(NSBIS Ch. Merci Isle Meridian, JC, ROM x Merci Isle A Distant Mirror, JC) Dreamy Draw is a section of highway in the Arizona desert linking Phoenix and Scotsdale. To pass through this extraordinary place, rich in history color and fauna, is to experience the strength and beauty of nature surviving within the concrete and technology of humanity. It is particularly breathtaking at sunset. Cover shot at 9 months of age by Jean McCord. “Pan” finished her AKC bench title at 18 months, with three 5-point majors, under such diverse opinions as Carol Curry, Connie Brunkow, Shelley Hennessey, and John Reeve-Newson. The latter awarded her a Group 4 from the BBE class. We want to express our gratitude to Lisa Buzzell for her talented presentation of Pan to two of her majors, and her expert care and handling of many of our dogs at shows and field events.

Founded January11, 1930 Applications for membership in the American Whippet Club are available Subscription to the AWC Whippet News (including monthly Newsletter and Annual) - $20.00 per year WHIPPET NEWS AND NEWSLETTER EDITOR ASSOCIATE EDITOR WHIPPET NEWS ANNUAL EDITOR The American Whippet Club 1997 has been a “growing” year for the AWC. In April, at our 11th National Specialty, we had the largest entry ever — 618 whippets with a total entry of 930! Our Annual meeting was well attended, with good dialogue, and for the year we welcomed forty-six new members to the ranks. Highlights of the year include: • First Versatility Awards • Two new Lifetime Achievement Awards Bo Bengston and Barbara Koch • A National Obedience Chairman Shelley Hennessy • A Code of Ethics • Creation of the Whippet Health Foundation I feel the establishment of the Health Foundation is one of our club’s most important undertakings. The purpose of the Foundation is to identify significant health problems in our breed and provide funding for the necessary research to eradicate those problems. We have been fortunate to have a reasonably healthy breed and it is up to us to see that this remains so. --Harriett Nash Lee

“Devon” is still looking for that increasingly annoying last major. So we will wait for the outdoor shows this summer (where things are more interesting) D U N B E R R Y
When Donna Lynch told me last winter that she’d bred her Teacher’s Pet, always one of my favorites, to her wonderful “Stinger”, I was envious. When she told me the result was a litter of irish-marked fawns (don’t ask me how!), I was positively green. And when I saw “Rose”, I was in love. What a wonderful little girl — from her big dark eyes, to her very correct front, to her very sound rear, and every fawn bit of her in between. And, yes, she can move too. Best of all is the most wonderful “has-no-enemies-watch-out-world-here-I-come” temperament. Rose and her sister traded class placements for four days at their first shows, the huge MidWest Specialty weekend, with their brother going WD at the Specialty. Rose’s first points were a major under Dr. Greathouse at Central Ohio Kennel Club. She was Best In Sweeps and RWB at the Medina Kennel Club AWC Supported Entry. We are looking forward to lots of fun with Rose this summer. Thank you Donna, for this bright, beautiful bitch.
