American Whippet Club
Versatility Program
2001 Versatility Award Winners
This is year number 6 for the AWC Versatility Program, and again we have a wonderful group of whippets who have earned their new titles of Versatility. These whippets demonstrate what this program is about. It is about our great breed and their owners and breeders. There are few breeds that demonstrate VERSATILITY the way whippets do. From being a Best in Show, to a Best in Field, or High in Trial in either Obedience or Agility, to Race Meet Winners, or Therapy Dogs, to Fly Ball or Tracking, and some of the best bed warmers you can hope to find.
The AWC is proud to give recognition to these great dogs of ours. Over the last 6 years there have been few titles that individuals of our breed have not been able to achieve.
We set up this program differently from that of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club. Rather than requiring a dog to be a conformation Champion or pointed, we felt there were far to many whippets who could demonstrate Versatility
who were not necessarily Show Champions. Our program has been successful in demonstrating this. I think all the whippets in the Awards program are “CHAMPIONS Of THE BREED” whether having a CH in front of their name or not. BUT, when you review the number of Champions represented in the program, it makes you proud.
The following whippets have earned Versatility Awards in the past year, indeed some have earned two Versatility titles in a single year.

• . . the beginning of Bohem Whippets was marked by the acquisition from England of a 2-month old puppy, Laguna Locomite. He became a champion, won BIS at the international show in Stockholm in 1963 and was followed that year by another puppy, Laguna Leader, who also became a BIS winning champion. Later imports from Laguna, Shaifleet, Badgewood and Fleeting kennels (which were also behind many top US Whippets of the 1960s and 1970s) followed. Some of these are far back in the pedigrees behind our present dogs, some ten generations later, and have clicked well when bred to their distant relatives in the US.
Several decades and almost 100 champions later (including a couple of early Afghans and some Greyhounds), the sport of showing and breeding Whippets remains as fascinating as ever.
2001 has been one of our best years, with two new Specialty BIS winners, several more AWC Specialty Selects, yet another AWC Top 20 qualifier, another FCI World Champion title, more homebred AKC champions, even some nice wins in the field — and, most importantly, the emergence of a promising new generation of youngsters.
Above all, thanks to the puppy buyers for their enthusiasm, support and care for their dogs. A special tribute goes to Barbara Wayne, who has kept so many of the Bohem dogs in the limelight over the past couple of years!
No Bohem puppies were whelped in 2001, but we have some interesting plans for spring and summer. The “kennel” consists of only four adult dogs and has averaged less than a litter a year. (Total: 34 litters in 40 years, mci. 9 co-bred; 20 litters in the US since 1980.)

Ch. Bohem AllAbout Eve) Blaze was an AWC Top 20 Whippet in 2000 but has only been to four shows since the spring of 2001, win-fling a Specialty BOB, a Specialty Supported BOB, and two Specialty Awards of Merit. Shown left breeder-handled with judge Mrs. Gwen Post. Although Blaze prefers to lounge on the couch or swim in the pond at home we hope to show him a few times in 2002 as well!
Congratulations to the three champions in his first litter (including SBISAm. & Can. Ch. Summit Voodoo Doll on winning the Canadian National), and to the first champion from his second litter Ch. Charlemagne Excalibur, on winning TWO Specialty Sweepstakes!
Several more are pointed from the Puppy class.

Many years ago I showed Golden Retrievers and finished a lovely bitch, owner-handled, with Specialty wins and Group placings. My return to dog shows this year has been exciting and includes the joy of sharing our lives with our two Whippet boys. My thanks to Bo for letting me have Justin, to Mrs. Yoshirnoto for allowing Nicky to come to the US, and to Barb Wayne, who, in addition to occasionally showing my boys, has become
a great friend. My appreciation also extends to Matthew Downing for his help in Florida.
Both Justin and Nicky are owned and shown by Nancy Doucette
