I first met Gene Jacobs in 1972, shortly after his wife Sybil passed away. I was looking for a greyhound and had been referred to him. We became friends quickly and spent thousands of hours on the phone and on the road traveling to various dog events. During these conversations, he taught me many things about the history of Whippets, form and function, and general dog philosophy (much of which is great life philosophy!)
Gene with thier first whippet, "Phil" in the late 1940's Gene and Sybil got their first Whippet, a monorchid named “Phil”, in the mid to-late 1940’s. I don’t remember who his breeder was, but in those days, you could legally show and breed a monorchid dog. They also had standard Poodles (hence the kennel name “Whipoo”, a common practice at the time,) and Sybil had wire Fox Terriers. He had a series of dogs over the years, including smooth Dachshunds, Greyhounds, a Pug, a couple of Deerhounds, several Smooth Fox Terriers and, most recently, a Jack Russell Terrier puppy, which he gave to me when he passed away. His great loves were the Whippets and the Greyhounds, though – he loved to see the anatomy, and to watch the dogs run. He admired the gutsy personality of the Whippet as much as he liked the sweetness of the Greyhound and the Deerhound.

Gene with his greyhound bitch Ch. Windholme Whipoo's Zelda Gene used to tell stories of his early days in the breed and their association with other new breeders. He and Sybil would get together with Ralph and Barbara Eyles, Barbara and Josephine Steinberg, and other relative “newbies”. They would have practice dog shows and critique the dogs, looking for both positive and negative traits in the Whippets they studied. He sometimes lamented the fact that it seemed that newer folks in Whippets didn’t seem to have any interest in hands-on learning or mentoring by long time breeders. He loved to tell his “Shearer stories”, funny tales about Miss Judith & Miss Julia Shearer, the Meander kennels, Doris & Potter Wear, the Stoney Meadows kennels, and especially amusing stories about the early “characters” in sighthounds. Although I heard those stories many times, they never failed to tickle me, especially as Gene was always amused by them, too! One story I especially loved concerned a well-known greyhound breeder. This unique European lady was at a specialty out East and was in the ring with one of her dogs. Miss Julia was judging Whippets in the next ring, when into the ring loped a young greyhound looking for a little fun. Miss Julia held up the class while the dog was corralled and put back in the station wagon with the other greyhounds. Shortly, open, and as often as a greyhound was put in, it simply flew out the other side. “Shut the door”, he called out as he walked past!
Gene enjoying one of his favorie activities Gene had a rather wicked sense of humor and conversation with him was always lively. We would often think up registered names for dogs. I remember one pedigree we worked out. He had mentioned a dog that was sired by devious means (of course, referring to some fudging of the pedigree or registration) and we had fun with that one – we decided that if you bred Devious Means to Toxic Ingredient, you could have a pup named Dire Straits. We often laughed at the silliest things – there’s a town in southern Indiana, just north of Louisville, we used to pass on the way back from the dog show – it’s name is Cementville. We joked about how it might be to live in that town, with such a romantic name! He often poked fun at people who took themselves too seriously or thought too well of themselves (if it was undeserved), though he had the utmost respect for those who worked hard to better themselves, learn new things and generally advance in their chosen area. He was terrifically supportive of me when I started Vet school, and he himself went back to school at the local community college, at about age 65 to study photo-graphy. He became an award-winning photographer at age 70, in addition to the formal art schooling he’d done as a young man. Gene was fascinated by most animals and his art work includes line drawings of different kinds of birds, and even a charming drawing of a daddy long legs spider. He could capture the energy and spirit of these animals in just a few strokes. I’m sure many of us have seen his wonderful line drawings of Whippets (sometimes used in the AWC Newsletter). He spent many hours observing his dogs and trying to understand the way their anatomy functioned. He remained an adamant advocate of the functional Whippet to the end of his life and enjoyed our trips to various performance venues.
Gene with his smooth fox terrier "Abby", Ch. Toofox Absolutely, 1988 Gene was a music lover, especially the “cool” school of jazz. His tastes were rather eclectic, in that he also liked rock, Motown, and classical music. His mother was a musician so he was exposed to the classics early. He was also an avid reader and especially loved biographies. I remember when he read the biography of Pamela Harriman, wife of the US ambassador, Avril Harriman. He could tell stories of her life so well, you’d have thought he’d known her personally! He loved plants and flowers – he had several beautiful orchids at the time of his death, and liked unusual flowers in his garden outdoors. Gene enjoyed cooking and had wonderful recipes for unusual foods like lamb shanks and bread pudding with whiskey sauce.
Although Gene lived a life that seemed full of happiness, like all our lives he had his share of sorrow. When his beloved Sybil died after fighting cancer for several years, he was left to care for 4 adopted daughters – two were older, and two were infants. After much soul searching, he made the difficult decision to put the two babies back up for adoption, as he felt he wouldn’t be able to properly care for them as a single parent. He sometimes wondered how the lives of those girls had turned out. Gene was a good father, spending a lot of time with his daughters, teaching them what he felt was important to their future happiness. He was a parent who believed that his job was to help his children become independent adults, responsible for their own lives and actions.

2004 was just a fabulous year all around for the Boulton family. PePe Le Pew became a champion, Ch. Bohem Macho Mambo. And, by doing so, he broke his Daddy’s record by becoming his 114th champion, making Ch. Starline’s Reign On the ALL TIME TOP PRODUCER in Whippets. Then we were followed around by TV camera and sound men for five months making “Showdog Moms and Dads”, to be seen on Bravo in 2005. Our daughter, Alexis, finally left the nest, took the horse and moved to Dallas for a new job, the boyfriend and their first house. George and I celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary in Las Vegas, by renewing our vows after the dog shows. It was only fit to bring the dogs, Ooh-La & PePe, since we met in the dog world 25 years ago, and it was around Halloween, so we dressed them up, too. Boy, it’s going to be hard to beat 2004. George and Connie Boulton wish you all a wonderful 2005. Ch. Bohem Ooh-La-La Ch. Bohem Macho Mambo PePe Le Pew

(Nat’l Sel. DC, SBIS, Can Ch. Wildwood’s Espirit De Core CD, SC, FCh. x Ch. Vic’s Ciara Femme Fatale) Pictured is Mr. Charles Trotter awarding “Julie” BOB at the Ravenna Kennel Club show 5-8-04. A week later, she finished her UKC breed championship and in August she earned her WRA Companion Racer title. At this time she continues to compete for the majors to complete her AKC Championship. She has several major reserves. We had an exciting time in the ring at one show, when she heard a video camera running. “Julie” thought it was a lure machine, as she had previously raced on the same grounds. Although distracted while looking for the bunny, she still earned WB that day. This red brindle bitch thoroughly enjoys her race events, loves life and everyone who pays attention to her.
