1994 American Whippet Club Whippet Annual Pages 226 through 250
(SBIS Ch. Festiva's Knickerbocker x Ch. Chelsea Saffron, ROM) Christy began her show career with co-breeder/co-owner Deann Christianson. In her able hands, Christy won her '93 Futurity class under Harriett Lee and first points under Katrina Hamilton Grossman. Upon returning to South Carolina, Christy was BIM under Barbara Henderson. This was the beginning of a winning streak that culminated in the completion of her championship in only a smattering of spring shows. Christy's wins were all owner-handled under an impressive array of "all rounder" and breeder judges: Betty Sandberg, Lorraine Groshans, Jim White, Ken Miller and Betsy Prior (BOB, first time out as a Special). Thank you Deann and Dianne for Christy - she's a blast!

Running exclusively against the toughest California coursing competition in both Breed and Mixed hunts, Vegas is the Number One Whippet and the Number Two overall sighthound in NOFCA for 1994. We are extremely proud of this beautiful homebred bitch, who combines extreme elegance with speed and beauty. Our thanks to all those who cheered her on in this dream year of coursing.
So special, my "sidekick". I've had many friends over the years, but only two best friends - my wife, Penny, and my buddy, King. When I was first introduced to whippets, I fell in love with the "blues" and got King. We've had so many good years that it's hard to let go - we've done everything - racing, lure coursing, obedience and show and shared life, excitedly looking forward to the very next challenge. Never has anyone shared life with a more gracious friend. At no time has this one known a more loyal or devoted companion. "King's" love and trust knew no limits, nor did his effort to please. Helping to train youngsters or guarding the "girls" - this man did everything to please. Never with an offensive gesture, he will be remembered as the "King". The Monarch has gone to ready a place for those who knew and loved his image and dedication. His friends at "Pendel" look forward to being with him .. .
"Nathan", pictured at 10 months, is by Windrose Pinafore Front Pg. News, FCh x Shamasan Gladys Night, JC. His sister, S. Windrose Just Do It, "Token", waits in the wings with James and Cathy Gaidos. Also watch for S. lmani In the Paint (Hodge), S. Fast Break (Howe) and S. Winning Streak (Ullmann & Booth).
"Maybe", pictured at 7 months, is by AmCanCh. Stormbay Flin (imp. Aust) x Shamasan Safe At Home, SC (litter sister to Harry - see next page). She made her debut at 8 months, winning a Bred-by class of 5. She lives with her co-breeders, Bill & Suzi Holmes. Watch for her and her littermates, S. Stealing Home (Ramsdell), S. South Bend Blue Sox (Klinger) and S. Racine Belle (Glover).
"Madonna", aptly named, with her beautiful eyes and irrepressible spirit, is by AmCanCh. Stormbay Flin (imp. Aust.) x CanCh. Sporting Fields Amazone (littermate to Winnie). She was bred by Wiebke Heron and Margaret Whelan. Thanks Wiebke and Marg for this sound and seductive comedienne. I love her dearly. She will be bred to Ch. Shamasan Homespun Heritage (see next page), doubling up on their Australian pedigree. Of course, her eyes are cleared annually by an ACVO ophthalmolgist.
"Harry's" first champion daughter, out of the beautiful Ch. Hound-Hill Safe Harbor (a Harbor Lights daughter), is Ch. Hound-Hill Flags Flying (Miller). Flags Flying finished with 4 majors, 3 BOB over group winning Specials, and a Group placement at Eastern D.C., from the classes. Her first outing as a Special, she again was BOB. We are proud of her. "Harry's" eyes are cleared annually by an ACVO ophthalmologist. He stands at stud to bitches with the same.
(A-Few Stone Mountain x Ch. Raybar's On The Brink) Betsy is shown here winning the Brood Bitch class at the 1994 AWC Southern Specialty. She is pictured winning, with her children, Trochee Final Analysis, Ch. Broadstrider By George and Ch. Broadstrider's Georgie Girl. Betsy also won the Veteran Bitch class with Doug Broadfoot handling. Thank you, Judge Carol Curry.
Metropolitan Atlanta Whippet Association, Inc. — Est. 1981
1994 was a banner year for MAWA, the Metropolitan Atlanta Whippet Association. In the first full year as an affiliated AKC breed specialty club, MAWA held its inaugural specialty show on October 14th, with an entry of 105 in the breed under Mr. Doug Arthur and 40 in Sweeps under Mr. Pat Petit. This was followed by a supported entry with the Atlanta KC the next day. Mr. Alan Pepper judged 114 in the regular classes and Mr. Nelson Layne had 33 in Sweeps. Mrs. Joan Layne judged a Sanction B match for the club in October. The club hosted four ASFA Lure Coursing field trials and three AKC Lure Coursing field trials and tests during the year. Two days of AKC trials and JC tests at the Peach Blossom Cluster (five days of conformation) in Perry, GA, gave the club an opportunity to show the public another facet of the sport of dogs with a two-day entry of 164. Plans are to repeat this event in April, 1995, at the request of the cluster. Numerous members' dogs have done well in 1993-94, both in conformation and on the field. Special mention should be made of Ch. Elysian A-Few Perrier, LCM, bred by lifetime member and club founder, Frances Few Hembree and owned by Dr. Jim Gray and Glenda Durrance. "Perry" tied the all-time record for the most Specialty Best of Breed wins when he went BOB at the MAWA specialty under Mr. Doug Arthur. On the field, FCh. Carbeth's Mr. Wright, LCM 6, better known as "Dino," owned by L. & D. Richards and Glenda Durrance, finished #1 (all breeds) in ASFA in 1993 and, as of this writing, is poised to repeat again in 1994 in both ASFA and AKC lure coursing.
