Art Idleman

February 3, 1925 — January 31, 2001

To celebrate a life, one that was so full, one that was so respected, one that was so loved is truly a testament to the man. His name was John Arthur Clifton Idleman. It took four names to describe this man. Perhaps not in statue, but certainly describing Art and his life.

Art was born in Arcola, Illinois and graduated from Paris High school in 1943. He immediately went in to the service for 3 years where he served in WW II in the South Pacific in a hospital unit. He went to Yale University and Washington and Jefferson Colleges and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in industrial chemistry. He retired as assistant chief chemist from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Orange Texas. In 1948 he married his bride of 52 years, Bobbie. They had two children, Lynda and James and have two grand children Shane, and Allyson.

One of Art's true loves was dogs and he could and would tell you about each and every one of them, just as he did about his children and his grand kids. This is what gave him is life and this is what gave him that Zest for life.

He and Bobbie started in Boxers in 1954 and showed them until retirement. They got their first Whippet in 1975 and have produced and finished quite a few under the kennel name BAR'0. In 1992 they owned the first Whippet, Ch. Bo_Bett's Plum Perfect SC, LCM3, CGC, ROM to win the Gillette Cup at the II. Art became an ASFA judge and was region 7 director for 5 years. Last April's ACOD, he was elected 2nd Vice President.

He served as President and Show Chairman for the Beaumont, Texas Kennel Club, President, Treasurer and Show Chairman for the Metropolitan Atlanta Whippet Association. He was a member of the Georgia Boxer Club and the American Boxer Club. He was presently on the board of the Suwannee Valley Kennel Club, Lake City, Florida.

He was well known to do a job to perfection , and would always give 100%. The Whippet world lost a great friend and mentor when we lost Art. Many a person in the Whippet community can say that Art gave them guidance and helped them get started in the sport of dogs.

One thing is for sure, and That is that this man loved lure coursing. Every time you see a plan come together as it was with the II, think of Art.

Every time you see a hound run its course to perfection, think of Art.Art is gone but he has left something behind. He has left a memory of joyful events, hard work, respect, pride, and dignity More than that, he has left in each one of us the thought of a life lived to the fullest. This would be his wish for all of us to take in to our lives, and hope that we will all follow him in his example.

Kent Delaney

Kent became involved with purebred dogs before he was a teenager. Starting in 1952, he has been a breeder, trainer and exhibitor of Boxers. In 1959 he added Afghan Hounds to his bousehold, followed by Shih Tzus, and he now lives with a cat. Kent has shown his dogs in breed, Obedience and Junior Showmanship classes.

He began judging Novice Obedience in 1966, received his Open license in 1969, and his Utility license in 1971. Kent also judges in the breed ring starting with Afghan Hounds in 1974 and now does all Hound breeds, all Toy breeds and all but six of the Non-Sporting breeds. He is also approved to judge Junior Showmanship and Best in Show.

In the breed ring, Kent has been blessed with many wonderful Whippet assignments. Having judges several American Whippet Club specialty shows and supported entries: including Ravenna, 1984: American Whippet - Western, 1987: Agathon, 1989: American Whippet- Eastern, 1980 and 1998. He has also judges Whippets at the Westminster K.C. show in 1991 as well as the American Whippet Club Top Twenty event in 1995.

In the Obedience ring, Kent has judges Obedience classes at the National Specialty Shows in the following Hound breeds: Afghan Hound Club of America, Basset Hound Club of America, National Beagle Club of America, American Bloodhound Club, Borzoi Club of America, Dachshund Club of America, Irish Wolfhound Club of America, Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States, Scottish Deerhound Club of America and the American Whippet Club.

Kent has been blessed with many wonderful Obedience and Breed assignments throughout forty-seven states of the United States, including many National Specialty shows. This will be the second time he will be judging Obedience classes for the American Whippet Club.

In February of this year, Kent judged the Hound Group at Westminster K.C. What an awesome experience it was. I am honored and excited about this assignment and I look forward to it with great anticipation. I know it will be another awesome experience for me.

Heather Queener

As far back as I can remember, I have always wanted to have dogs. Unfortunately, as a young child, I was allergic to nearly everything with fur, so a pet was out of the question. My family became involved in pure-bred dogs when they acquired a Rhodesian Ridgeback when I was in college. This bitch was show quality, but she hated the shows, so she never finished. I jumped into the world of Ridgebacks with my first dog in 1984; he quickly taught me all about the breed through his intelligence and hardheadedness. He was a sound dog who I was able to finish in 13 shows.. despite my novice handling. That was all I needed and I have been hooked into the dog show world ever since! Shortly after acquiring this dog, I became the proud owner of a whippet bitch, a "Paul" daughter who I got from Stacey Davis. Although my main focus in dogs has been Ridgebacks, I have always had at least one whippet sharing the household.

I have been moderately successful in Ridgebacks; I have taken RWB and WD at recent national specialties. Last year (2000) I finished 7 Ridgebacks of my breeding, and one of my bitches was top producer for the year according to the Pedigree ratings. Ridgebacks of my breeding are also represented in coursing, obedience, and pet therapy.

I have definite ideas about hounds: they should be functional and balanced, and should look every inch the breed they represent. I see balance as both mental and physical; I think that form and function are like nature/nurture, and cannot be separated. I enjoy evaluating dogs, with an emphasis on their strengths.

In my "regular" life, I hold a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, and spend much of my professional time working with children. I have two of my own, two little girls, whom my "doggy" friends tell me are quite well socialized and generally tolerable! I also have a wonderful husband, who (unfortunately!) is a Saint Bernard breeder of some repute.

Marti Bradford

In 1974, my significant other gave me an encylopedia of dogs and there I saw a picture of the Whippet for the very first time. Immediately I knew that this was one of the world's most beautiful creatures and that I had to learn more about them.

Bob (Carrob) had co-bred whippets with Henry and Pat Speight (Pathens), including the lovely BIS Ch. Pathens Sasha of Can-ob. I convinced him to take me to my first dog show, introduce me to these wonderful, soft and loving animals - and the rest is history.

I was so very fortunate to have Henry and Pat Speight and Joan Frailey mentor me in this breed. The Speights spent many hours tutoring me on structure and movement, while Joan sat with me at ringside and discussed the whippets in the ring. It was Joan who searched for and found my foundation stock - Ch. Windemere Four Leaf Clover and Ch. Cinder's Misty Morning - and penned the kennel name of Martigra for me. Luck smiled kindly on me and in a limited breeding program I produced over 20 champions - among them group winning and placing animals.

In 1989 I expanded my interests to greyhounds and have added several of this breed to my family - producing multi-BIS, multi-SBIS, multiple group winning and placing dogs. However, it is still the Whippet who holds that very special spot in my heart as my first purebred show dog and the best foot and back warmer that ever crawled between the sheets!

Perhaps the greatest honor I have ever received from my peers is this invitation to judge our wonderful breed in their Golden Years. For this I say Thank You! and I look forward to this trip down memory lane
