1983 RACE PERFORMANCE SUMMARY

A record of 47 National Point Race (NPR) meets were conducted in the United States and Canada in 1983. The total number of meets increased from 43 to 47, however, the average entry declined from 42 to 39 adults compared to the previous year.

Last year the Jean and Vince Balint litter of Epinard Shelby of Wyndsor, C.D., ARM, PCC, F.Ch. x Regalstock Vampire produced a record six ARM winners. This year, the Balint's litter of Van Oorschot's Toro, ARM x Volant Trilby of Wyndsor, ARM produced four NPR winners: Trylson of Wyndsor, ARM, Dynasty of Wyndsor, ARM, Texas Contender of Wyndsor, ARM and Windward Blue of Wyndsor (deceased). Four of this year's top ten racers are Balint-bred Whippets, including national champion, Trylson.

Another litter worthy of mention is the Regalstock Panama Red, ARM x Sailaway Dream Weaver, C.D., F.Ch. litter bred by Bill Turpin, Jr. which produced three ARM winners in 1983: Buffalo Nickel of Course, ARM, Canadian Nickel of Course, ARM and Flash Fire of Course, ARM.

The "super pup" of 1983 was Lyth Satus who, at the age of nine months, defeated top Grade A dogs at the October Washougal NPR, earning 4 ARM points. He also earned 6 ARM points at the December Orange NPR at the age of eleven months. Should be a strong factor in 1984.

A total of 19 Whippets won NPRs in 1983 with NPR win honors going to Janie's John-Boy da Toro, ARM for the second straight year.

The standard ARM point scale was applied to arrive at "national point" assignment and overall national rankings for 1983.

John-Boy, Butterscotch and Toast to Toro are repeaters from last year. 1981-82 national champ, Cimarron, appears in the top ten for the fourth straight year.

Van Oorschot's Toro, ARM is the sire of seven of the top ten; Epinard Sadalia and Volant Trilby of Wyndsor, ARM are the dams of three each of the top ten.

Although not appearing in the top ten, the top-ranked dual-purpose Whippet for 1983 was Can.Ch. Swiftsure Wishful Thinking, ARM, F.Ch. bred and owned by Steve and Linda Buchholz of British Columbia. "Mikey" won the June Calgary NPR and gave an impressive performance at the August double-header in British Columbia.

Following is a brief description of the top ten race Whippets for 1983.

TRYLSON OF WYNDSOR, ARM (Van Oorschot's Toro, ARM x Volant Trilby of Wyndsor, ARM) bred by Vince and Jean Balint of California and owned by David Pratt of Washington; a massive and powerful two-year old white and red brindle male; winner of seven NPRs in 1983, competing against top California, Northwest, Midwest and East Coast competition; overcame broken foot as a puppy to become #1 racer; has excellent finish needed to overcome late starts; already ranked 20th on all-time national point standings.

JANIE'S JOHN-BOY DA TORO, ARM (Van Oorschot's Toro, ARM x Epinard Sadalia) bred by Richard Leithner of Texas and owned by Tom Yeager of Ohio. "Jon" is a three-year old, solid brindle male, who, despite a mid-season slump, posted eight NPR victories in 1983; competed in Midwest , Texas, East and West Coast and Canada, winning the prestigious Santa Barbara NPR for the second straight year; now ranked eighth on all-time national point standings.

REGALSTOCK CIMARRON DEL TORO, ARM, ORC (Van Oorschot's Toro, ARM x Topper's Wistful of Regalstock) bred by David and Annette Rosenstock and owned by Jo Gore of California; a four year old red brindle and white male, "Cimmey" won four NPRs in 1983 and appears in the top ten for the fourth consecutive year; the 1981 and 1982 national champ is ranked fourth on the all-time national point standings; has now won 27 NPRs, second only to his legendary sire, Toro (who won 33 NPRs).

COCKEYMOOR GEENEE, ARM (Cockeymoor Flyer x Besap's Rocket) bred in England and owned by Tony & Helena James of British Columbia; "Geenee" is a 20" black bitch who was the top race bitch for 1983, winning six NPRs against top level competition; could move up in standings if campaigned more in 1984.

GYPSY'S BUTTERSCOTCH EL TORO, ARM (Van Oorschot's Toro, ARM x Epinard Sadalia) bred by Richard Leithner and owned by Karen Johnston of Texas, "Scotch" is a three-year old solid brindle male who won six straight NPRs in 1983 and is now rated 19th on the all-time national point standings; raced only seven times in 1983; could move up with more racing in 1984.

BUFFALO NICKEL OF COURSE, ARM (Regalstock Panama Red, ARM x Sailaway Dream Weaver, C.D., F.Ch.) bred by Bill Turpin, Jr. of British Columbia and co-owned by Bruce and John Nickel of Wisconsin; "Hawkeye" is an orange brindle and white two-year old male who won three NPRs in 1983, competing in Midwest, Texas, Canada and East Coast; late season injury prevented higher rating.

QUANTAS OF WYNDSOR, ARM, ORC (Epinard Shelby of Wyndsor, C.D., ARM, PCC, F.Ch. x Regalstock Vampire) bred by Vince and Jean Balint and co-owned by Ken Lee of California; a powerful three-year old male; consistently performed to advantage in 1983, winning three NPRs in tough California competition; the top oval racer for 1983 and one of six littermates to earn ARM certificate.

LYTH DJON, ARM (Malbon Red Cent x Chinnor Hot Gossip) bred by C.A. Lewis and owned by Tony & Karen Lewis of Washington; "Jon" is a 19" red fawn male who is the smallest Whippet in this year's top ten. This impressive one-year old won two NPRs in 1983. "Has early speed over the first 150 yards" according to his owner; competed in few race meets in 1983, his owner hopes to campaign him more in 1984.

RIDGE RUNNER'S TOAST TO TORO, ARM (Van Oorschot's Toro, ARM x Epinard Sadalia) bred by Richard Leithner of Texas and owned by Bill and Jean Carter

of Missouri. "Augie" is a solid brindle three-year old male; littermate to John-Boy and Butterscotch; had an off year in 1983, failing to win an NPR.

DYNASTY OF WYNDSOR, ARM (Van Oorschot's Toro, ARM x Volant Trilby of Wyndsor, ARM) bred and owned by Vince and Jean Balint of California. "Dyna" is a white with fawn two-year old bitch; littermate to National champ, Trylson; 2nd ranked race bitch of 1983; winner of two NPRs over strong California competition.

TEXAS CONTENDER OF WYNDSOR, ARM (Van Oorschot's Toro, ARM x Volant Trilby of Wyndsor, ARM) bred by Vince and Jean Balint and owned by Barbara Koch of Texas . "Ruggie" is an orange brindle and white two-year old littermate to Trylson and Dynasty; winner of tough October Hamilton NPR over 18 ARMs; shows excellent early speed.
