DEBMAR Proudly Presents for '94
DEBMAR Deborah Bahm River Ridge, LA Presented By: Lori Wilson WINDBORN COVER STORY
CH. MARIAL'S WHITEWATER, CD, ARM, ORC (CERF #WP-243/93-120)* Whitewater was whelped July 6, 1983, sired by Lukes Jay-Jess of Toro, ARM out of Ch. Marial's Memphis, ARM, ROMX. He is a white and red brindle particolor standing 21 3/4" with racing weight of 37 lbs. He completed his ARM in 1984 at the age of 15 months and went on to earn the Oval Racing Championship (ORC) in 1986, the AKC Bench Championship in September 1988 in nine months of showing and the Obedience Companion Dog title in 1988 in three consecutive trials. With his many credentials, he is considered by many to be the top dual purpose Whippet in the history of the AWC's NPR Program. The cover picture of Whitewater was taken at the June 1986 NPR conducted at Hamilton, Ohio. "Bonzo" won 40 NPRs during his outstanding racing career. His total of 231 National ARM points places him 3rd on the all-time NPR standings. He was NPR National Champion in 1987, the same year he won the inaugural National NPR, held in conjunction with the first ever AWC National Specialty held at Columbus, Ohio. Possessing 11.4 second speed over the 200 yard distance, Bonzo was unofficially clocked at 11.11 seconds at the August 1986 NPR held at Antioch, Illinois. Bonzo has successfully competed at several AWC National Specialties, winning the ARM/F.Ch. class at the 1988 and 1989 &WC Nationals. He is pictured at the 1989 AWC National in Dallas, Texas, under judge Carol Curry. the sire of three-time Continental Whippet Alliance (CWA) National Champion Marial's Reata Saltwater, TRP, ARX, DPC (pictured elsewhere in this issue). "Bonzo" epitomizes the dual-purpose goals of the Maria! breeding program which began in 1963. We salute him in this, our 30th year in Whippet competition. Eyes checked clear of defects. A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT - 1993 saw the completion of several projects, including ratification of the revised constitution and bylaws, completion of the breed video, approval of the breed standard clarification regarding height disqualifications, and completion of an information flyer to be enclosed with each individual registration certificate issued by AKC. The American Whippet Club sponsored its first independent AKC and ASFA lure coursing events. We now take for granted a successful National Specialty week, a top quality Annual, an informative Newsletter, an efficiently run NPR program, well attended regional specialties and supported entries, and an active rescue program. Untold hours of effort by everyone involved make these things available to all whippet owners. There are, of course, a number of new problems to deal with in the upcoming year. Plans to focus more effort on breeder education are in the works. More emphasis on breeding healthy whippets, screened as carefully as possible for inheritable defects, will be a top priority. Development of an awards program to acknowledge AWC members who strive to produce top quality, versatile whippets is also on the drawing board. And, as always, ways to make the AWC Board more accessible and responsible to the member ship we serve are being explored. As we move into 1994, I would like to thank all the Board members and committee chairs who put their personal agendas on the "back burner" in order to devote countless hours to the challenging task of making the American Whippet Club the best it can be. I invite every member to join us in attaining this goal. Cathy Gaidos BEST IN SHOW
