Ch. Westgate the Enchantress...

one of the top dams of the breed . .

(Ch. Pathen's Shaitan of Carrob x Pennyworth At Odds)

WINNER OF THE BROOD BITCH CLASS AT THE 1982 AWC MID-WEST SPECIALTY

Our BIS winner "Amy" was retired from the ring at 3 years of age and from the whelping box at age 9. She produced 4 l itters by 4 different sires, a total of 18 puppies:

by Ch. Alpine Ski Bum - 4 puppies whelped, 3 Chs. finished.

by Ch. Misty Moor's s Chalmondoley - 5 puppies whelped (2 deceased), 2 Chs. finished.

by Ch. Humble Acre Williemakit - 4 puppies whelped, 3 Ch. finished.

by Ch. Stoney Meadows North Star - 5 puppies whelped, 3 Chs. finished.

The number of Chs. (11 total) and especially the PERCENTAGE of Chs. Amy has produced is testament to her prepotency. We are indeed proud of her accomplishments. However, we value her companionship more than any further honor she might

us, or records that she might break. Therefore, she is retired. She rem ains at home, our number 1 couch warmer, meal moocher and squirrel patrol.

On the following page, we pre sent the two bitches with whom we hope to continue.

A litter sister to Ch. Shamasan Bugs Bunny, "Minnie" totally feminine,
elegant and shapely. Her first litter will be by the outstanding producer Ch. Hound Hill Battleboro, CD.

Ch. Stoney Meadows Topaz

( Ch. Stoney Meadows North Star x Ch. Stoney Meadows Bright Side)

Topaz is a sound "old-fashion" whippet bitch who teems with breed type. We thank MA) s. W. P. Wear for allowing us to have her, and are excited about her potential in the whelping box. She will be co-owned with Mrs. Mary Beth Arthur for her first litter and will be bred to Am.Can.Ch. Marial's King Arthur, Am.Can.CD, or one of his sons.

NATIONAL RACE SECRETARY'S ANNUAL REPORT - ROBERT T. THEISS

The year 1932 has been one of our best racing years to date. Racing has united with showing through mutual cooperation to produce some very special events. I would specifically like to mention the Eastern-Midwest Specialty held in Cecilton, Maryland ; a great event. My compliments to all who worked so hard to make this event a great success.

The number of race entries for 1982 increased to 1,816 for forty-three meets, or an average of 42.4 dogs per meet. This is an increase of five entries per meet over 1981. The number for 1980 - 1,632 entries for forty-two meets. In 1981 we had 1,648 entries for forty-four meets. Along with these increased numbers we have had twenty-five meets out of forty-three where no fouls were called.

There have been two great litters racing this year that deserve special mention. One of the litters was bred by Jean Balint in California and the other was bred by Richard Leithner of Texas. The Balint litter has completed six ARM awards while the Leithner litter has completed five ARM awards to date. Janie's John Boy da Toro, owned by the Yaegers of Ohio, set a midwest record of winning eight consecutive race meets. John Boy and Ridge Runner Toast of Toro, owned by the Carters of St Louis, completed their ARM's at the same meet held in Wisconsin.

On a sad note, we in racing have lost three very fine race dogs who will be sorely missed on the track in seasons to come. Our condolences to the LeClair family in the loss of Rialcel's Big Rig from Toro (Trucker), to the Eaker family for the loss of W.R.'s Pistolero (Skeeter) and to the Petty's of St Louis in the death of Epinard Dallas (Rosebud). To lose racers of this fine quality is most difficult even though all were accidental and not in any way connected with racing. We are extremely pleased, however, that all of these families will con tinue to be a part of racing.

If you find any errors in any of the lists, please write me so that we can correct our records. This includes the spelling of names, owners, states or any question on total points earned.

The N.P.R. Rules Committee is in the process of reviewing all comments and suggestions for changes in our rules. Any changes or corrections made in the rules will be reported in the Whippet News during the early part of 1983.

The National Race Secretary will continue to send the complete race results to each club in the U.S. and Canada. If anybody would like to have them sent to them direct, it will cost $12.00 per year. Just send your name and address with your check to Robert T. Theiss, National Race Secretary, 115 Chatwood Terrace, St Louis 63126.

I would like to wish all of the people involved in racing a Happy and Successful Year in 1983.

Sincerely,

Robert T. Theiss

Washington Whippet Racing Club

W.W.R.C. have had a very successful and exciting 1982 Racing Season. The season commenced with our official oval practice held on Multnomah Kennel Club's Greyhound Schooling Track. The eventual winner was the Wiltse's Whimsey's Roving Reginald. June 5th saw our first N.P.R. of the season successfully completed with a win for the diminutive Lyth Domino A.R.M. owned by Lewis/Stigum.

The Management of Multnomah Kennel Club were so impressed with the keeness and standard of racing of the W.W.R.C. whippets that they invited nine dogs to compete in an exhibition race between the regular Greyhound races on Saturday evening, July 10th. This took place under floodlights, the racers running per fectly like true professionals. The crowd were delighted with the antics of the racers during the pre-race parade, so different from the normal placid parade of the Greyhounds. The dogs were led by the normal Greyhound lead-out boys whose discomforture entertained the crowd. The race was won by Janet Stigum's Hoogle -De-Goog. The race was closely contested by Lyth Jasper, a 'photo' being called for before the race result was declared. The only disappointment for the crowd was that no parimutual wagering was allowed on this track. M.K.C. were so pleas by the crowd reaction that they scheduled three more races on successive mid-wee evenings when crowd attendance had been falling off. These were eventually run and on each occasion attendance was considerably up. Hoogle-De-Goog proved to be unbeatable on the "Big Track" and took all three races much to the delight of her, by now, numerous fans. M.K.C. are in the process of building a new $350,000 training track which W.W.R.C. are hopeful of using for their 1983 N.O.T.R.A. Meets.

Aug. 14th saw the first day of our first Double Header with the winner in Jo Gore's Great racer, Cimarron. Aug. 15th was the day for our first approved Oval Track meet, the winner being Hoogle-De-Goog with Whimsey's Roving Reginald finishing with the same number of points.

Sept 11th W.W.R.C. members once again put on exhibition races at Klickitat County Fair, Goldendale, WA which proved to be as popular as ever with the crowd, with the winner in David Pratt's puppy "Trylson of Wyndsor". This event earned W.W.R.C. a handsome donation of $250 from an appreciative Fair Board.

Our racing season drew to a close with our second Double Header, Oct 2nd being our N.P.R. won by "Super Cimarron". Oct 3rd N.O.T.R.A. where Roving Reginald had his revenge on Hoogle-De-Goog, Reggie finishing first with Hoogie second. This event was run at a private greyhound track owned by the Causey family of Ridgefield, WA . The Causeys have now acquired a whippet puppy and are firmly hooked on whippet racing. If their success with greyhounds is anything to go by we will be seeing much more of them.

Special thanks to the Wiltse, Chambers and Graham familys who graciously opened their homes to us for our now traditional after race parties.

Club dogs who ran particularly well this season were Hoogle-De-Goog ARM, gained ARM and 8 ORC points. Whimsey's Roving Reginald, 9 ORC points. Knox Knoll Kampari, 8 ARM points. Regalstock Wildwoods Lobo ORC and ARM points. Lyth Domino ARM never out of the top ten. Lyth Jasper ARM, F.Ch, ORC points. Puppy Trylson of Wyndsor won two N.P.R puppy events. A very special mention to all the constant "C" and "D" dogs without whose participation there would be no "A.R.M.'s", they are the backbone of whippet racing.

Another full racing season is planned for 1983. Our provisional race dates are N.P.R. - May 21st, June 25th, August 13th & Oct. 1st.

N.O.T.R.A. April 9th, May 22nd, Aug. 14th, & Oct. 2nd.

Plan on joining us in '83. You are assured of a warm welcome.

"Peter" was chosen to be ourf amily pet and soon involved us with the versatile whippet. accomplishment was in obedience when, in the fall of 1979, he completed both his American and Canadian CD's, each in three consecutive trials.

Starting his national point race career in 1980, Peter proved his great heart and ability in Burlington, IA, where he won three ARM points as a five year old; leaving racing to the younger dogs, Peter went on to coursing, completing his field championship in four consecutive trials, including two Best of Breeds.

At 6 1/2 years of age, his desire to compete returns Peter to the obedience r ing where we look forward to his CDX and UD! we took

Peter is the first of our three whippets. His honest desire and willingness not only to please, but give 150% have made him our very special whippet and endeared the breed to us.

NATIONAL OVAL TRACK RACING ASSOCIATION (NOTRA) licensed racing continued to show growth in 1982 in the number of meets and in entries per meet. There were 17 Official Meets plus 2 Practice meets hosted by 9 different clubs in the U.S. and Canada. There were over 700 starters with an average of 39 starters at Official Meets. The largest entry was at Santa Barbara, California where 60 starters contested the event. That meet, dubbed 'The California Whippet Derby , was hosted by the combined Whippet Clubs of California. Ten Official Meets were run over a distance of 350 meters (383 yards) on drag-lure tracks set up on grass athletic fields for the event. Three meets were at 220 meters (242 yards) on a 'U' shaped drag-lure track, and 4 meets were on a rail-lure track at distances from 300 to 385 yards.

The racing was highly competitive at all the meets, and the ability of the Whippets on the ovals c ontinues to amaze all. Times have improved so that a winner on the 350 meter drag-lure track must get around in about 24.0 seconds. The best time achieved to date is 23.4 seconds.

Nine different Whippets won meets this year, and 6 Whippets earned their ORC (Oval Racing Champion s hip). A total of 8 Whippets have earned an ORC to date. Twenty Whippets earned points towards an ORC this year. The competition among the top racers was hot and heavy all year. Sue Morris' FLYAWAY DELISA'S DELIGHT, ARM, ORC repeats as the OVAL RACING NATIONAL CHAMPION. Her record was 6 wins, 3 seconds, and 2 thirds in 11 starts. JANDALL'S FORMULA ONE, ARM, ORC, owned by Randall Robbins, gave her a real battle for the top spot and finished the year as the runner-up to the N ATIONAL CHAMPION.

I does not seem possible that a year has passed since I wrote my last report for the "Whippet Annual". I guess the old saying is true, "Time goes fast when you're having fun". Fun is definitely an important factor with the NCWC. This organization has established quite a reputation for promoting good will, fun and enjoyment. It is indeed an honor to be President of such an outstanding club.

The NCWC dogs have had another successful year. At our recent awards banquet, 14 new champions were honored. Every category was covered; show, obedience, open-field coursing, lure-coursing, National Point racing and oval track. This certainly shows the versatility of both the members and their dogs.

Cimarron, owned by Jo Gore, was again the National Racing Champion. (This outstanding racer won the championship in 1981 also.) He also made his debut on the oval track and certainly looks like a top contender for 1983.

Oval Track was again dominated by Delisa's Delight. She won the National Championship for the second consecutive year. In addition, she was the 1982 top racing bitch in National Point competition.

The Fourth of July weekend again proved to be our most successful event. Record entries were received in all three events. Hank Speight, who judged Whippets at our fun-match, did a superb job. It was most apparent that everyone had a good time.

In closing, I wish all Whippet fanciers and friends a year of love, peace and joy.

JEAN BALINT
NCWC PRESIDENT
