DIONNE E. BUTT
SPORTING FIELD'S
P.O. Box 336 - Toms Brook, VA 22660

Dionne Butt or "Debbie" has been breeding and exhibiting Whippets under the Sportingfield's prefix for 27 years. Sportingfield's was established by Debbie's father, the late Mr. James E. Butt as a successful Poodle and Cocker Spaniel kennel that bred the Toy Group winning Poodle at the last Morris and Essex Dog Show.
In the late '50's Mr. Butt married Dionne Ogolvie and later purchased a Whippet puppy in the '70's for her as an anniversary gift. That was the beginning of the
Sportingfield's line from which five generations of Best in Show winners has produced more than 100 American champions.
Among the champions owned and exhibited by Sportingfields are two top winning Whippets, Ch. Sportingfield's Clansman, the top winning Whippet of all time with 59 Best In Shows and his grandson, which Debbie co-bred, Ch. Sportingfield's Kinsman with 56 U.S. and 3 Canadian Best In Show as well as an AWC National Specialty Best In Show. All of Kinsman's wins were breeder-owner handled by Debbie. Nineteen of Clansman's Best In Show were won with Debbie as his handler including his first (when Debbie was 17 years old) and also his last. She won her first all breed Best In Show at the age of 15 with Ch. Winterfold's Bold Bid. Debbie also breeds top quality smooth fox terriers which are multiple Best In Show winners and Best of Breed winners at Montgomery County Kennel Club (an all terrier show).
In 1985 Debbie's father passed away and she and her mother "Donnie" carried on the breeding program at Sportingfield's, and since the passing of her mother in 1995, Debbie continues to breed and exhibit Sportingfield's Whippets. She is the mother of three girls who like to show dogs as much as their mother. Besides showing and breeding dogs, Debbie likes to hike, ride her horses, ski and read.
Mary Beth Arthur

My families involvement with Whippets began in April of 1963 when my Mother and Father allowed us to acquire a young female, with the ''purchase price" being pick puppy from her first litter. The resulting litter produced 12 puppies, and that was the beginning of "Marial" Whippets. Marial is the combination of the first two initials of my parents' three children -- Mary, Richard and Alan. Since then, "Marial" Whippets have competed successfully in almost every canine competitive activity, winning specialties, NPRs, NOTRAS obedience trials and CWA competitions.
My involvement with the American Whippet Club includes service on its Board of Directors. 1972-91, holding various Officers positions, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President. I have prepared drawings for the AWC's Illustrated Whippet Standard, have been breed columnist for the AKC Gazette Pure-Bred Dogs 1980 -present, and am presently Chair of the AWC's Judges Education Committee. I was very honored to receive the AWC's Certificate of Achievement in 1989.
I am presently licensed to judge Whippets, Salukis and Junior Showmanship. My husband is also a member of the American Whippet Club and a licensed Whippet judge.
My goal is to maintain the versatility of the Whippet as a beautiful and successful athlete.
It is truly a privilege to judge this most prestigious event. It will be a thrill of my lifetime to be surrounded by so many wonderful Whippets all in one place. Good luck to everyone.
Michael Peter Pumilia

Michael Peter Pumilia got his first dog, a Dalmatian, while in college in 1970. He started training and exhibiting Dalmatians in breed and obedience in 1972, although more recently there has been Vizsla in the house. Over the years there was the good fortune to live and show throughout the United States, both East and West coasts. The DaIs earned numerous High in Trials and High combineds among the various obedience titles. One highlight was having the 9th and 13th DaIs to ever complete UDT's. One of them placed eight years in the Top Ten "First and Foremost" for the breed, three times as Number One; once in the Top Ten Non Sporting Group. In conformation, several dogs of the two different breeds were Group placing Champions.
As a trainer, Michael started conducting classes in 1974 in Florida where all these dog activities started. Then it was on to California and since 1980, the Atlanta area where he mostly has taught advanced classes. Also there has been one book, "Training the Competitive Dog", published in the mid 1980's; and numerous articles for "Front & Finish" and other national and local publications since 1975.
Among awards received are the Gaines Medal For Good Sportsmanship and the Dog World Award for Outstanding Contributions to Dogs.
In 1979, the AKC approved Mike to judge obedience. In the years that followed, assignments have taken him South to Tallahassee, out to Texas, westward to LA, north to Portland, across to Detroit, around to Maryland, and all the way south to Miami - and everywhere in between. Said Mike, "It has been alot of fun, meeting new friends, greeting old acquaintances, and always - the dogs. I'm looking forward to many more years in the Sport and being able to say "Hi, Y'all!"
Madison M. Weeks

Our Veteran Sweepstakes judge was born in, and has been a life long resident of Jacksonville, Florida. He graduated for The Bolles School and the University of Florida .
He was presented to his first dog, a Smooth Fox Terrier, by his parents who owned one at his birth. He has had a dog of one breed or another ever since, except for two years, while in the military service.
During his stint with the military, the majority of his weekend leaves were spent attending dog shows in California, his military home base.
His active dog show career and lifetime interest of showing and owner handling began as a teenager. After military service - Waybrooke Kennels was formed as a partnership with Hubert Thomas, his life long friend, co-handler and co-owner of the dogs registered under the kennel prefix "Waybrooke". Together, this partnership has bred and/or finished over 120 champions - in Standard Poodles, Scottish Terriers, Smooth Fox Terriers, Norwich Terriers, Greyhounds and Whippets. their show and breeding programs have produces Group and Best in Show winners in all of the aforementioned breeds.
Madison 's judging career formally began in November of 1995 when he was approved to judge the breeds mentioned above and has continued until the present. Being asked to judge the Veteran Sweepstakes at the 11th AWC National Specialty - Atlanta is an honor that he graciously and humbly accepted. He thanks the American Whippet Club, it's members, and exhibitors for extending this judging assignment to him and exhibiting their "grand oldtimers" to him.
DR. CONNIE BRUNKOW

I have always been fascinated with animals -had pets of all sorts as a youngster, including an Irish Setter and a Miniature Schnauzer. I encountered my first Greyhound about 1972, while visiting a friend, and fell in love with sighthounds on the spot. I bought a Greyhound dog, and later a bitch, from the Windholme Kennels of Harry T. Peters. It was while showing the Greyhounds that I saw a Whippet, and
I was hooked on the breed. My first Whippet came, in 1977, from Dr. John Shelton of Sheridan fame, and was a younger sister of Ch. Sheridan Marial's Nikita. I was lucky to also acquire an older dog who was a full brother to Ch. Pinetop's Chatterbox. These two were the foundation of my kennel, Fallowfield.
In 1985, I took "time off" to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian. Graduating in 1989 from the University of Illinois, I was able to begin showing again, and also to get more involved with performance activities, which both I and my dogs enjoy very much. I have been a member of the AWC since 1979, and a member of two all-breed kennel clubs, holding several different positions within these clubs. In 1992, I was made chairman (and later co-chair) of the Health Committee of the AWC, a position which I had unofficially held for several years, and which I consider as important as anything else I've done.
I am fortunate to have been taught and mentored by several old- time breeders & Whippet aficionados. From these individuals, I have learned to value the dual purpose, or really, the multi-purpose Whippet. In my breeding program, I have tried to select for animals which are physically & mentally able to perform in the field as well as in the ring, and on the couch.
I have recently been provisionally approved to judge Whippets, and am honored to be asked to judge at this Specialty.
Lynne Underwood

My love affair with Sighthounds began at the age of 18; and some 30 years later, I have not tired of my favorite pastime of just observing these fine animals. My main interest is to preserve and perpetuate the dual purpose Sighthound; a dog that not only can run or hunt, but is successful in maintaining their individual breed type and characteristics. I am currently licensed to judge Whippets, Salukis and Junior handling
My involvement with Whippets began in 1963, and little did I know it would be the start of a 34 year love affair! Because I knew little of this breed, I began my quest to learn as much as I could. When I purchased my first Whippet, I knew little about the breed, but through careful research, collecting and compiling information, I ended up with 6 Whippets in no time. I became licensed in 1982 to judge this wonderful breed.
My philosophy of breeding is to produce a multi-functional dog that can excel in both show ring and field competition. Of the first litter I bred, (out of Eyleland Hannah, bred to Ch. Emberson of Course, ARM) I got 99.5% of what I wanted. These pups (a litter of 12) went on to each earn titles in either the show ring, racing or open field coursing. I am neither pro-racing nor pro-showing of Whippets. If a dog never sees the ring or track is immaterial to me. What I am is pro-Whippets!
I love an elegant, sporting hound type of dog with effortless movement, lots of reach and drive, and that exudes the look of a dual purpose animal that will excel on the race track or in the show ring.
JUDGE # 1

Marie Adams
10307 W. Oakwood Rd. , Franklin, WI 53132
Marie Adams, a Saluki breeder and exhibitor for almost 30 years, has bred several generations of conformation and lure coursing champions. She and her husband live in southeastern Wisconsin with a dozen or so Salukis.
A very active lure coursing judge, generally at 25, or more, trials per year, Marie is always happiest when she has Whippets as an assignment as she finds them generally the most competitive, well conditioned and intense athletes of all the sighthounds. She is looking forward to judging Junior Coursing and the ASFA Trial at this Whippet National Specialty.
JUDGE # 2

Janet Lotz
1331 Mink St. S.W. , Patalaska, OH 43062
I grew up in a family which included dogs, cats, and any other stray beasts that wandered up on the porch. Since my father was in the military and meant moving from place to place, some of the family pets were quite exotic. It is no surprise then that I did my undergraduate studies in Biology at The Ohio State University.
Upon graduation, I began adult life with a Siamese cat and an Afghan hound puppy. Fifteen years ago, my friend, Helen Haas, an Afghan hound breeder, introduced me to lure coursing. The puppy that I got from her became a Field Champion and LCM in short order and I was "hooked". Nine years ago, Jack Southam suggested, then encouraged me to become an ASFA judge. Since then I've had four Afghan hounds and one Borzoi with LCM titles.
Today, I live in central Ohio and teach chemistry at a nearby high school. There are five dogs and one cat residing with me and the dogs and I love to spend our weekends lure coursing.
