THE SELECT AWARD
Often at a National Specialty the number of quality dogs in competition tar exceeds the number of top awards available. The judge must choose only one Best of Breed and one Best of Opposite Sex.
The awarding of a Select Rosette acknowledges that the animal was under consideration for Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex. The judge is indicating her recognition of an exceptional animal who could, on another day, merit a top award.
The American Whippet Club allows for ten Select Awards to be presented in addition to Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex. The judge may, at her discretion, award all or none of the rosettes. Receiving a Select Award is indeed a significant honor.
SELECT AWARDS: 10 inch Porcelain Commemorative Plate
ROSETTE— Silver and Blue

Joan Goldstein - All Specialty
Classes and Junior Showmanship
My history in Whippets dates back to 1958. It was at that time that my husband Bob and I decided that we wanted something smaller than the Greyhound we had as our first dog. It was a natural progression to the Whippet. We obtained our first bitch from the Mardomere Kennels. I do not know her breeding since at that time no papers were given. She was a wonderful and loving pet and was our only dog until 1963 when we went to a dog show and saw show whippets for the first time. At this show was the dog that would forever color my image of the breed; Ch. Morshor's Whirlaway. He was a spectacular show-dog and even to my untrained eye, he was perfection. We contacted Dianne Moore, and told her we wanted one that looked just like him, that same wonderful blue-grey color and great temperament. She had a litter out of his litter sister, Ch. Mor-shor's Hop-To-It Girl by Ch. Seven League Sunday Best and there was one bitch left.
We fell in love with her because she was white with blue brindle markings, and had one ear that stuck straight up in the air. The ear cinched it, and we came home with the bitch who started it all, Ch. Mor-Shor's Orestia, C.D. We never regretted our choice. While we never bred much, (I think we had a total of somewhere around 15 litters in 35 years), I always had Flame's (Whirlaway)— image in my mind and tried to reproduce that image with every litter that was born.
Orestia was bred to Ch. Seyberne's Gallant Fox and produced our first litter. Out of this came four Champions, one of which was Ch. Gold Dust's All That Glitters, whom we kept. On the day she finished her Championship, she was bred to Ch. Mor-Shor's Bold N'Courageous. This was our "Glitter Litter" in which was Ch. Gold-Dust's Florentine, Ch. Gold-Dust's Dazzlin Doubletake and of course, Ch. Gold-Dust's Twenty-Four Karat. There were many discussions in the fancy about who was the best of the three, each bitch having her supporters. They all had their share of exciting wins. Florentine finishing at Westminster, Raz, winning at Channel Cities, and Kari becoming the winningest Specialty Winner of her time, always breeder, owner handled. She finished at the Eastern Specialty going BOS from the classes, won BOB at the Midwest Specialty twice, and BOB at the Western Specialty twice where she also won the Santa Barbara K.C. Hound Group in 1976. She was also BOB at Westminster in 1976. This was the year that our greyhound, Ch. Grey Roc Winged Victory also won the breed and a Group placement at the Garden. This all occurred during the mid to late seventies.
Kari was bred to Ch. Stoney Meadow's North Star, and from this breeding came Ch. Gold-Dust's Satin Finish and Ch. Gold-Dust's Limited Edition. These two bitches are behind some of the top winning dogs of today. Both were bred to Oscar, Limited Edition producing Quiche, the foundation bitch of Starline Kennels, and Satin Finish producing Ch. Gold-Dust's Joint Venture, (Coach), Ch. Gold-Dust's Champagne Parti and Ch. Gold-Dust's Let's Parti.
From these dogs have come BIS, BIF, SBIS, Futurity Winners, Award of Merit Winners as well as Field Champions. Ch. Gold-Dust's Pretty Penny won the National Futurity in 1995, and her litter brother, Ch. Gold-Dust's Precious Mettle is an Award of Merit winner. One of his daughters, Ch. Gold Dust's Piece of Cake, (Sara), is the last dog that was shown and finished by me.
I am proud to say that I truly feel that I have kept the "look" I loved, the function that counts, and that this look and performance have been passed down to the many Gold-Dust descendents being shown in various parts of the U.S. and the World today.
I want to thank all of you who gave me the great honor of judging this National Specialty. I cannnot think of anything that I have done in dogs that made me prouder.

Obedience
I started training dogs in obedience as a very young child. Even then (about 12-14) I knew I wanted to train and show in obedience. Then I decided that I wanted a Doberman Pinscher. After I graduated high school that dream came true. In 1958 1 started teaching my 8 month old puppy in obedience, 21 months later we completed her utility degree. In 1960 she was rated one of the top ten Dobermans in the country. Can you guess who had a swelled head? My day would come.
Time passed, I trained two Vizsla's one with CDX, one UD. Both completed their Championships. I became an obedience judge in 1970. Showed German Shepherd Dogs in breed and obedience and obtained a Miniature Poodle (showed only in obedience). Frankly I did well with all my dogs, all had CDX or UD. Then I tore up my left foot, had surgery and no balance on any turns. Since I was judging a lot, I didn't miss showing too much.
February 1988 I represented the obedience fancy as one of twelve members the AKC invited to be on the obedience committee, when among other things, we lowered the jump heights.
In 1992 two major things happened in my life. I moved to Pittsburgh (job transfer) and decided to show again. I had continued to train others through-out this time period when I hadn't been showing. So after 18 years I returned to the ring. Remember I said I was cocky? My time had come. Often when one trains a dog and gets another one you believe that, with how much I know, and how smart he is ,"we'll just skip through this". We did in Novice - 3 shows (scores in the mid '90's range). Open B blew first 3 shows on recall - not the "Drop", the "Come". Then aced out the next three and finished in mid 90's. Then my day came! Utility was a different story. I did not train consistently and Casey showed it. NEVER have I been so embarrassed in the ring. I was showing in Utility B and I, or he , made a jackass out of both of us. I never considered quitting, but I had to back up and re-train consistently. We finished the last leg 1st in Utility B. Someday hopefully we will finish the OTCH. I learned a lot of humility during this time period. If one stays with dogs long enough your day will come, both the gray and the sunny days.
In the meantime I have acquired a Papillon. He has a TD, CDX and working on utility. He has NA and two legs on OA in agility. So we are having a lot of fun together.
After forty years of training and thirty years of judging I have learned: 1) that all dogs can be trained and all handlers can be trained, in both cases, some are easier than others. 2) Teamwork is a special feeling between a dog and a handler. 3) It is fun to work in breed, obedience, agility or any performance sport. 4) Hang loose and have fun with your dog, life will be a lot more enjoyable, and there is always tomorrow.
Dr. Billings - Veteran Sweepstakes
Dr. Billings, a research physician, and his wife purchased their first Whippet, Bright's Flyalong Monacrch ( a Wingedfoot Marksman son) in England in 1956. They have owned, bred and showed Whippets ever since under the Flyalong prefix. Dr. Billings was approved to judge Whippets in 1979, and Greyhounds about 10 years later. He has judged specialties and supported entries in the United States, Canada and England . He has twice been a member of the AWC Board of Directors and headed the AWC study of the "longhaired whippets" in 1982-82; he also headed the committee that drafted the revised Whippet breed standard in 1983. He is an Emeritus Professor of Preventive Medicine at The Ohio State University.

Triathlon Conformation
My introduction to whippets was back in 1977 when I saw them for the first time at the barn where I boarded my horse. In 1979 I went to my first lure trial and fell in love with the breed and in 1981 I got my first whippet. I went to several coursing events both in the U.S. and in Canada. At the same time, I also got my indoctrination into racing. In 1984 I got my second whippet and he could do everything, show, course, race and be my pet! That was Am./Can. Ch. Allerei's Cabin Fever LCM. He was my foundation stud dog and in 1987 I leased Ch. Spectre White Hot from Deann Christianson of Chelsea fame. That started Strebor Kennels. Since then, I have bred for the dual-purpose whippets. I have bred dogs that have been successful in the ring both show and obedience, on the coursing field and on the racetrack. They have achieved SBIS, BIS, BIF, Ch's, CD, LCM and the list goes on. I believe that one whippet can be successful in the ring and in the field. One with conformational soundness, athletic ability in the field and an endearing and sweet temperament. I take great pride in the accomplishments of my breeding program and therefore am equally proud to judge the triathlon. I believe in and respect all the participants for the time an effort they put into their dogs.
I want to thank everyone who believes in themselves and their dos, and for bringing them and participating in the triathlon. I wish all exhibitors the best of luck and commend them on their hard work.
Jean Balint - Altered Classes
I was born in England and came with my husband and family to the USA in 1965. I became a Whippet lover and owner in May of 1969. Using the kennel name, Wyndsor, I bred my first litter in 1970. From that litter I got my first two AKC champions.
In the early years I was very involved in both showing and racing. Due to my work and trying to raise a family, I realized I could not to both. In order to give more time to my family I decided to limit showing and continue racing. Racing has been my passion and love for the past 28 years.
My first judging assignment was the Sweepstakes at the prestigious Santa Barbara Show. This was in 1972. Since then I have judged many sweepstakes and matches, all of which I have greatly enjoyed.
I am proud to be asked to judge the altered classes. As many of you know I have always encouraged people to spay and neuter. I thank you for giving me this privilege and wish you all a happy, successful National Specialty.
