1989 American Whippet Club Whippet Annual
Pages 1 through 25

It was a wonderful year at Idover. Our new youngster, "Lillie" (Ch. Bohem American Way x Ch. Whippoorwill Bohem Aria), earned 12 points including both majors her first week out, then went on to finish with a third major - all in just 3 short weeks. "Splash" (Ch. Plumcreek Walk On Water, ROMX x AmCanCh. Dunbcrry Arwen, ROM) presented us with a lovely litter by Ch. Plumcreek Jumaco Austin - two of whom (Tami and Arnie) arc pictured above. After maturnity leave, Splash went on to win Best of Opposite at the AWC Western Specialty, defeating several top-winning Best-in-Show and Best-in-Specialty bitches.
We are most pleased with 1989's splashing events and looking forward to more simply splashing happenings in 1990!

Once in a lifetime a dog comes along and makes himself unforgettable. For me this is BIS CH. WHIPPOORWILL TANZANITE. The cover picture captures a thrill of a lifetime ... an All-Breed Best In Show, owner-handled! This honor was awarded to us July 16, 1988 by Mr. Carl Tuttle at the Catocton K.C. show. Even with the temperature soaring to 104 degrees, ZAN was not to be denied. At 9 1/2 years young, we believe him to the the oldest Whippet to go Best In Show.
ZAN joins his more famous sisters, BIS CH. WHIPPOORWILL DIAMOND and multiple Group and Specialty winning CH. LADY BLAIR OF WHIPPOORWILL, a remarkable Dam.
We are very proud to have 'PINKY' as our foundation at WINSMITH. Our PINKY daughter, CH. WHIPPOORWILL HIGH FLYER began her Veteran's career by winning the very competitive Veteran Bitch Class at the Midwest Specialty in 1989. We are looking forward to having fun with her at the Specialties next year.
We are excited about and expecting great things from our PINKY granddaughters, CH. WHIPPOORWILL UNICORN LADY DAY and CAN. CH. AIKERSKAILL LAUREL OF WINSMITH.

| FROM THE PRESIDENT |
 |
1989 has been a busy year for the AWC, starting with the National Specialty in Dallas. We outdid ourselves again with a total entry of 388. I was honored to judge the Futurity, which drew 145 puppies.
June found the fancy in Pennsylvania at the Eastern Specialty where we had plenty to cheer about as the Whippet went on to BEST IN SHOW!
July in California for the Western Specialty found us at a new site which saw a very nice entry.
August we "did" Ohio and the Midwest weekend, which was enhanced this year by a seminar on Canine Locomotion presented by Bonnie Dalzell. This was held on the "old Futurity day" and was a refreshing break in the competitive weekend. I'm delighted to find the time in conjunction with a Specialty for an educational offering!
Thanks to very hard work by Dr. Charles Billings, the AWC in accordance with the AKC mandate, voted on a Standardization of our Standard, which the AKC approved. This process brought forth some very good dialogue from the membership concerning the Standard and provokes thoughts of a Standards Revision Committee.
I was delighted to make the Southern Specialty weekend this year and partake of that well-known "Southern Hospitality".
I feel the AWC is fortunate to have such well done regional Specialties enabling whippet lovers nationwide to enjoy the excitement of a Specialty weekend.
In December the Club made a donation to the Animal Relief Fund of South Carolina to help with the plight of the many dogs in the area devastated by Hurricane Hugo. We did check about the Earthquake area of California and found that there was not the total destruction of animal facilities as there was in South Carolina.
Ending on a happier note, as the old saying goes - " California or Bust" ! Hope to see you all at the National in April, 1990.

We are proud of Stoney Meadows Brown Betty C.D.X.
and
Congratulate Bert & Beverly Franklin on the marvelous job they have done in training
her to her C.D.X. Obedience Title

and
Training her to perform the Agility tests.

Jessica is obviously a "Rapid" daughter - beautiful front, flowing side movement, wonderful temperament. Her first time in the show ring, she was BOB over Specials from the 6-9 Puppy class under breeder-judge Clifford Thompson. Jessica now lives in Canada, where she will be shown and loved by Yvonne Lawrie of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Her mother's daughter . . .
"Jay" is the image of her of her mother - elegant, beautiful in motion and full of personality. She only made it to the show ring a very few times in '89 (enough to place 2nd in regular and 4th in sweeps at the Midwest Specialty), but will be out and about more in 1990. Watch for this eye-catching little girl in a ring near you soon.

In addition to being First Select Dog in a record entry, "Yeager" was also 4th in a large Stud Dog class, represented by two 6 month old puppies from his first litter. Youngsters from that litter are now pointed and a new litter in California will be seen in the ring this year. We look forward to more great things in his future.

Bah. Ch. Whippletree Hadley, F.Ch., finished her field
championship in 1989 and
reigned as champion house dog. Ch. Whippoorwill Capri, F.Ch., won her field championship in 1989. She stunned us by winning her final points with a Best in Field over top competition,
handled by Larry and Pat Flynn. Paris Miss Martha began her show career in 1989, and is
already pointed. Paris St.
Andrews Duke won Best in Match and 5 Puppy Hound Groups for new owner Kim Simmons. Paris Pauline (not pictured) was major-pointed in 1989 with handler Gale McCullough.
Lulu, Martha, Paris St. Andrews Devon, Steeler and puppy, Abby 1989 was a great year, full of thrills. We look forward to more fun in 1990! |
