President: Jack McManus
Vice-President: Yvonne Sovereign
Secretary: Kathy Powers
Treasurer: Chuck Boyd

The Tarheel Whippet Association is now just over two years old and we have been very busy since our report in the last Annual. Last year we stated our plans to bid for the 2004 AWC National Specialty. We are happy to report that our bid was accepted and we will host the 2004 National Specialty in Greensboro, North Carolina.
We will be giving updates throughout the coming year on all the details and we are asking for your support. Filling guest rooms at the host hotel is of the utmost importance in making the National a success. We believe our club has made an excellent selection in choosing the Embassy Suites in Greensboro, North Carolina. It is a lovely hotel with lots of amenities and close to the Greensboro Airport.
For Tarheel Whippet Association activities in 2003, we will be starting our year by hosting an all-hound fun match in January. We hope to do our first AKC “B” Match as soon as we get approval from the AKC.
We will, as in 2002, do a supported entry for the 2nd Annual MAHA Hound Specialty Show. Also in 2003, we will again host racing, with two weekends of back-to-back CWA racing and one WRA/NOTRA racing weekend. Plans are in the making to host some Lure Coursing events as well this year.
We have had wonderful support from our club members in North Carolina and the surrounding states. We hope to continue to grow and present whippet events to the fancy.

Ch. Krislyn Live and Up Close

Charlie had a lot of fun in 2002. He finished his championship one day past his first birthday with two
BOBs over specials, one at a supported entry where he went on to a Group 2 from the 6-9 class. He just started his coursing career and is half way to his ASFA FCh in 4 trials.

SBIS Ch. Mimbres Zuni Warrior

(Ch. Allerei’s Tax Refund x Ch. Alerek’s Mimbres Britta Frank)

Spider spent most of 2002 “Showing Off.” He started the year by winning the first South Central American Whippet Club Regional Specialty in April. He had numerous Group placements, won a Select Award and the Stud Dog Class at the Metropolitan Atlanta Whippet Association specialty in September, received an invitation to the Eukanuba Invitational, and MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL . . . sired two new champions before he was three years old. Special thanks to his handler, C. L. Eudy,
for his expert presentation of Spider and to Carl Sanders for his South Central Regional win.

Tina is SBIS Ch. Mimbres Zuni Warrior’s and Alerek’s Alluring’s first champion. She finished at fifteen months of age.

Ch. Alerek’s Original Sin

(SBIS Ch. Mimbres Zuni Warrior x Alerek’s Alluring)

Carmen went to “finishing school” in June of 2002, following the spectacular finish of sister Tina. She was shown sparingly over the summer, won a major at the Reliant Park Shows in Houston and was “Showing Off” at the Metropolitan Atlanta Whippet Association’s Specialty for her second major, by going Winners Bitch and Select. She finished quietly in October. Carmen was twenty months old when she finished and was her sire and dam’s second champion.

Merci Isle WILD BLUE YONDER, FCh., CR

(Ch. Milestone Summit One Man Band x Ch. Merci Isle McAllister’s Moxie)

Without limits…

In 2002, she raced and coursed and titled in both!
Needing only a first for her LCM title, she is also well on her way
to her bench title, with multiple Best of Breed wins from the classes!

Racine

Dual Champion Merci Isle Butterfly Ballet, LCM

(Ch. Sporting Field’N Erin Pianoman x Dual Ch. Merci Isle Dreamy Draw, FCh.)

Racine had a phenomenal year on the coursing field! She finished her Lure Courser of Merit title easily with 6 firsts, running with many of the top dogs on the East Coast! She remains in the top 10 nationwide, although she competed just four weekends in 2002! With time out for a fantastic litter this fall, sired by Ch. Windborn Tru-Luv Double Encore, she was able to get two more firsts for her LCM 2 at year’s end.

The Rainbow Bridge
There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food, water, and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly looks up. The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group!

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and embrace. You face is kissed again and again and you look into the eyes of your trusting pet. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

Love, Mom and all the Carry-On Whippets
We will miss you always.

Sunny

Pierce: Chelsea Constant Craving at Sunrise
(Multi BIS/SBIS Ch. Chelsea Made You Look of Sage, JC x Ch. Keynote Chelsea Spun Gold)

Lars: Ch. Surrey Hill’s One Step Beyond
(Ch. Chelsea Champagne, JC x Ch. Surrey Hill Dawn Treader)

Sunny: Esprit Sunrise Serenade
(Ch. Festiva Knickerbocker x Ch. Watch Me Ms. Annie Oakley)

Late 2001, we welcomed two new faces here at Sunrise: Sunny & Pierce. In 2002, these two were brought out for very limited showing. Pierce has accumulated 5 points, with a BOS over specials. Sunny accumulated 7 points, including a 3-point major for WB & BOW at a supported entry under Mr. Charles Roberts. We imagine they will be finished before this comes out. I would like to thank Leslie Taylor and Deann Christianson for co-owning these lovely companions with me.

Lars is our “old” resident (11/30/95). He is a Group-winning and multiple Group-placing couch potato now, who may come out occasionally for a Veteran Class or two. He still thinks his alias, Mr. Puppy, fits him! Thank you Karen Lee, for our handsome man.

In Loving Memory

SBOS Select
Ch. Locar’s Spectacular Bid, JC, TT

October 8, 1987 - February 1, 2002

(Ch. Locar’s Dressed to Kill, ROM x Ch. Locar’s Brittania, ROM)

I was always proud of Bid’s accomplishments in the ring: Select 1993 National, Select #2 and Winner of Veteran Sweeps 1995 National, BOS Midwest Specialty 1998 (at age 101/2, over top Specials), along with numerous Breed wins and Group placements - always owner handled. I’m equally proud of his accomplishments as a sire. From his only 2 litters have come children, grandchildren, and now, great-grandchildren with bench, field and racing titles. Most important, he was a wonderful companion - a kind and loving dog who had great dignity, as well as a silly side that I loved to see emerge. To say that I miss him is an enormous understatement. The void he left in my heart is unfillable, but I’m profoundly grateful to have had the privilege of sharing this remarkable dog’s life.
