"GOOSE" SBIS Ch. O’Run Gustav Nordic Wind, SC, FCh.
American Whippet Club Top 20 four years in a row! AWC Top 20 Event Winner 1998 Gustav is pictured with 14-year-old Grahm Swayze, who took him to the Midwestern and Southern Specialty shows, placing him in the Top 20 for yet another year. Goose is handsome, but his best feature is his big heart. I am so lucky to own this splendid creature. His field and show careers provided me a world of wonderful friends for which I am very grateful. These years have been a ton-o-fun and we now look forward to watching his kids blossom and show.
Karin Buck ~ 1580 Grant Drive, Atlanta, GA 30319 ~ 404-634-1318 Seafire 2000 Ch. Seafire Spectrum of Light, JC - “Aurora” finished her AKC conformation title in June, winning several Best of Breeds, a Group 3, and Winners Bitch and Select at the 1999 AWC Eastern Specialty along the way. She attended her first race meet and finished B Grade as an FTE. In July she was bred to her grandsire “Kestrel” and produced a very promising singleton bitch puppy, Seafire Spectacular (pictured below, right). 2001 will see “Aurora” back on the race track and on the field in pursuit of a field championship. NSBIS, SBIS Ch. Merci Isle Burncoat Babylon, SC, TRP, DPC (pictured below, left) - Veteran glamour boy, “Kestrel”, returned to the race track as an 8 1/2 year old to run the final two meets to qualify him for the CWA Title of Racing Proficiency (TRP) making him a Dual Purpose Champion (DPC). Seafire Shadow of the Moon - “Apollo” started off 2000 by placing 3rd in the Bred-by-Exhibitor class at the AWC National under breeder/judge Joan Goldstein. His winning ways continued and by the end of the summer he had accumulated 12 points, with one major and five Best of Breed wins.

At 7 1/2 years of age, Spot hangs up his muzzle and retires from competitive running. He does so as the number one, all time, competitor in CWA straight racing, with 204 National points and 40 meets wins. Spot also earned 7 1/3 points toward an oval race championship, before reoccurring shoulder problems forced us to give up pursuit of that title 2 years ago. Our goal is for Spot to complete his AKC Excellent Agility title yet in 2001, along with perhaps a couple of other agility titles he has already earned “legs” toward. We feel so lucky to have gotten a once-in-a-lifetime race dog and truly one of the brightest whippets we have ever known. For that, we will always be indebted to Spot’s breeders, Jean and Vince Balint and Mary Beth Arthur, whom we co-owned Spot with for the first years of his life. If we had the resources, we’d probably clone Spotty Boy!

By the end of 1999, Starlet had earned 11 points and a major toward her breed championship, won the large 9-12 month puppy class at the National, earned 1 ARX points toward her race championship and her Junior Courser title. Her future looked bright. Then, in April, 2000, Starlet suffered a bad tear to her cruciate ligament. To say we were disappointed would be a great understatement. After her surgery, we immediately began a program of physical therapy to maximize the possibility of Starlet returning to normal, pain free use of her leg. We also hoped that she’d be sound enough to complete her breed championship. We contacted Dr. Lisa Costello, who guided NSBIS Ch. Elysian A-Few Perrier, LCM to his cruciate recovery a few years back. Lisa provided us with the same 12-week program she followed with Perry. She also answered our questions on therapy techniques and coached us through our plateaus in recovery. By September, Starlet was sound at a brisk trot. In one of her first shows that fall, Starlet won a Best Bred-By-Exhibitor competition under Carol Curry and then on to a Hound Group 2 in the Bred-By-Exhibitor competition. We were elated! On December 17, 2000, less than 8 months after her injury, she picked up a 4-point major under Stan Halley to finish her championship. In celebration of Starlet’s recovery and to thank Lisa Costello for her invaluable assistance, we have made a donation to the Whippet Health Foundation. Keep up the great work!

“Olivia” “Vickie” “Windsor” It was a great year for the kids. Olivia finished her championship with a huge 5-point major and little Vickie picked up her first Best of Breed at 7 months of age, a Best in Sweepstakes and her first major. Windsor continues to make us proud of his wonderful accomplishments, becoming a Canadian Champion and a Top 20 Contender.
Owner/Handler: Alice VandenBussche Co-owner: Kathy Armato / de Sud “Windsor”
It’s been another glorious year for this young boy after his quick finish the previous year. His accomplishments this year included his Canadian Championship: Best in Sweeps and Reserve WD at the National Canadian Whippet Specialty, WD/BOW at the All Hound Specialty in Ontario, Monarch Kennel Club, and the Kilbride Kennel Club, all in two weekends! He is a multiple BOB winner and Group placer with sizeable wins under Ray Filburn Jr., Michael Dougherty, Susan Badick, Lester Mapes, Pamela Joy Douglas, Joe Gregory, Dr. Hilderman, Patty W. Neale, Ken Miller, Sara Tietjen and, most recently, the AWC Supported Entry Eastern Dog Club under breeder-judge Kathleen Davenport. To top off the year, he has sustained his ranking, owner-handled, in the Top 20. I am truly honored to own a dog of this high quality. He is the foundation for our breeding program and we could only dream of the success that he has had in 2000. Thank you’s go out to Kathy, Pat, Cheryl, and Nancy for being our biggest supporters and fans. Your kind words and encouragement were a godsend. Windsor has made my dreams come true… Owner/Handler: Alice VandenBussche Co-owner: Kathy Armato / de Sud |
