British Columbia Whippet Racing Club - Annual Report - 1982
The past season has been a most active one for members of the B.C.W.R.C. with more race meets to attend than ever before. In addition, many members were busy in the show ring and putting on a series of race demonstrations in various areas around greater Vancouver.
Our N.P.R. meet winners were as follows: in June Penny Wilmot's Wilpen Sherman of Wyndsor A.R.M. was High Score with Best Opposite going to the Lewis-Stigum entry Lyth Domino ARM; In August Tom and Cathy Yeager travelled from Ohio to take High Score with their Janie's John Boy da Toro ARM with Janet Stigum's Hoogle De Goog ARM went Best Opposite; and in September the Lewis-Stigum owned Lyth Jasper ARM was High Score while his litter sister, Lyth Domino ARM was running strongly to take Best Opposite.
Other racing highlights saw Wilpen Sherman of Wyndsor ARM and Bill Turpin Jr's Fickle Finger of Course each winning a N.O.T.R.A. race meet. When the season was completed final racing statistics showed Penny Wilmot's Sherman was the High Score Average race whippet in the Pacific Northwest and also the Number One Whippet under the N.P.R. Scoring system. An unfortunate early-season injury prevented Sherman from showing his true form in the national rankings for the year.
As usual, many club members were active in the show ring with particular success at the Western Gazehound Club's Annual Specialty Show. John Shelton, in judging this year's event, selected Carol Philpott's Alcyon All That Jazz as Winners Dog and Jamie Bannerman's seven month old pup, Sailaway Lady Alexis, as Winners Bitch, Best of Winners and Best Opposite Sex.
The members of the B.C.W.R.C. look forward to the forthcoming season and extend an invitation to whippet owners in other areas to att e nd our race meets and enjoy our hospitality.
Respectfully submitted,
Bill Turpin, President

Tanner now has four All-Breed High-in-Trials with scores of 198 1/2, 198 1/2, 199 and 1992 from both the Novice and Open classes. He was Best of Breed and First in Open A on the same day for the second and third legs on his C.D.X. Shown in obedience only one month out of 1981, he was ranked third in the Hound Group(Delany System) and should be very near (if not in) the top position for 1982. Look for Tanner in the Utility ring in 1983.
Many thanks to Susan Strickland, our obedience instructor, for her expert guidance and to Mr. and Mrs. James E. Butt for providing me with both Tanner and Jo, two very special whippets.
Tanner and I both owe special thanks to our pal, O.T.Ch. Sporting Fields Mad Hatter, U.D., for the many lessons learned during his career.

The Columbia Whippet Club, Inc. was formed in 1981 by a group of people in the Portland, Oregon area. Our goal is to unite people from a wide variety of Whippet interests in promoting our breed. Showing, racing, breeding, lure coursing, obedience, tracking--our members are interested in all these activities.
We got rolling with a booth at the December 1981 bench show and moved on to a specialty fun match in February 1982 with an entry of 27 dogs in conformation and 3 in obedience. Best Adult was awarded to Sebisha's Apollo, Best Puppy was Shogun. High scoring obedience went to Snowynde Bridleveil.
June 5, 1982 we held our sweepstakes, with Pearl Baumgartner from White Acre= Whippets as judge. Top honors went to Briarwyke's Freedom. The next day our activities at the support show, including a luncheon for Whippet exhibitors complete with rain, provided a gratifying afternoon in spite of the intermittent showers as a member of our favorite breed went Best in Show.
Now we're busy with plans for our first specialty fun run, to be held in January 1983, our second specialty fun match in February 1983, and our big project: an annual futurity.
Our first futurity is expected to be held July 15, 1983. Dams are nominated before whelping for a fee of $5.00. Puppies are kept eligible by two renewals, with a $2.00 fee at 3 months and a $3.00 fee at 5 months of age. Classes will be for dogs and for bitches, 6-9 months, 9-12 months, and 12-18 months. (Our futurity chairman is Debra Janes Blake, 3085 NE Third, Gresham, Oregon 97030.)
