Whippets in Performance Events: 2004

AWC Performance Director
Well...the whippet didn’t just spend the year standing in a show ring...I can tell you that much. This was my first year as the AWC Performance Director and it has amazed me when I look at the number of different events our whippets do (and do well) and the vast number of dogs competing in all of them. This breed is one of extreme versatility, which the following numbers support. Not only are our dogs amazing performers, they are drop dead gorgeous doing what they do!
The following is a compilation of names and statistics of the different performance venues where whippets competed this year. I will present it in alphabetical order using the name of the sponsoring association. Some of the reports include the Top Ten or Twenty dogs in each sport and their owners, the national meet winners (if a national meet is held) and numbers of title winners for 2004. The statistics depend on my source(s) and how much information was available. I have also included pictures of the #1 dogs and national meet winners when possible. The extent of information presented was dependent on a large number of folks more familiar than I in each event. I appreciate all of you who helped contribute information for this report...it is a first of it’s kind for the Whippet Annual. You should all give your whippets a well deserved pat on the back (as well as the treat of their choice) and then give yourself one for allowing your dogs to do what they love to do…perform.

AWC National Performance 2004 : Greensboro
The following is a short report on the numbers of performance competitors at the 2004 National in Greensboro, NC as well as the winning dogs.
Agility
Agility was held on Monday morning at the hotel in the ballroom. There were 62 run-throughs representing 19 classes with a final total of 17 qualifying scores. The top awards went to:
High in Trial and High in Standard Agility: Calvin, UCH UAGI UCD DC Appraxin Callaban Kristobel CD, MC, NA, NAJ, LCM2, CGC, CAVX, owned by Roberta (Bobbie) Lutz
High in JWW Agility and second High in Trial: Hocus Pocus, Clearhounds Heathcliff, owned by Louise Hoelscher.

Obedience
The 2004 trial was split into two days to accommodate the large entry. There were 58 single dog entries, 46 in the regular classes with 22 qualifiers and 12 in the non-regular classes. We also had 1 brace and 1 team.
This year saw a first in a double High In Trial with “Ginger”, Northwinds I’m So Spicy, Am/Can CD, CGC taking the dual honor. Ginger, owned and trained by Irene Mullauer, is a regular participant at the AWC National and put in a fabulous performance to take home the honors. We also had a delightful performance in the High Combined dog, Snap, owned and shown by Susan Delie. Snap won both the Open B and Utility B classes while happily heeling and wagging his tail the entire time.

High in Trial: Northwind’s I’m So Spicy, Am/Can CD, CGC from Novice B with a score of 196.
High Score in the non-regular classes:
Northwind’s I’m So Spicy, Am/Can CD, CGC from the Veterans class with a score of 196.
High Combined: Bo Bett’s Gator Snapper, CDX, Open B: 193 and Utility B: 187.

Triathlon
The triathlon saw another tough field of competitors in 2004 with the top placements being decided by half points. The eventual winner was a multi-titled whippet, “Calvin”, Ch. UCH UAGI UCD DC Appraxin Callaban Kristobel CD, MC, NA, NAJ, LCM2, CGC, CAVX. Calvin showed us that Veterans still have it going on as he won the event just 2 1/2 mo. shy of his 9th birthday. This was the first year the winning dog was able to utilize his agility rather than obedience scores to complete the event total. The Top Ten triathlon winners:

At nearly 9 years old, Calvin won the AWC National Triathlon competition as one of the oldest dogs competing. He also earned his agility Novice Standard Preferred and Novice Jumpers Preferred titles, as well as winning Highest Scoring Standard and Highest Combined in Trial!
Also in ‘04, he earned his UKC UAGII agility title, his ASFA Veteran Field Champion title, and a leg on his agility Open Jumpers Preferred title.
