AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB SCHEDULE OF POINTS - DIVISION 9
State of California - Effective May 15, 1990

The Points towards a Championship shall be awarded to the Winners Dog and Bitch of each breed or variety based on the actual number of dogs or bitches competing in that breed or variety.

If the dog designated Winners Dog or Winners Bitch is also awarded Best of Breed or Variety, the dogs of both sexes that have been entered for Best of Breed or Variety competition and that have been defeated in such competition, shall be counted In addition to the dogs that competed in the regular classes for its sex in calculating championship points.

If the dog designated Winners Dog or Winners Bitch is also awarded Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed or Variety, the dogs of its own sex that have been entered for Best of Breed or Variety competition that have been defeated in competition for Best of Opposite Sex, shall be counted in addition to the dogs that competed in the regular classes for its sex in calculating championship points.

After points have been computed for Winners Dog and Winners Bitch subject to the above two stipulations, the dog awarded the Best of Winners shall be credited with the number of points calculated for Winners Dog or Winners Bitch, whichever is greater.

In counting the number of eligible dogs in competition, a dog that is disqualified, or that is dismissed, excused or ordered from the ring by the judge, or from which all awards are withheld shall not be included. Any dog which shall have won fifteen points shall become a Champion of Record, if six or more of said points shall have been won at two shows with a rating of three or more championship points each and under two different judges, and some one or more of the balance of said points shall have been won under some other judge or judges than the two judges referred to above.

Miss Carol Willumsen

As a child, my parents always had at least one dog. I grew up with a field-type English Setter. Then I got a dog of my own, a Cocker Spaniel bitch with a "Pennyworth" prefix and bred several litters. When Pennyworth switched its allegiance to Whippets, I was devastated. How could anyone go from an adorable, cuddly, fuzzy Cocker to a sleek, thin, curvy and sort of aloof Whippet? It took awhile (about 20 years) but I soon learned the truth. I obtained my first Whippet in 1968 and it's been a love affair ever since. I have done very limited breeding, but have had some success under the "Willcare" name, with 10 Champions and 2 C.D.

First and foremost, my Whippets are my house pets. Because house room has always been a problem, the number of dogs I have at one time is limited. Presently, I live with three geriatrics, one five year old and one three year old.

I joined the American Whippet Club in 1968 and have been an active member from the start. I started judging in 1979 and now I do nine Hound breeds and Junior Showmanship. I have had the privilege of judging several AWC Specialty Shows, and many Supported Entries, but I know that judging this 4th National Specialty will be the highlight of my entire life. I wish to thank each and everyone for inviting me and for allowing me to have this great and fabulous honor.

 

 

JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP
CLASSES

 

Mrs. Audrey Sutton

My husband and I received our first Italian Greyhound as a gift in 1963. I began showing a puppy bitch from my first litter in 1965 and have been breeding and showing under the kennel name of West-winds Italian Greyhounds since. I enjoyed handling my own dogs, finishing 23 Champions and a few more for friends. In 1988 I put my breeding program on hold and applied for judging approval for Italian Greyhounds and Junior Showmanship. My appreciation of other sighthound breeds began with my interest in the history of the Italian greyhound. My appreciation for the beauty of sight- hounds in art started a collection of greyhounds, whippets and Italian greyhounds in porcelain, bronze and print form.

(It should be mentioned here that Mrs. Sutton is the owner and breeder of the great Ch. Westwind Sweet and Sassy who was the Number 1 Italian Greyhound in 1987-88.)

ALL OBEDIENCE CLASSES - Mr. Alvin Lee

Our Obedience Judge, Alvin Lee, has long been a friend of the Whippet exhibitor in Obedience here on the West Coast. Al is a well known judge in this area, much liked because of his sensitivities toward his exhibits. Al has been judging obedience for 19 years, and his experience in dogs far outdates that time.

Al Lee has trained many different breeds in the obedience ring, including Boxers, Dobermans and Italian Greyhounds. He began stewarding at dog shows in 1957, and since getting his approval for obedience he has judged in Alaska, Hawaii, Ohio, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Washington, oregon, Wyoming, South Dakota and Idaho, to mention a few.

Al retired from the U.S. Postal Department where he had been a mail man, and enjoys his retirement with his wife of 44 years, May.

Conditional, unsigned, incomplete, telephoned or telegraphed entries cannot be accepted. Entries without fees will not be accepted.

Exhibitor tickets are photocopies, therefore, please use black ink or typewriter. DO NOT use pencil or colored inks to write entries.

ENTRIES NOT ON OFFICIAL AKC FORMS or photocopies of entry forms without the agreement and rules on the reverse side of the Official AKC entry forms are NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Changes, additions or corrections to entry forms must be received in writing or by telegram prior to close of entries. Changes which are received on the telephone are unacceptable.

OWNERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ERRORS on entry blanks, for entering the same dog twice, or for entering a dog in a class in which it is ineligible to compete, regardless of who makes such errors.

ENTRY FEES WILL NOT BE REFUNDED in event of errors or cancellation of entries after the published closing date, nor in the event a dog is absent, disqualified, sick, lame, in season, excused by the Veterinarian or Judge, or barred from competition by the Show Committee. If because of riots, civil disturbances, or other acts beyond the control of the management, it is impossible to open or complete the show, no refund of entry fee will be made.

Please Note:

Effective for all shows held on or after July 1, 1980, dogs which according to their owners' records have completed the requirements for a championship after the closing of entries for the show but whose championships are unconfirmed, may be transferred from one of the regular classes to Best of Breed or Variety competition, provided this transfer is made by the Superintendent or Show Secretary one half hour prior to the start of any regular conformation judging at the show. (American Kennel Club Rules, Chapter 14, Section 6.)

DOGS NEED TO BE AT THE SHOW only at scheduled time of judging and may leave immediately after unless required for further judging.

DOGS MUST BE READY FOR JUDGING. The Club and/or its Show Secretary will not be responsible for, and are not obligated to furnish any service for notifying exhibitors or their agents of Breed or Class judging. Judges will not wait for any dog holding up a class. Owners or their agents alone are responsible for the presence of their dogs in the judging ring.

THE SHOW-GIVING CLUB, THE SHOW SECRETARY, their agents or employees assumes no responsibility for any loss, damage or injury sustained by exhibitors, handlers, spectators, or to any of their dogs or property, and further assumes no responsibility for injury to any child not under the control of their parents or guardians.

NO DOGS WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE SHOW AREA except those regularly entered in the show. There will be NO SPACE for unentered dogs.

ALL AWARDS as well as Class Cash Prizes will be given in the ring to the person showing the dog.

Dogs with foreign registry are eligible for Puppy Classes and Open Classes, effective 1/1/85.

NO REFUND OF ENTRY FEE FOR BITCHES IN SEASON WHO ARE ENTERED IN OBEDIENCE CLASSES.

Beebe is entered in the Brood Bitch class at this show. If she is absent it probably means that she is in whelp to BIS Ch Sporting Fields Strider.
After two years away from shows, Beebe made a come-back in January of this year by winning BIS at the Southern California Whippet Association specialty. In 1987 she was BIS at the AWC specialty in Santa Barbara, in 1985 she was BOS at that same show, and she also won the biggest-ever AWC supported show (240-plus Whippets).
She is the dam of four champions with five more on the way from her first two litters.

SELECT AWARDS

At a National Specialty often times the number of quality dogs in competition far exceeds the number of top awards available. The judge may choose only one Best of Breed and one Best of Opposite Sex.

The awarding of a Select Rosette acknowledges that this animal was under consideration for Best of Breed or Best of Opposite Sex. The judge is indicating his/her recognition of an exceptional animal who could, on another day, merit a top award.

The American Whippet Club allows for ten Select Awards to be presented in addition to Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex. The judge may at his/her discretion award all or none of the Rosettes. Receiving a Select Award is indeed a significant honor.

CHALLENGE TROPHIES

The following Challenge Trophies are offered at the AWC National Specialty only and will remain in the custody of the Club until permanently retired. For permanent possession, all Challenge Trophies must be won three times by the same owner, not necessarily with the same dog.
