TRAIL GUIDE IN MEMORIUM
SAN FRANCISCO FRISCO CD, CC, F.CH.
(AKC & ARM Pointed) (1968 - 1977)
The first sighthound in the nation to hold titles and/or points in every field of competition.
A true competitor in every sense, he put his heart and soul into everything he attempted. Above all, his love and close devotion was unmatched, whether it was as our constant companion or as our steadfast guardian.
Thanks to Betty Blalock for letting us own this, one of the first Haitu Hounds. We will miss him dearly.

MIDWEST RACING COORDINATOR ANNUAL REPORT - 1977
The Greater St. Louis Whippet Club, the Midwest Coursing Club and the Tri-State Whippet Association together produced eight race meets during the racing season just past, starting with May 5, 1977 and ending November 5, 1977. We tried to space the meets as evenly as possible, although the first four meets were only two weeks apart. However, the remaining four were spread from three to four weeks apart, making it easier on both the owners and the dogs.
The year saw approximately 150 adult Whippets and 65 puppies produce a total of 424 adult entries and 1O3 puppy entries. Limit races were run as a separate class when there were 8 or more entries and the local club putting on the meet chose to do so. In other instances, the limit dogs were included in the regular ARM adult races. We also had from 4 to 6 veterans running at each race meet, as shown on Chart #1.
We have seen a definite increase in new members in each of the three clubs, but this has been especially true in the St. Louis area. In 1976 we saw the addition of the East Coast Club members attending our meets and this year they were able to have two of their own meets while still continuing to support our midwestern meets. The newest addition to our racing family is the North Texas Whippet Club. They produced three meets this year in their own area which drew midwestern support and we also drew support from their membership to our meets. This is a young and very active club with great enthusiasm 'and a growing list of members.
The year of 1977 has seen some changes in the overall top ten racing Whippets. Since Volant Big Red Machine ARM and Knight Kap O'Lazebrook ARM did not compete at all of the meets we found a change in the top dogs in total points earned. As you can see, eight of the top ten are ARM winners, an increase of three over the 1976 totals, as shown in Chart #2.
This is a very select group, to say the least. Any person whose Whippet's name appears on this list can feel great pride in their racer. There have been ten ARM Certificates earned so far this year and five are from the midwest area. Four of the others are from the California area and one from British Columbia. This in itself speaks very highly of the breeding and training throughout the midwest area. In an effort to get a clear view of the top ten racers we compiled the average total points earned by those dogs that were in the top ten at each of the meets run this year. We counted only those racers that ran in at least half (4) or more of the midwestern meets. The results are shown in Chart #3.
As you compare the two charts you find what may have been expected. The top three racers are the same: Volant Big Red Machine ARM, Knight Kap O'Lazebrook ARM and Volant Buckeye Express ARM, although not necessarily in that order. There are also six of the 1976 top ten racers that appear again in the 1977 charts. It should also be noted that there are eight of the top ten racers appearing in both charts this year and these same eight Whippets have their ARM awards. If compared to 1976, for the same category you find only six racers appearing on both charts and having their ARM awards. This, I believe, shows the dominance and uniformity of quality in this fine group of racers. We must all agree it will be a long time before we will see another exceptional racer like Volant Big Red Machine ARM dominate for a period of five years, or maybe more, our midwestern racing scene.
In looking to the future, in the 1978 racing season we will continue to see many of the racers we have watched for the past two years, but I expect to see a change in their order. There is, of course, always the possibility of "that young upstart" that will be working it's way into this select group, providing new competition and excitement.
Your Midwest Regional Face Coordinator and a representative from each of the racing clubs within the area are now working on the calendar for the 1978 racing season. This calendar will include ten meets instead of the usual eight and we will try to space the meets to allow as much time as possible between events. Also, we will again have a Puppy Futurity as we did in 1977. The location of this event will change from one midwest club to another as will the time of year. The location, club sponsoring and date of the event will be published in the 1978 calendar of events.
In the past year we have tried whenever feasible to standardize equipment in an effort to make each race as fair as possible for the dogs participating. We have agreements on equipment and closing date procedures. This has been a great help in organizing our meets. We will strive to improve other phases of the racing operation in the use of the "Jack-O-Lure." I might personally comment that we feel we have not seen anything affect and improve the intensity of interest, enthusiasm and "being on the lure" as this device does, especially for puppies and young dogs.
For myself, I would like to thank all of you who attended the race meets this past season for your help both on and off the track. This has been a good year and we look forward to a better one in 1978. Again, I would like to extend congratulations to Volant Big Red Machine ARM, Knight Kap O'Lazebrook ARM and Volant Buckeye Express ARM for their repeat performances. Their owners have great reason to be proud of their accomplishments. Congratulations are also in order for the new ARM winners of 1977. You are now members of a very exclusive group. And last, but certainly not least, to all of those racers who "keep on trying for that big win." May I say to each of you, "Better Luck Next Year."
