One O'Clock Sunrise at Jilzan, JC (Ch. Wildfire's Exclusive x One O'Clock April Romance) We predicted that MILLIE would turn a few heads and give us some exciting times, AND SHE SURE DID!! Watch for this smooth fawn beauty - we think she'll turn your head, too! Ch. Windrose Pinafore Classified, LCM "BABE' is starting her obedience career with some great scores. Babe's first weekend out was in Canada: she placed first in her class September 18th with a 194 1/2, and second in her class the next day with a 197 1/2! Back in the U.S.A., in December, Fay and Babe scored a 196 and High In Trial at an All-Breed Fun Match. This spirited and determined team are looking forward to "getting serious" in 1994. Fay will also be taking the old fellow, Stevie (Ch. Rapahana's Sharp Dressed Man, FCh.) into the obedience ring, because he loves it as much his kids do, much to our delighted surprise. AMERICAN WHIPPET CLUB RESCUE The National Whippet Rescue program established in late Spring of 1992 has continued to grow in the past twelve months due to very dedicated and caring volunteers and unwavering support by individual members of the American Whippet Club. Interest has expanded in developing local rescue efforts in many areas of the country and networking between individuals has aided in the placement of many more dogs. Awareness of the rescue problem has generated an increase in the funding and more creative fund raising projects, along with a greater consciousness of the breeders role and responsibility for solutions. In the coming year we hope to focus on additional fund raising and breeder/public awareness. The purpose of the American Whippet Club Rescue program is to rescue stray, abandoned, relinquished and/or impounded Whippets and provides foster care, with the eventual goal being the adoption/placement of the rescued animal to a permanent, loving home. Dogs are normally spayed/neutered and vaccinated prior to placement. WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP? Check to see if there is a local Rescue effort already in existance. Offer your assistance. Perhaps you could foster a Whippet until a new home is found, could provide transportation for rescue dogs, help with a fund raising project, check the shelter on a regular basis, send them referrals, or make a donation. If there is not a program in your area, maybe you could unify the local breeders and start one - or volunteer yourself We plan to hold a Rescue Seminar every year at the National Specialty to help new recruits and to discuss common problems and discuss solutions. If you can help, or would like to make a donation contact: Sally deBeque Smith - AWC Rescue - 250 WCR 3 - Erie, CO 80516 (303) 666-9614 Fax # (303) 857-9444. THE LONG TERM SOLUTION If you are a breeder , the most important contribution you can make to Whippet Rescue is to assume responsibility for any dog that you bred or sold. The long term solution to Whippet Rescue is BREEDING CONTROL. Make every breeding count - breed only the best. Breed dogs who have something to offer the Whippet breed - not just because that dog has a title in front of or behind his name. Research genotype and phenotype - don't breed for sentimental reasons or because a dog is locally convinent for you. Make sure you have homes for these puppies you are planning and have the facility and the time to manage them. Allow only the best from your litters to be bred - utilize spay/neuter contracts, spay/neuter deposits, or limited AKC registrations with all your pet buyers to insure compliance. Think how far along the Whippet breed might be if only the top 5 or 10% of our litters were used for reproduction purposes? Make the demand for Whippets high by utilizing BREEDING CONTROL. I saw Sandi and Kristy about a half a block down, waving at me to pull over. I rolled my window down, and they were saying they'd found her. At the question in my eyes, Kristy and Sandi started shaking their heads, and from across the street I could see Kristy's face crumple like a person starting to cry. "She's dead, Claire." She was named before she was born; it was as if I knew she was coming. She was born on her father's birthday, and she was born old. She studied people, and sometimes I had the peculiar idea she was staring at me through multiple lifetimes. She liked to sleep on top of me; she liked to carry her biscuits; she liked to attack me from behind - I would feel her tiny feet land in the small of my back, hear a husky "woo, woo" and turn to see her eyes twinkle. As I walked behind her to the field that morning, I had been thinking, "This is the personality I've been waiting for. Why am I wasting my time trying to breed Cloudy?" August "You can't keep beating yourself up about this." "It was a coincidence." "No one can run as fast as a whippet." But I relive it and relive it. And in the torturous repetition, I see the causes extending back over the years; years that started out with vitality and movement and dreams that somehow slowed and wound down, until I see myself slogging my way through them, weighed down with an overblown lifestyle. I used to be a runner - no, not as fast as a whippet; not even as fast as the domestic rabbit someone had dumped in the field that started the nightmare come true; but certainly as fast as the well-meaning jogger who, in trying to catch Persia, frightened and confused her, while far behind I struggled to reach her, trying to run, but gasping for breath. She could not hear me screaming her name as she turned and ran the wrong direction. I whisper it now, at odd times, at quiet times. I whisper it on my way home, when I near the place she was killed. I whisper it when I'm on the rusty NordicTrack on the driveway, as the moon sets behind the fir trees, and the sweat runs in my eyes and mix' es with the tears to soak my shirt. It's pathetic, this struggle - a middle-aged, overweight woman trying to banish the demon "if only" by engineering a change. I am a lifetime too late. But I know in my heart that if I do not change my life, she was the coincidence. I don't think I could bear that. November The old NordicTrack complains bitterly as I roll it out to the driveway and squeaks so loudly I wonder the neighbors don't complain. Soon the winter rains will start in earnest and drive me inside, but for now, I find that watching the stars fade in the early light of dawn makes me feel closer to the power. It is a ritual, being out here, sweating on this machine, a daily ritual. They tease me at work, grabbing a baggy pant leg. "We've got to take this girl shop ping!" But the changes are more than clothes that now hang like sacks on me. One co-worker says, "I'm proud of you - I wish I had your energy." I try to tell her about the consequences of not taking care of yourself and how exercise breeds energy - the momentum comes after you start. She stares at me a moment, then changes the subject. I never wanted to hear it either. Persia has done what no good intentions or exhortations were ever able to do. She has shaken me out of my complacency. She has shown me I have the power to change. She has brought me back to life.

DIABLESSE WHIPPETS
WHAT A YEAR ! ! ! It would be much too long to tell you all the pleasure in the ring, as well as at home, that I have had with my whippets throughout the year. Paris Say You Will -"William" (top right). He is the perfect gentleman at home and is a very faithful companion. William gave me a gorgeous son. William was out of the ring for several months due to a lure coursing injury, but had an excellent recovery. His goals for 1994 are to have Dual Champion Title (conformation title is 2 singles away ! ! and a C.D. in obedience). His son, Paris Diablesse Quinn (left top corner), is a combination of elegance and power; he's on his way to his conformation title. Quinn has all the good qualities of his father and more! Thank you William! He also won his class in the Futurity at the Whippet National. Paris Diablesse Passe Partout (middle, "Madon"). What a girl! She knows what she wants! She just wants to be a star! She started by winning at the Whippet National in the biggest class: 6-9 months, which had 45 entries, under Mrs. Groshans. It was followed by a four point major from the puppy class under Mr. Hartinger. Her goals are to catch the rabbit in the field and to show. Paris Diablesse D'Oree ("Charlotte" in the front). She is full of charisma; she helped me become a better handler; she is always ready to show off! I am proud of her conformation title, she earned it all owner-handled. Charlotte earned her Canadian Championship in three shows. Thanks to Dave Markus for handling her. It's a pleasure to share my life with Charlotte. Thanks to my best friend for her beautiful breeding and for all her support throughout the year, plus to all the whippet people I met at the shows. See you there! LEILA DOWNEN Email
