Surrey Hill's Houston, F.Ch., ROM x Ch. Karasar's Klassic Keepsake)
PICTURED AT 7 MONTHS We believe “OLIVER”, at 7 months of age, is the youngest whippet champion in the history of the breed in the U.S. He was shown a total of 5 times to finish his championship. He won a major his first weekend out from the puppy class and the next weekend shown won three 4-point majors, three Best of Breeds and three Group placements, all from the puppy class. The weekend after he finished, he competed at the A.W.C. Southern Specialty weekend, making the cut at 7 months of age in a huge specials class and winning his sweepstakes class. He has been shown a total of 4 more times since the Southern Specialty, winning 2 more Best of Breeds, 2 Best of Opposites and another Group placement, all at 8 months of age! One of his Best of Breeds was under breeder-judge Margaret Newcombe of PEN NYWORTH fame in an entry of 32 whippets. We believe his TOTAL SOUNDNESS, lovely balance, and beautiful breed type has carried him through at such a young age. “OLIVER” and his “Klassmates”, who have both won 5-point majors as puppies (see inside), have made many fans in and outside the whippet fancy and a repeat breeding MAY be planned for 1991. But the biggest thrill by far is that “OLIVER” is our fifth generation breeder-owner-handled champion! When my parents, Rudy and Arlene Kuper, got their first whippet in 1965 and bred our first champion 2 years later, I never dreamed that I would show five generations of champions and be into my fourth decade with whippets! The love and companionship the whippets have given me throughout the years have meant more to me than all their show wins combined. (Oh. Delacreme De La Renta x Oh. Rafina Bunny Hop, 5-18-87) Flagship champion of this breeding and always owner-handled, Digger finished his American Championship with three majors. Thank you Mrs. Wear, L. Masley, B. Krause, R. Tongren, L. Riddle, I Speight, and E. Stevenson. He finished his Canadian Championship in five shows with two BOB's and a Group 3. Digger completed an ASFA Field Championship in seven trials, including an exciting 40 point maximum first place. He was pointed and BOB in his only Canadian lure coursing trial. Digger is running for an LCM. Digger earned a C.D. in his first three trials and now is training for Open. He needs one more leg to complete his C.D. in Canada. Kudos to breeder Barbara Pendergrass and the owners of Digger's seven champion siblings: Owners: TOM and IRENE NELSON 4931 5. WELLSVILLE HWY. BLISSFIELD, Ml 49228
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT - 1990 saw significant progress in the fancy. Some long-standing problems have been resolved and for some we have not yet found solutions. Not only has out membership increased, but the active participation of the members has been most gratifying. One of our most notable successes was the 4th National Specialty in Palo Alto, California. The addition of the Top-Twenty competition was enjoyed by all. The Futurity continues to be well-supported and this year saw the addition of the Maturity Class. As we increase the number of activities associated with our National Specialty, I want to stress the importance of attending the Annual Meeting. This is the membership's opportunity for expressing their concerns regarding Club matters. I was pleased to be able to attend three of the regional Specialties and having viewed the entries, I feel the breed has made considerable progress and is in good shape. The Board of Directors that you elected is very capable and has been working very diligently on your behalf. We have increased the number of Board meetings and are in continual communication with one another. In April 1990, an AWC tile plaque was carried aboard the space shuttle, which deployed the Hubble Telescope. Hopefully, we will be presenting that plaque to the Dog Museum in April 1991 during the National Specialty week in St. Louis, MO. Sincere thanks to Astronaut Steve Hawley for letting the world know that Whippets do indeed travel the fastest and farthest of any dog! 1990 was saddened with the passing of several long-time friends of the fancy - Ann Gallup Marsh, Bill Dresser and P.J. McClure. They will be sorely missed. As I have traveled around the country, I am continually impressed with the friendliness exhibited by the people in our breed, and the willingness to share knowledge with each other. Hopefully, we will continue in this manner as it can only help in preserving the breed we love so well. Looking forward to seeing everyone at our 5th National Specialty and Annual Meeting in St. Louis in April. -Barbara Henderson, VMD

Jessica moved to Canda - and moved again with her new family. As a result of all this moving, she was shown little in 1990, but is pointed in Canada (and the U.S.) and has a BOS from the classes in Canada (and a BOB from the classes in the U.S.). Owner Breeders

AMERICAN WHIPPET CLUB 1990 was a busy year for the East Region, with our full compliment of Supported entries. These were Champlain Valley KC in Vermont, Delaware Valley KC in Pennsylvania, Kanadesaga KC in New York, and Somerset Hills KC in New Jersey. My thanks to the folks responsible for organizing these affairs - Dale Healey, Estelle Lyon, and to Stacy Davis, who was in charge of trophies for two of the supports as well as the Eastern Specialty. We had a special treat the night before our Specialty with a Pre-Show picnic at SPORTING FIELDS. Our thanks to Donne Butt and Debbie and Tony Giles for their hospitality. The Specialty was held with Huntingdon Valley KC in Ambler, PA on June 2, 1990. There was an entry of 145 Whippets in 212 entries, with Mr. Kent Delaney judging the Breed and Mrs. Mary Dukes judging Sweepstakes.
Come share another fun weekend in Pennsylvania in June 1991 when our Specialty will be judged by Mr. Doug Arthur and Sweepstakes will be done by Ms. Donna Kelley. The Supported Entry the following day will have Mrs. Joan Goldstein as the judge.
