2002 American Whippet Club Whippet Annual Pages 1 through 25
Cover Story Ch. Rushing Wind de Sud Adagio Jlzn I Stand All Amazed CONTESSA earned her FCh title in 2002, is a Group placer from the classes, and needs only a major to finish her championship. Contessa is smooth, classic, and lovely. WINDY finished with four majors (two 5’s - including a nice 5-pointer at Lompoc - a 4, and a 3). A powerhouse mover with a terrific attitude, we think she is very special. MAIZIE is a sweet girl and has been waiting impatiently for Contessa and Windy to finish, so she can come out and strut her stuff! Future hopefuls - an exciting litter due in February 2003 from FeFe (BIF Adagio Jilzan Queen’s Knife, SC) and Davis (Ch. Chelsea Long Kiss Goodnight, SC, FCh). Also, two lovely “redheads” whelped October 2002 - Adagio Jilzan Sunflower and Adagio Jilzan Never On Sunday (Wildfire’s Adagio Red Hot, a Drake son, x Jilzan Adagio Pikachu, FCh., a Rush daughter).

Mary Jane Pruett - Heian Remembering Doris Wear & Stoney Meadows
Mary Jane Pruett - Heian Remembering Doris Wear & Stoney Meadows Doris Wear’s Stoney Meadows kennel was brought into being in Penllyn, Pennsylvania (the Philadelphia area). A few years later, it relocated in Cambridge, Maryland, and in the 60s (or there about) the kennel was moved a last time to Cecilton, Maryland. During the years when the annual American Whippet Club Specialty Shows were regularly held in the summer in the East, usually on a private property, Doris Wear participated in those shows with numerous breeder-type Whippets. One of those years, she hurriedly packed up her station wagon and left the show site after she completed showing her dogs and, with single-mindedness, drove her vehicle through back country to rendezvous with an employee at a wide spot in the road in an unoccupied part of the state. When Doris arrived at the appointed rendezvous location, she pulled her loaded station wagon into a pull-off area on one side of the road and, across the highway, Today it is probably difficult for most breeders and exhibitors to imagine the enormity of the Stoney Meadows kennel and the number of inmates it housed. This brief story also indicates Doris Wear’s competitiveness, determination, and single mindedness. Remembering Doris Wear & Stoney Meadows Doris Wear was a wonderful lady and certainly an asset to the Whippet.
PENNYWORTH Remembering Doris Wear & Stoney Meadows The first time I visited Stoney Meadows was in 1967. I was travelling around the country, visiting kennels and looking at dogs; Peggy Newcombe put me in touch with Doris Wear and told me that I had to see a “real American kennel”. It certainly was an eye-opener - the dogs were taller than I was used to then, but extremely handsome and not nearly as different in type as I had expected; the property was beautiful and Doris Wear herself the kind of gracious, yet no-nonsense character any serious dog fancier would feel an instant affinity with. Doris was a true breeder of the old school, able to discuss her dogs in detail and perfectly open about their faults, as well as their virtues. She was also incredibly hospitable, not only spending hours showing the dogs, but also had Jim and Annie Clark over for dinner, and then brought me with her all the way to the AWC Midwest Specialty, which in those days was held the day before the Chicago International KC show. Later visits only confirmed the early impression that Doris Wear was a true lady in the old, real meaning of the word. Her start was with the early Meanders, and that was the look she really liked, in spite of the fact that Mardormere and later English imports played a much greater part in her breeding program than was usually acknowledged. The fact was that she was - unanimously, as I recall - elected to judge the very first AWC National Specialty in 1987 speaks volumes for the high esteem in which she was held. It is rather shocking to find that there are people who show Whippets who have never heard of Doris Wear or Stoney Meadows. (Almost as shocking as it was in later years to hear perfect newcomers address Mrs Wear as “Doris” - It took me decades to get that far...) If history has any meaning at all, let us respect our breed’s ancestry by knowing that her Stoney Meadows dogs are in the back of practically all American Whippets. Remembering Doris Wear & Stoney Meadows The
origin in 1962 of Elysian Whippets was largely Stoney Meadows, combined with early Pennyworth via the Kirklea Kennels of Larry Shaw. We made important outcrosses in the 1980s to Plumcreek and MorShor,
but then, these lines were largely Stoney Meadows in origin as well.
Remembering Doris Wear & Stoney Meadows Summer 1988, Maryland, Enterprise Farm Remembering Doris Wear & Stoney Meadows Two renowned Whippet breeders influenced our present day breeding program. Doris Wear was one of them. Our admiration of the Stoney Meadows Whippets was heightened when we purchased a Chalmondoley daughter out of a Rimskittle bitch who was line-bred on Stoney Meadows lines. Doris Wear found that 10 month old puppy while judging an AWC event in Dallas, Texas in 1978, finishing her championship and awarding her Best of Breed over an entry of 81! By so doing, she gave the puppy the ultimate compliment, comparing her to the lovely Stoney Meadows Snow Queen. We will be forever grateful to Mrs Wear for her guidance and strong breeding program, which became the foundation for many Raybar Whippets. CH. RAYBAR’S I’M RIM, F.CH.
