A special thanks to Heather and Everett Dansereau of Devonair Whippets for this great historical piece.

CENTRAL CALIFORNIA RACING CLUB

Organized in the fall of 1981, the CCRC held its first NOTRA licensed oval track meet on November 11 at Donnie Work's Greyhound traing track, Modesto, California. Despite a very muddy track, the racing was great with the eventual winner being Flyaway Delisa's Delight ARM ORC.

1982 saw the CCRC host two very successful oval meets in Modesto . Both meets were well attended, with entries from as far away as Oregon, Washington and many from southern California . Winner of our March meet, again on a very muddy track was Regalstock Caesar ARM. Winner of our November meet was his littermate Regalstock Cimarron Del Toro ARM.

We greatly appreciated the support we received from everyone, but special thanks have to go to the members of the Northern California Whippet Club who have gone out of their way to help in official capacities and loan us their scoreboard and racing jackets.

1983 plans include at least two oval meets in Modesto and thanks to the generousity of the Great Western Whippet Association who donated their old starting boxes to us, we plan to hold an official National Point Race and the qualifying practice meet, if suitable grounds can be found.

We look forward to a great year in 83' and hope that everyone who attends will have as great a time as we did this season.

1982 WHIPPET RACE PERFORMANCE SUMMARY

by Doug Arthur

A total of 43 National Point Race (NPR) meets were conducted in the United States and Canada during 1982, tying the record set in 1981. There were 1820 adult starters at the 43 NPRs, averaging 42 adults per NPR compared to 37 adults per NPR in 1981.

The growing popularity of Whippet racing in this country is best illustrated by comparing the annual number of NPRs over the years:

1982 marked the emergence of several outstanding litters of Whippet racers, the most noteworthy being that bred by Richard Leithner of Texas. Five pups from his Van Oorshot's Toro, ARM ex Epinard Sadalia litter have now finished their ARM, won at least one NPR and placed in the top ten nationally: Ria I cel 's Big Rig to Toro, ARM (deceased), Janie's John-Boy da Toro, ARM, Ridge Runner's Toast to Toro, ARM, Gypsy's Butterscotch el Toro, ARM and Luke's Jay-Jess of Toro, ARM. This litter could influence the direction of breeding programs and pedigrees for many years to come.

During 1982 a total of fifteen Whippets won race meets:

*new record

Cimarron appears in the top ten for the third straight year. Del isa 's Del ight, CI ipper Gandolf and Dandi Duke are repeaters from 1981 and Formula One appeared on the 1980 top ten.

Van Oorshot 's Toro, ARM is the sire of seven of the top ten. Epinard Sadal ia is the dam of four and Topper's Wistful of Regal stock is also the dam of four of the top ten.

A brief description of each of these fine race dogs follows:

REGALSTOCK C I MARRON DEL TORO, ARM (Van Oorshot's Toro, ARM ex Topper's Wistful of Regalstock) bred by Dave and Annette Rosenstock and owned by Jo Gore of California. "Cimmey" is the #1 race Whippet for the 2nd straight year and moves into 4th place on the all-time race ratings. This 22 1/4" 3-year old red-brindle and white parti-color male overcame another toe in jury to post nine NPR wins in '82, including the East Coast Special ty NPR in Cecilton, Maryland . His total of 56 national points in one year is a new record. Should repeat as top dog in ' 83 and has a good chance to be #1 of al I-time if heal thy.

FLYAWAY DEL I SA'S DELIGHT, ARM, ORC (Epinard Shelby of Wyndsor, C.D., ARM ex Critter of Destiny) bred by Stacy Kinkade and owned by Susan Morris of Cal ifornia. "Corky" is a 21" 4-year old white and fawn bitch who is #2 rated racer for the second straight year and has been the top race bitch the past two years. Had it not been for head-to-head competition with Cimarron, "Corky" would have posted 10 NPR victories in ' 82, rather than 6. She is now ranked 7th on the all-time race ratings.

JANIE'S JOHN-BOY DA TORO, ARM (Van Oorshot 's Toro, ARM ex Epinard Sadal ia) bred by Richard Lei thner of Texas and owned by Tom and Cathy Yeager of Ohio. John-Boy is a 2-year old, solid red-brindle male, who posted an impressive record during '82, winning 8 straight NPRs, including Santa Barbara held in conjunction with the AWC Western Specialty. This is the 4th best winning streak on record, behind Jandal I 's Formula One, ARM, who won 9 in a row in '80; Volant Big Red Machine, ARM who won 12 in a row in '74-'75 and Van Oorshot's Toro, ARM who won 20 in a row in '74-'78. John-Boy is the top ranked Midwest racer for '82.

RIDGE RUNNER'S TOAST TO TORO, ARM (Van Oorshots Toro, ARM ex Epinard Sadalia) bred by Richard Lei thner of Texas and owned by Bill and Jean Carter of Missouri. "Augie" is a speedy 2-year old 22" solid red-brindle male who tends to get stronger as a race meet progresses. He posted 4 NPR victories during 1982 and should improve in '83.

REGALSTOCK URBAN COWBOY, ARM (Van Oorshots Toro, ARM ex Toppers Wist ful of Regal stock ) bred by David and Annette Rosenstock of California and owned by Richard Koch of Texas. "Cowboy" is a 22" strong 2-year old white and blue brindle male who should move up in the ratings if he can improve his box-breaking in '83.

GYPSY'S BUTTERSCOTCH EL TORO, ARM (Van Oorshots Toro, ARM ex Epinard Sadalia) bred by Richard Lei thner of Texas and owned by Karen Johnston of Texas. "Scotch" is a 22" 2-year old solid red-brindle male who consistently places among the top finishers in tough Midwest and Texas competition.

JANDALL'S FORMULA ONE, ARM (Toppers Zoro, ARM ex I'm True Tone for Jandal I ) bred and owned by Randall Robbins of California. "Jumbo" was the top-ranked racer of 1980 and is presently 8th on the all-time race ratings. This 22" four-year old solid blue-brindle male is still a threat to win any NPR he enters.

CLIPPER GANDOLF OF WYNDSOR, ARM (Epinard Shelby of Wyndsor, C.D., ARM ex Toppers Wistful of Regal stock ) bred by Vince and Jean Bal int and owned by Darryl and Joyce Sherman of California . "Clipper" is a 22 1/4" 4-year old fawn and white part i-color male who continues to place high among the very best Cal ifornia competition .

CH. SLADE'S DIXIELAND DAND I DUKE, ARM (Am/Can Ch. Mari al s King Arthur, Am/Can C.D. ex Slades Edie Ann 0 'Lazebrook, ARM) bred and owned by David and Nancy Henry and Anthony Guti I la of Ohio. "Duke" is the top rated dual-purpose Whippet for the second straight year. This 21 3/4" red and white 3-year old male continues to compete favorably on both the race track and show ring.

LUKE'S JAY-JESS OF TORO, ARM (Van Oorshots Toro, ARM ex Epinard Sadal ia) bred by Richard Leithner of Texas and co-owned with Jeff and Kathy Luki tsch of Wisconsin. "Ki" is a 21 1/4" solid red-brindle male. Although the smal lest male from a truly exceptional I itter, this 2-year olds intensity and desire consistently keeps him in the top ten at NPRs in which he is entered.

REGALSTOCK RUBIN SUNDANCE, ARM (Van Oorshot' s Toro, ARM ex Toppers Wistful of Regalstock ) bred by David and Annette Rosenstock of California and owned by Chris Blake of Maryland. Rubin is a 22 1 /4" strong white and red- brindle I ittermate to Regal stock s Urban Cowboy, ARM and is the top ranked East Coast racer for 1982. This impressive 2-year old should move up in '83.

ATLANTIC WHIPPET ASSOCIATION

1982 proved to be a very successful year for our Social Club

Again this year, the A.W.A. hosted the Supported Entry at the Farmington Valley Kennel Club Show on July 10th. The turnout and entries were Fantastic! We had the third Largest entry at the show, with 86 dogs! The weather was super, the luncheon was delicious, and everyone oohed and aahhed over our Trophies. At the show we raffled off a Basket of Cheer, won by Bob Goldstein, and an Airline Crate, won by our Sweepstakes Judge, Phoebe Jordan Booth.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members and friends for their continued support and generosity, for without you, none of this would be possible. We would also like to thank the Farm ington Valley Kennel Club for their cooperation and their terriffic committee people. They make our job so much easier.

On to the Eastern Specialty . . . There are no words to describe the efforts put forth by Cora Miller and Mr and Mrs Wear!

Again the weather was great, the grounds were lovely, and the hospitality was unmatched. I know that everyone there, including myself, had a wonderful time. Bravo! . . . to all those who made it a memorable Specialty, especially to Cora and the Wears.

Now for 1983; we are planning to hold another Sweepstakes at Farmington , and our Judge will be Mr Robert Boxma. Our Breed Judge will be Mr Max Magder, both of Canada. Also under consideration is a Fun Match for the Spring of 1983. Possibly we will hold this along with an Eastern

Whippet Association N.P.R. Meet. Look for flyers on this event in your mail boxes, and be sure to bring out all of those puppies.

In closing, we would like to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season and much luck and success in the New Year. We hope you will plan to come to our activities in 1983, and we promise to delight your palate with our culinary feasts, and to do our best to see that

you all have a good time.

Respectfully,

Linda A. Fontana, Secretary
