVE MAY 13, 2003
Division 3 includes North Carolina
The Points towards a Championship shall be awarded to the Winners Dog and Bitch of each breed or variety based on the actual number of dogs or bitches competing in that breed or variety.
If the dog designated Winners Dog or Winners Bitch is also awarded Best of Breed or Variety, the dogs of both sexes that have been entered for Best of Breed or Variety competition and that have been defeated in such competition, shall be counted in addition to the dogs that competed in the regular classes for its sex in calculating championship points.
If the dog designated Winners Dog or Winners Bitch is also awarded Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed or Variety, the dogs of its own sex that have been entered for Best of Breed or Variety Competition that have been defeated in competition for Best of Opposite Sex, Shall be counted in addition to the dogs that competed in the regular classes for its sex in calculating championship points.
After points have been computed for Winners Dog and Winners Bitch subject to the above stipulations, the dog awarded the Best of Winners shall be credited with the number of points calculated for Winners Dog or Winners Bitch, whichever is greater.
In counting the number of eligible dogs in competition, a dog that is disqualified, or that is dismissed, excused or ordered from the ring by the judge, or from which all awards are withheld shall not be included. Any dog which shall have won fifteen points shall become a Champion of record, if six or more of said points shall have been won at two shows with a rating of three or more championship points each and under two different judges, and some one or more of the balance of said points shall have been won under some other judge or judges than the two judges referred to above.

PLEASE KEEP THE GROUNDS CLEAN. You are responsible for picking up after your own dogs. All dogs must remain on lead at all times.
No dogs will be allowed on the show grounds except those entered in the show. Dogs may arrive at any time prior to judging. Dogs not required for further judging will be excused.
Parents must be responsible for children. Children must be kept under supervision at all times.

The following Challenge Trophies are offered at the AWC National Specialty only and shall remain in the custody of the Club until permanently retired. For permanent possession, all Challenge Trophies must be won three times by the same owner or owners, not necessarily with the same dog.
Best Of Breed: The Sporting Field Challenge Trophy, offered by Mrs. James E. Butt, in honor of Ch. Sporting Field's Clansman. The Bohem Challenge Trophy, 19th century bronze "Whippet With A Ball" by P.J. Mene, mounted on a black walnut base with silver plaque. Donor will provide engraved plaque of winner' names. Often at a National Specialty the number of quality dogs in competition far exceeds the number of top awards available. The judge must choose only one Best of Breed and one Best of Opposite Sex.
The awarding of a Select Rosette acknowledges that the animal was under consideration for Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex. The judge is indicating her recognition of an exceptional animal who could, on another day, merit a top award.
The American Whippet Club allows for ten Select Awards to be presented in addition to Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex. The judge may, at her discretion, award all or none of the rosettes. Receiving a Select Award is indeed a significant honor.

OBEDIENCE CHALLENGE TROPHIES
Unless otherwise specified, the Challenge trophies are offered for the highest scoring Whippet from the regular Obedience classes. Challenge trophies are offered under the following conditions: To be won three times by the same exhibitor, not necessarily with the same dog, for outright ownership. Dogs may be owned by the handler or by any other person. Until won permanently, the trophy will remain in the hands of the American Whippet
Club. Jersey Rag Racers Association, Inc. offers a Perpetual Trophy that consists of a brass Whippet figurine on a wood base to the highest scoring Whippet in the regular or non-regular classes of the Obedience trial ALSO competing in Conformation regular or non-regular classes. This perpetual trophy is to remain in the possession of the Club. An engraved picture frame is offered by Jersey Rag Racers Association, Inc. for the winner of this perpetual trophy to keep. NOTE: Dog must compete in class, not just be entered.
Judy Byron Challenge Trophy for HIT—A Whippet statue holding a dumbbell on a wooden base designed by Dannyquest and offered in memory of Judy Byron by the subscribers of Whippet-Talk.
The Dodger Challenge Trophy — Brass with bronze overlay Whippet statue mounted on a base with a plaque. Offered by Joan Lessor in honor of 3 time AWC High In Trial Winner, "Dodger", Ch. U-CDX Deeps Woods Light Brigade, UD.

Judith Britton, "Seaspell Kennel", purchased her 1st whippet in 1979 from "Sporting Fields" Kennel and fell madly in love with the breed as her and "Wind" earned their CD title. Judy bred her 1st official whippet litter in 1985 after purchasing a show whippet from "Morshor Kennel".
During the early 1990's Judy was an avid lure courser and became a licensed coursing judge. Today Judy resides in Georgetown Delaware on a 46 acre farm with her adoring 11 whippets. She has achieved producing many versatile whippets earning Best in Fields as well as Best in Shows.
Official Breed Standard
WHIPPET
General Appearance
A medium size sighthound giving the appearance of elegance and fitness, denoting great speed, power and balance without coarseness. A true sporting hound that covers a maximum of distance with a minimum of lost motion. Should convey an impression of beautifully balanced muscular power and strength, combined with great elegance and grace of outline. Symmetry of outline, muscular development and powerful gait are the main considerations; the dog being built for speed and work, all forms of exaggeration should be avoided.
Size, Proportion, Substance
Ideal height for dogs, 19 to 22 inches; for bitches, 18 to 21 inches, measured at the highest point of the withers. More than one-half inch above or below the stated limits will disqualify. Length from forechest to buttocks equal to or slightly greater than height at the withers. Moderate bone throughout.
Head
Keen intelligent alert expression. Eyes large and dark. Both eyes must be of the same color. Yellow or light eyes should be strictly penalized. Blue or wall eyes shall disqualify. Fully pigmented eyelids are desirable.
Rose ears, small, fine in texture; in repose, thrown back and folded along neck. Fold should be maintained when at attention. Erect ears should be severely penalized.
Skull long and lean, fairly wide between the ears, scarcely perceptible stop.
Muzzle should be long and powerful, denoting great strength of bite, without coarseness. Lack of underjaw should be strictly penalized. Nose entirely black.
Teeth of upper jaw should fit closely over teeth of lower jaw creating a scissors bite. Teeth should be white and strong. Undershot shall disqualify. Overshot one-quarter inch or more shall disqualify.
Neck, Topline, Body
Neck long, clean and muscular, well arched with no suggestion of throatiness, widening gracefully into the top of the shoulder. A short thick neck, or a ewe neck, should be penalized. The back is broad, firm and well muscled, having length over the loin. The backline runs smoothly from the withers with a graceful natural arch, not too accentuated, beginning over the loin and carrying through over the croup; the arch is continuous without
flatness. A dip behind shoulder blades, wheelback, flat back, or a steep or flat croup should be penalized. Brisket very deep, reaching as nearly as possible to the point of the elbow. Ribs well sprung but with no suggestion of barrel shape. The space between the forelegs is filled in so that there is no appearance of a hollow between them. There is a definite tuckup of the underline. The tail long and tapering, reaching to the hipbone when
drawn through between the hind legs. When the dog is in motion, the tail is carried low with only a gentle upward curve; tail should not be carried higher than top of back.
Forequarters
Shoulder blade long, well laid back, with flat muscles, allowing for moderate space between shoulder blades at peak of withers. Upper arm of equal length, placed so that the elbow falls directly under the withers.
The points of the elbows should point neither in nor out, but straight back. A steep shoulder, short upper arm, a heavily muscled or loaded shoulder, or a very narrow shoulder, all of which restrict low free movement, should be strictly penalized. Forelegs straight, giving appearance of strength and substance of bone. Pasterns strong, slightly bent and flexible. Bowed legs, tied-in elbows, legs lacking substance, legs set far under the body so as to create an exaggerated forechest, weak or upright pasterns should be strictly penalized.
Both front and rear feet must be well formed with hard, thick pads. Feet more hare than cat, but both are ac ceptable. Flat, splayed or soft feet without thick hard pads should be strictly penalized. Toes should be long, close and well arched. Nails strong and naturally short or of moderate length. Dewclaws may be removed.
Hindquarters
Long and powerful. The thighs are broad and muscular, stifles well bent; muscles are long and flat and carry well down toward the hock. The hocks are well let down and close to the ground. Sickle or cow hocks should be strictly penalized.
Coat
Short, close, smooth and firm in texture. Any other coat shall be a disqualification. Old scars and injuries, the result of work or accident, should not be allowed to prejudice the dog's chance in the show ring.
Color
Color immaterial.
Gait
Low, free moving and smooth, with reach in the forequarters and strong drive in the hindquarters. The dog has great freedom of action when viewed from the side; the forelegs move forward close to the ground to give a long, low reach; the hind legs have strong propelling power. When moving and viewed from front or rear, legs should turn neither in nor out, nor should feet cross or interfere with each other.
Lack of front reach or rear drive, or a short, hackney gait with high wrist action, should be strictly penalized. Crossing in front or moving too close should be strictly penalized.
Temperament
Amiable, friendly, gentle, but capable of great intensity during sporting pursuits.
Disqualifications
More than one-half inch above or below stated height limits. Blue or wall eyes.
Undershot, overshot one-quarter inch or more.
Any coat other than short, close. smooth and firm in texture.

Where would I be today without this wonderful whippet breed? Because of them, I have made many long Listing friends and had some of the best times of my live.
I was given my first whippet in 1%9 from my longtime friend Peggy Newcombe. From this lovely Ricky daughter; "Willcare" was born. I had a limited number of :litters and I was happy with the degree of success that was produced.
I am very honored to he asked to judge this Veteran's Sweepstakes and be assured this "old gal" will enjoy every minute with these oldsters!!!!

Most of my life has been spent around dogs. My father had gun dogs and my mother raised Persian cats. My childhood was spent with an assortment of cats, dogs, birds and horses. After college I got married and raised my family. When the children left home I had a chance ro reacquaint myself with out interruption, to my dog hobby.
My interest in Whippets began interestingly enough with a sick Doberman, who needed grooming. The recommended groomer j ust happened to be a Whippet breeder Her name is Iva Kimmelman. She became my mentor Iva introduced me to dog shows and coursing. We eventually co-bred a very successful litter They included the #1 AKC lure courser and #22 in ASFA, and her sister was #10 AKE lure courser and #35 in ASFA in 1996.
Over the past 18 years I have had multiple LM's, all bench champions with performance ti ties, along with some very talented coursing dogs. Racing came later with Jet, who needed specialized focus to become competitive. my friends told me about a man in California who had a training facility for racing. Jet not only learned to race, but also became an OTRM,, field champion and CRX2. In Notra meets, he consistently placed. in the top 10 on the East coast, 1 had one Westminster entry with a CRX3. Our- current youngster is ranked #5th in WRA racing for 2003 and placing #9 at tit WRA national in Ohio .
Performance is very important to me. It is the essence of the Whippet. I have met so many friends and more experiences that could have ever imagined.

I was born into a family of sighthound fanciers, seven members of my immediate family have owned and/or bred champions in Greyhounds and Whippets. I get my own first dog, a greyhound, in 1966. Front 1975 I have been actively breeding greyhounds in partnership with my mother, Kari Engh, under the Jet's prefix. With one litter per year on average and no co-bred litters, the Jets have so far produced 129 champions, including 50 internationals and champions in 38 countries around the world.
I owner/breeder-handled Norway's Top Dog of all breeds 2001 Int. Ch. Jet's Once Upon A Dream and repeated this in 2003 with Int. Ch. Jet's Something in the Way U Smile.
The first whippet, Ch. Bohem Moder Svea joined the household in 1975. Her son Int. Ch. Gange-Rolv, was Norway's Top Whip pet 1951, shown by myself. Several whippet imports have followed, notably lnt. Ch. Rothbury Bonecrusher from Australia, Int. Ch. Emotion du Manoir de le Grenouille front France and Int. Ch. Dumbriton Emotion from the UK , all #1 Whippets more than once.
I was approved to judge in. 1987 and judge sighthounds only. have officiated in 35 European countries as well as Australia, New Zealand , LISA, Canada , Mexico , South Africa , Morocco , Israel , Singapore, the Phillipines, and Japan. Appointments include several FCI World, European, Asian and. Americas dog shows as well as Crufts. I have judged more than a dozen whippet specialties in Scandanavia, the UK, the European Continent, Australia, New Zealand , South Africa , Canada as well as two previous AWC specialties.
In my non-doggy life, I am a veterinarian and a Doctor of Science. I am currently working as Head of the Department for animal welfare at the Norwegian Animal Health Authority. My partner Age and I live with our twelve dogs south of Oslo, Norway . I am much looking forward to judging our National Specialty, the first overseas judge to be so honored.
The first whippet I remember was Ch. Courtenay Fleetfoot of Pennyworth; the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin ran a photo af ter his BIS win at Westminster, and I remember thinking, "Someday I want to have a dog like that."
So in 1975, otter our aging and beloved miniature poodle passed on, I began my search for a whippet, which took me to a local dog show. There, I met several people who later became friends, though they didn't have a puppy for me. I found a puppy about a month afterward. Despite the breeder's admonition that "Whippet puppies can be a bit destructive," I refused to use a crate and paid the penalty. At one point, I remember thinking that Zap had actually ripped apart every book on my shelves, only to find that it was simply one entire book that was now confetti (it was, appropriately, Jaws). Zap and I went to obedience school, where I was originally told by the instructors that whippets had no aptitude for training; to our mutual surprise, we finished third in the final exam.
Somehow, during my search for whippets, the show bug infected me, leading me to as many local shows as I could find, and eventually to the AWC Specialty at Enterprise Farm in 1975. I was introduced to Mrs. Wear, and also met Mrs. Margaret Hodge, Frank Hill, and the owner of Ch. Garden City's Sleepy Mouse, BOB at Westminster back in the mists of time. All of these people were incredibly kind to this novice and taught me a great deal over the years
I was also fortunate to discover performance events at about the same time. The Delaware Valley Afghan Hound Club sponsored a held trial at Vale Vue, and Zap and I want to watch. We both became intense fans.
Over the years, I've enjoyed my whippets in alt their field of activities; the CDs, bench championships and field championships have been landmarks more for the world at large. Millrace whippets have accomplishments at many levels; but most of all, I've been proud of the fact that they've been wonderful companions for their owners and that through them, I've been so many, places and met so many people.
I was born in a small ruining town in southeast Arizona and attended high school there. After graduation I enrolled in Northern Arizona University . After graduation I moved to south ern Califronia where I worked for Rockwell international and met the lady who became my wife, Nancy.
Nancy acquired a lovely hitch puppy from a breeder in the area, Nancy was successfully showing her but was not able to win the majors, so we hired a professional handler Living on a tight budget, I decided that I could handle her myself but my wife didn't agree with me. However, Nancy and a friend gave me a puppy to practice with. I developed pretty well as a handler and others started asking me to show their dogs. I enjoyed it arid did quite Eventually I was advised by an ARC Field Rep to apply for a handler's license.
In 1977 when AKC discontinued licensing handlers, I was licensed for all breeds. 1 continued handling and was very successful, finishing many dogs of all breeds. In June of 1980, I retired from Rockwell In ternational and handled dogs full time until the summer and 1996. Several years after Nancy passed away, I applied for a posi tion with the American Ken nel Club and moved to Raleigh to work at the North Carolina office.
After working at AKC for six years, I retired as manager of Performance Events and decided to pursue my judge's license. I was approved in January 2003 for most of the Herding Group and Junior Showm anship. I have had several assignments in Juniors and enjoy it tremendously. I thrill at the sight of a young exhibitor giving their full attention to their dog and executing a beautiful presentation in the show ring. After all, it is a sport deserving of our best athletes.
It is an honor to have been asked to this assignment, and I wish to thank all the members of the American Whippet Club for inviting me.
I became involved with purebreds as a youngster Begin ning in 1952, I have been a trainer, breeder and exhibitor of Boxers. In 1959, I added Afghan Hounds to the household, followed by Shih Tzus. I have shown my dogs in Junior Showmanship, Obedience and Conformation.
I began judging Novice Obedience in 1966, received my Open License in 1969, and my utility License in 1971. In 1974, I began judging conformation, starting with Afghan Hounds and now judge all Hound breeds, all Toy breeds and all but six of the Non-Sporting breeds. In addition I am approved for Junior Showmanship and Best in Show.
I have judged many prestigious obedience and breed as signments, including many National Specialty Shows, throughout 47 states. In the breed rin g , I have been blessed with nutty wonderful Whippet assignments. Topping the list of course is the National Specialty in 2001, as well as several American Whippet Club regional specialty shows and supported services. I also judged the Whippets at the Westminster K. C. Show in 1991, as well as the American Whippet Club Top Twenty event in 1995. This will be the third time I will be judging Obedience classes for the American Whippet Club.
In 2001, I judged the Hound ( Troup at the Westminster Kennel Club show and several breeds at the AKC/ Eukanuba American Dog Classic.
I judged Obedience at the ACK/Eukanuba Obedience Invita tional in 2002, making me the only person to judge both the breed and obedience at the AKC Invitational events.
In 2002, I received the American kennel Club Lifetime Achievement Award for Obedience. I am honored and excited about this assignment and I look forward to it with great anticipation. I know it will be another awesome experience for me. The Whippet breeders and exhibitors will always be part of my family and I will always cherish their love and support.
