Recording Secretary: Katherine Shearer Members of the Board: Karin Buck and Jim Gray, MD MAWA members were well represented in the Whippet world in 1998 with some very prestigious placements in the conformation ring and performance venues. New members have added to the growth of the club with fifty-nine members and still growing. MAWA supported the back-to-back Classic City KC shows in May. The 5 th annual MAWA Specialty and Fall Supported Entry were moved to September to join forces with the AWC Southern Specialty and Supported Entry to make a memorable weekend. MAWA members' hounds were stand-outs at the AWC National Specialty in San Diego with judge Bud Gutilla awarding Best of Breed (r d year in a row) to Ch. Whippletrees Icy Affire, owned by Chris Hatcher and Cora Miller. Best of Opposite Sex went to Ch. Cherche' Wizard of the Wind, owned by Glenda Durance and Dr. Jim Gray. Glenda and Jim are long time members of MAWA and Chris is Glenda's daughter, just to keep it all in the family. Not to be outdone, Ch. O'Run Gustav Nordic Wind, SC, FCh, owned by Karin Buck and Cindy Owens, won the Top Twenty event against outstanding competition. Goose has been beautifully presented by fellow MAWA member, Jan Swayze, in most of the wins that placed him in the '97 Top Twenty rankings. The 5 th annual MAWA Specialty was held on September 17, 1998 followed on Friday with a Supported Entry at the Douglasville KC All-Breed show. The Specialty Sweeps judge Claire Newcombe awarded BISweeps to Appraxin Ragan Magnolia (9-12 bitch) owned by Dan Ragan, bred by Cal Perry. MAWA hosted 2 AKC and 6 ASFA lure coursing field trials in 1998. The club members' hounds continued to be outstanding in the performance venues with Mike and Susan Hayden's bitch, JAMs Wandering My Way, LCM8, a.k.a. Frankie, finishing 1997 as the #1 ASFA lure coursing whippet. Her kennel mate, FC TNT's She's A Heartbreaker, LCM2, a.k.a. Blondie, finished #6 ASFA and was ranked in the AKC Top Ten. 1998 has been an exciting first year for the Lone Star Whippet Club. In January, a group of 19 Whippet enthusiasts met and decided to form a new club. The Long Star Whippet Club has been formed to bring together the many Whippet fanciers of Texas and the surrounding areas. Our main objectives are to hold licensed specialty conformation shows and lure coursing events. The first year has been very busy. The Officers and Board were elected, a Constitution was created and approved, we held two very successful all-breed fun matches, and had plans for a club fun-run that was side-lined by the fickle Texas weather. 1999 looks to be just as exciting, with more matches of both conformation and lure coursing types, as well as AKC recognition.
