2002 was a record breaking year for the Continental Whippet Alliance with a new record of 31 race meets conducted in the United States and Canada. The membership application for the Canadian group Racing for Fun (RFF) was approved in 2002 and its members conducted the first ever CWA Canadian events in Abbotsford, British Columbia, in July. The eighth annual CWA Fun Match was held in Pennsville, New Jersey, in September with Phoebe Booth judging a total entry of 62 dogs. The Labor Day events in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, featured an animal communicator and canine massage therapy. There are now over 650 whippets registered in the CWA. The first ever CWA Annual Photo Contest was judged with the winning photos featured in this issue of the Whippet News Annual.
A new Yahoo Discussion Group for the CWA Board of Directors was created in 2002. At its August meeting, the CWA Board of Directors approved the first ever CWA National Race Meet, sponsored by the Badgerland Whippet Association, to be held August 16, 2003 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It will be held in conjunction with the 9th Annual CWA Fun Match to be judged by Bobbi Mason.

National Futurity
The nineteenth annual American Whippet Club Futurity was held on Tuesday, April 9, 2002. The judge for this event was Ms. Debi Adams (Jade). After sorting through 96 entries, Ms. Adams picked Starline’s Sweet Sensation from the 6-8 month puppy bitch class as her Best in Futurity winner. She was bred by Eric Scott and Lori Lawrence and owned by Lori Lawrence and Kyle Lawrence.
The Best in Futurity winner received $847.89. Class placements were as follows: 1st - $62.99, 2nd - $47.24, 3rd - $31.49, and 4th $15.44.

The Southern California Whippet Association held its 19th specialty show at the Western Hound Association of Southern California show located at “The Oaks” in San Juan Capistrano, California, on June 28, 2002. There was an entry of 111 Whippets, with Sharon Sakson judging 33 class dogs, 52 bitches and 18 specials. Sweepstakes had an entry of 38, judged by Barbara Henderson, DVM.
