2002 American Whippet Club Whippet Annual

Pages 151 through 175

Whippet Health Foundation, Inc.

The Whippet Health Foundation Board of Directors voted to financially subsidize BAER hearing and cardiac health screening clinics held in conjunction with the National Specialty to encourage owners to take advantage of them and reduce owner costs. Health screening of all individuals, breeding stock as well as pets, will provide more information on the status of Whippet health. In addition, breeders can have the comfort of knowing their breeding stock is unaffected by disorders.

Several brochures are being worked on. One will cover health and behavioral aspects of Whippets. The other will cover genetic counseling and testing for Whippet breeders.

The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation did not fund the cryptorchidism preproposal submitted to them. I contacted the researcher directly and found his work is attempting to locate the DNA marker for retained testicles. The cost of his study ($50,000 per year) is exceeds what we can currently consider.

A small number of von Willebrands test results have been submitted for a data base. We would like people to continue submitting them.

Thank you to Sighthound Review and James and Cathy Gaidos for procuring and setting up a website for the Whippet Health Foundation. It can be found at www.whippethealthfoundation.org.

The beautiful Helping Hand pin is available to donors. Donors of $100 - $1000 will receive a sterling silver pin, donors of $1001 - $3000 will receive a gold pin, and donors of $3001 or more will receive a gold pin with a diamond. Donation amounts are cumulative and when a donor reaches the premium amount, they will receive a pin.

Thank you to all those that have made a donation to the Whippet Health Foundation, Inc. As of March 31, 2003, the checking and savings account balance is $69,313.

The Whippet Health Foundation was established in 1998 with specific goals to further the understanding of Whippet health, support research, establish a data base of health and scientific educational and resource materials, and develop and make available information about the care, breeding, health and development of Whippets. We want this mission to be international in scope. It is not about people, it is not about egos. It is about the Whippet and what is best for the breed’s longevity, health and well being. Your participation will help achieve those goals. We want to know what you feel is important. Please feel free to contact us about concerns or questions you may have. We value your input.

Ch. Sportingfield Tori
at Fermanagh

(Ch. Locar’s Martini On The Rocks, ROMX
x Sportingfield Whittney)

FC Picabo of Fermanagh, LCM, TRP

(DC Sportingfields Jazz Fest
x Brie Irish Creme O’Fermanagh, FCh, CR, SC)

Tori had a busy year. Besides showing, racing, and coursing, he took some time for a few female admirers. His first was an older miss, looking for a new young stud. She was a mature bitch and thought Tori might suit her fancy and he accommodated her quite well. Her common name is “Pawley”; in reality she is a beautiful bitch, Ch. Appraxin Wilhaus Renaissance. She was bred by Cal Perry (Ch. Mahtrow’s Just In Time x Appraxin Dame Edna) and she is owned by Kitty and Matthew Williams. Pawley had a beautiful litter of 5 girls and 3 boys. One of the girls, named Tess, is now in residence with her father. This litter was Futurity nominated for the 2003 National.

Next, Tori again had an experienced gal come to him, BIS/BISS Ch. Watch Me Frolic at DenGayle, “Blair” (BISS Ch. Festiva’s Knickerbocker, ROM x Ch. Watch Me Belle Bathsheba, ROM), owned by Debbie and Kathy Davenport. This match presented Debbie and Kathy with 5 girls and 2 boys on December 23, 2002. This litter is also Futurity nominated.

Tori then looked around the kennel and, when our “Beau” was ready, Tori said “This is for me.” Little did he know that Beau was a maiden, but it went well for both. Beau is FC Picabo of Fermanagh, LCM, TRP, by DC Sportingfield Jazz Fest, ROMX x Brie’s Irish Creme O’Fermanagh, FCh, CR, SC, “Bailey”. “Bailey”, from our breeding, was sired by our DC Vogel’s G Bear of Fermanagh, LCM-3, CD, NA, MC, CGC, TRP, CAVX and our Ch. Sundance Haut Brion, LCM-9. Beau, pictured above, is a beautiful bitch with a less than happy show attitude, although she is pointed. One of her better days in the ring was RWB to a 5-point major under Specialty Breeder-Judge Peggy Newcomb. Beau is due January 8th, 2003.

Proud owner Lori Nelson also had a pretty bitch in Arizona, going back to Locar and some of Martin’s lines, named Wildfire Copycat, JC. “Token” flew in from Arizona and Tori said “This is also for me.” Token was sired by Ch. Chinup Pale Noon Nightrider x Wildfire Satin Cat, JC. As I said, Token, like Pawley and Blair, goes back to Martin and Locar. She will be due around January 20, 2003.

Tori will continue his showing, racing, and coursing activities in 2003. Breeding reservations are required, along with CERF and BAER testing, to approved bitches.

Fermanagh Kennels

The past year was another exciting one for us at Fermanagh.

#1 BIF FC Roby of Wyndsor, ARX, SRA, FCh, CR, OTRM
Roby finished the year as the CWA #1 Racer for the second year in a row.
Before the racing season started, Roby had an AKC BIF.
He picked up 3.5 more points toward his NOTRA title.
He picked up his first 2 WRA points.
He won 9 straight CWA Races this year; a total of 21 straight.
Roby is now the #3 all-time racer in CWA.

#2 Ch. Sportingfield Tori at Fermanagh, FCh, JC
Tori gave us a good year also. He finished his Championship with 2 more majors, for a total of 3, all at Specialties and AWC Supported shows.
Tori earned his first 3 CWA race points.
He won the Annual CWA Match under Phoebe Booth (Shamasan) and the next day won the Race Dog Match under Donna Lynch (Hamrya). He ended #3 in the CWA Conformation standings for the year.
After finishing his championship, Tori went to win 2 BOB, under judges Dr. Richard Hilderman and Randall Tincher, and 3 BOS, under Specialty judges Mrs. Ellen Frenkel, Mr. Kent Delaney, and Ms. Carol Willumsen.
His majors came in the much same way: 5 points under Mrs. James E. Clark, 4 points under Mr. Randall Tincher, 5 points under Ms. Carol Curry. We would like to thank all of those judges.
Tori also won a big sweepstakes under judge Harriet Nash Lee at the first Mid-Atlantic Hound Assoc. Hound Group Specialty, where he was also RWD.
I thank Debbie Butt, Tori’s co-breeder and co-owner, for her great job of handling Tori through to his Championship.
Tori also finished his ASFA FCh title on December 21, 2002. He accomplished this with three 1st and one 2nd.

#3 Tyra of Wyndsor, ARX, TRP, FCh
Tyra started on January 1, 2002, by finishing her ASFA FCh with her 3rd consecutive 1st place, including a BOB in her 1st trial.
She ended 2002 much the same as she started, going BOB on December 28 for a 5-point major in an AKC Field Trial, giving her 11 points and 2 majors toward her AKC FC.
In between her coursing activities, she also finished her ARX in the CWA racing program. She finished 12th in the overall standings. This little girl has also caught the eye of several judges in the CWA conformation ring.

#4 Another highlight for 2002 was our old veteran, BIF DC Vogel’s G Bear of Fermanagh, MC, LCM-3, CD, NA, CGC, TRP, CAVX, and his buddy BIF FC Fermanagh’s Waylon, LCM, CD, when they teamed up in Brace Obedience and took 1st at the National. I know, they were the only Brace, but they got a good score and I was very proud of my home-trained guys. “Bear” was also the featured “Versatility Sighthound” in the Nov-Dec issue of the “To The Line” publication.
