American Whippet Club Bo Bengtson In 1988 the AWC initiated the Register of Merit for influential sires and dams. Upon application, AWC will grant the title “Register of Merit” (ROM, to be used after the dog's registered name) to any Whippet sire whose offspring have earned a minimum of 15 AKC champion and/or ARM titles, and to any Whippet dam whose offspring have earned a minimum of 5 AKC champion and/or ARM titles. Furthermore, the title “Register of Merit - Excellent” (ROM-X) can be granted to any Whippet sire whose offspring have earned a minimum of 25 AKC champion and/or ARM titles, and to any Whippet dam whose offspring have earned a minimum of 10 AKC champion and/or ARM titles. A certificate of merit will be awarded to the owners of sires and dams which qualify for the award, and who have applied for it. The presentation will take place during the AWC National Specialty, with the certificate mailed to those who cannot be present. At the 1991 AWC Annual meeting it was ruled, due to the disproportionate number of brood bitches which had qualified for the ROM title, to increase the requirement from 5 to 7 qualifying titles for their offspring. Other categories remain as before, with the addition that CDX obedience, LCM lure coursing and AKC Field Champion titles also qualify. Please note that a multi-titled offspring can qualify more than once in the different categories!
Register of Merit (ROM) Dams continued

This is a photo of a Whippet, Babs, who belongs to Peg Haese in Wisconsin . Babs suffered from the most common inherited defect in our breed, vitreous degeneration. This condition progressed to total blindness, ending both her show & coursing career. Babs had both eyes removed to relieve the severe pain that accompanies the glaucoma, which occurs secondary to this condition. Babs is one of the very few Whippets that handles blindness well. Most Whippets develop aggressive or very fearful responses to going blind, especially as inherited eye diseases often progress rather quickly to blindness, giving the dog little chance to acclimate to its loss of eyesight. These dogs must usually be euthanatised. Even when they survive, there is something about a blind sighthound that seems particularly sad. Because there seemed to be some confusion about the CERF statistics which I have provided in past years, I have decided to do a simple summary this year. Note that the number of Whippets examined includes ALL Whippets checked by a board certified ophthalmologists not just those applying for a CERF number. I hope this will clear up any uncertainty among the AWC membership.

We believe Call to be the embodiment of what aWhippet should be. She is a maniac in the field, a conformationally correct show bitch (not to mention the soundest thing on four legs!), an excellent bed warmer cind, most importantly of all, our loyal best friend. Cali's breeder, co-owner and occasional handler is the wonderful Cal Perry. As always, you have our deepest thanks. Our California Girl is only a few points shy of her championship title,After this is obtained, we will be looking forward to a spring breeding. Loving homes are invited to inquire.
