You strain at the leash, and your ill—humor at the constant confinement strains at my patience. As the weeks and months drag on, I find myself annoyed at the way white Vetrap glows against your black leg on our sedate walks, an ever—present reminder of what you can no longer do, like all those rosettes, getting dusty on the wall, that I cannot bring myself to take down.

I finally wonder aloud what I haven't wanted to think, "Will it never heal?"

At the familiar word, you turn and look at me and obediently correct your position at my side.

And that nearly breaks my heart.

(CanCh Swiftsure Wishful Thinking, ARM,ORC,AmCanFCh x Padneyhill Moonlight Sonata, FCX,LCM)

Two years ago, when Rosanna went Best In Field, I thought it was the beginning of spectacular things. But while the dogs she beat that day went on to field championships, and then their lure courser of merit titles, Rosanna was entertaining herself by chasing knots in the line ("There's a little bunny--get it! Get it!"), attacking the machine ("Go for the heart!"), outsmarting the lure, and generally either suffering from the "invisible dog syndrome" or making me wish she were invisible. But finally, with what can only be attributed to divine intervention, she put three good trials back—to—back and finished with another Best of Breed, a second and a fourth.

In the overall scheme of dogs in my life, however, her field championship pales in the glow of her other accomplishment for 1986. After studiously watching Dreamer, resident dog genius, open every interior door in the house, Rosanna as well has mastered the "doorknob principle".

"Pluck wins--it always wins! Though days be slow and nights be dark, 'twixt days that come and go--still pluck will win. Its average is sure: He gains the prize who can most endure, who faces issues, he who never shirks, who waits and watches--and who always works."

Author unknown, from the book,

Elbridqe A. Stuart, by James Marshall

Mother's Day, 1986:

"It won't be breathing when I hand it to you," warned Stephanie. "It's up to you to make it live."

I nodded absently. I was thinking about that stillborn black bitch, lying on the cold stainless table at the emergency clinic last night. Thinking about the five males at home by the fire, watched over by Mom. Desperately hoping that this late—night C—section for the last, badly positioned puppy would go smoothly. And that finally I would have my much hoped—for bitch.

"If it's another male, you can send it back," I tried to joke. Cursed with a queasy stomach, I was staring intently at hemostats, sterile towels and syringes, trying not to see Sox, Dreamer's tiny leased sister, trussed up on the table with her insides popping out, trying to remember all the

instructions Stephanie had given me.

"It's a boy," called out Stephanie. "Are you ready?"

Not even time for an answer--she dumped a puddle of yuck into my towel—draped hands.

"Rub!" she ordered.

It seemed to take an eternity for that little nose to turn a soft pink. I rubbed. I shook. I swabbed out his throat. I medicated. I covered his nose and mouth and gently blew air into his anesthetized lungs. And rubbed and rubbed and rubbed, with Stephanie calling out instructions, ducking over to look at him every few minutes. And all the while the old poem pasted on my refrigerator running, singsong, through my head: "Pluck wins!"

The queasiness was long behind me, replaced with a fierce determination. It didn't matter any more that he was the sixth male. This one must live. This one was special.

I can remember, late in the night there at the vet's, gently placing him in the incubator, realizing in that moment that, although I would hope he would be both, it would never matter much in the years to come whether he grew up to be pretty or fast. He's my puppy.

(CanCh Swiftsure Wishful Thinking, ARM,ORC,AmCanFCh x Whynot Sidhe's Soxy Lady, CD)

WITH MANY THANKS TO:

"Saint Phyllis" Larson, my mom, who opened her home and heart to something that became a much larger production than either of us had ever imagined.

Stephanie Hazen, DVM, of the Pet Clinic, Salem, Oregon, for house calls, phone calls, and some pretty snazzy late—night medical practice with Assistant Extraordinaire, Jon Hazen.

Pam Williams, DVM, who was taking her turn at Salem Emergency Vet erinary Clinic, and who delivered puppies and encouraging words with equal enthusiam.

Wyndsor Whippets

PRESENTS WITH PRIDE

COLBY OF WYNDSOR, ARM, ORC

(Trilby x Toro)

MEET WINNER

Colby, at the young age of 20 months, had earned both her ARM and Oval Track Championships. She has the honor of being the top bitch competing in Oval track during 1986. Colby is not only an outstanding racer, but is also a blue ribbon winner in the show ring with competition, thus proving she is truly a dual purpose whippet.

We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to our many friends who own Wyndsor whippets. Because of the love, care, excellent training and campaigning given to our puppies, they have excelled in all fields. To date, we have bred 4 show champions, 23 ARM champions and 12 Oval track champions. It is a record we will be proud of forever. Thank you.
