Whippet Fanciers of the Delaware Valley Area

The Jersey Rag Racers had another excellent year in 1989. To fulfill our goal of promoting the versatile whippet, the club held nearly every kind of recognized competition.

The club hosted four all-breed field trials under the auspices of ASFA. Each event averaged over 50 hounds.

JRR held four National Point Races, sanctioned by the American Whippet Club. Five U-val races were held, including a Back-To- Back U-val Race weekend in conjunction with the Hampton Roads Whippet Club.

The club held the popular Whippet Versatility Weekend for the fourth consecutive year. This event attracts whippets from all over the East Coast, South, Midwest and Canada , and the numbers have grown steadily each year.

This year, 57 whippets competed in the field trial. 62 whippets ran in the AWC­ sanctioned National Point Race. 48 whippets competed in the U-val race, the maximum number allowed for that event.

There was a spectacular entry of 77 whippets in the specialty match, making this the largest whippet match show in the country. 11 whippets competed in obedience.

The club also gave its own award of recognition to dogs owned by members of the club who won titles in 1988. There were 19 titles, won by 17 different dogs. Breed championships were won by four dogs. There were eight Field Champions, and three Lure Coursers of Merit. Three won the American Whippet Club's Award of Racing Merit. One scored an Oval Racing Championship.

A new event debuted this year, the Jersey Derby, an endurance trial. The event was put together by Marcia Wirth and Ingrid Wood, and was so successful in the spring that they hosted a second one in December.

For many years, the President and guiding force of the club has been hard­ working whippet fancier Jack McManus. New officers were elected in 1988, with the President's position passing to Libby Kirchner. Marcia Wirth was elected Vice President, Fritz Kirchner, Treasurer, and Lynda Campo, Secretary.

The JRR was also pleased that more and more whippet fanciers of the Delaware Valley area joined us in our whippet-related activities. Membership in the club nearly doubled in 1989.

The Jersey Rag Racers are looking forward eagerly to new year. In 1990, we will again hold four field trials, four NPR races and four U-vals. The Fourth of July Whippet Versatility Weekend will take place June 30, July 1, and July 4, a Wednesday. We welcome all whippet fanciers to join us in this fun event!

THE LONG ROAD TO UTILITY

(Is Paved with Procrastinations, Problems & Unpredictability!)

In December 1985, I wrote in my Annual ad, "Onto Utility' - with a Maternity break!" Right on schedule, in January 1986, Sara was bred, and March saw the arrival of seven bouncing puppies. I spend a lot of time with my babies, so the utility work seemed to be mostly on hold. We had started our signals and scent articles, and worked on them sporadically during that time.

1986 rolled on by, with little done except starting breed showing the two pups I kept. 1987 came around, and we buckled down to work, in between shows and lure coursing. Things were going pretty well - signals were good, scent articles were improving, and we started our go-outs and jumping. One change I made was to use "Scram" for my verbal command - when she was hesitant, 'Sara, go!' sounded too much like NO! We got the occasional "What, me lay down on that cold, hard floor?" on signals (typical Whippet!). Gloves were just fun - Sara loves to fetch! Go-outs were enthusiastic, but spotty (our "bunny" target sometimes distracted us from business). Jumping was a little scary - she flies over them with such verve that I'm always afraid she'll

slip, or misjudge her angle, and crash! (Fingers crossed that she doesn't!) By the end of 1987, I was pleased with substantial progress.

Then came 1988, and the big move to Arizona. I bred Sara in January, and even though she missed, we missed working time. With lots of settling in, and job hunting, obedience went on hold again. I took the opportunity to hit a lot of shows all over the West, and got in some lure coursing. We didn't do much utility, but it was a very interesting year! Scent articles were pretty steady, but go-outs were still a problem. (I could have been elected president of the Procrastinator's Club, if I'd ever gotten around to joining!) Guess what my New Year's Resolution was?

1989 snuck up on us, and I realized that Sara would turn seven in August! I wanted a second litter from her, so it was now or never! So, the first of April saw the advent of three beautiful boys. I also figured that I had better really buckle down on the obedience, so we got cracking! I was now working totally on my own, so that just made everything a little bit tougher. Early fall found us entering every match I could get to, with decidedly mixed results! After several very encouraging performances, Sara abruptly decided that she wanted absolutely nothing to do with the metal scent article! The lower jump heights pleased me, as they eliminated any ideas about going under, although she still goes around sometimes. The new moving stand was easier than I expected it to be - after all those years of teaching Sara to sit in front, I thought a direct return to heel position would be tougher than it was. The thing I worked the hardest on was attitude - I want a happy dog, and Sara basically enjoys it, so we have tried very hard to keep it that way!

November of 1989 we entered four obedience trials. The first one got the butterflies settled - it wasn't as bad as I'd thought! We had a two-exercise flunk, and a one-exercise flunk, and a day of gale-force winds, and I was rather encouraged - we're getting very close! Spring of 1990 will find us back out, with more time and mileage under our belts (and collars). Here's hoping we finally earn that U.D.!

WHIPPET TITLES: ALPHABET SOUP?

There are many titles an American Whippet may earn. These titles are usually indicated as abbreviations before or after its American Kennel Club registered name. These titles have been referred to as "alphabet soup" by those not familiar with them. To clear up any confusion, a glossary of titles and affiliated organizations are listed below. Readers wishing to learn more about eligibility and rules for a particular title should contact the appropriate organization at the address indicated. Foreign titles are not listed.

AKC American Kennel Club. The AKC awards all obedience and conformation titles. For more information, contact the AKC Secretary at 51 Madison Avenue, New York, New York 10010.

ARM - Award of Racing Merit. Program established in 1967 by the American Whippet Club to recognize outstanding race Whippets competing at approved National Point Race (NPR) meets. Fifteen ARM points are required for the title. On a 200 yard straight track, ARM titled Whippets compete against non titled dogs, but ARM points are earned only by non-ARM dogs. Number of ARM points earned per meet is determined by the total number of Whippets competing — twenty dogs are required for the minimum number/set of points (3 and 1) to be earned, 50 or more Whippets are required for the maximum number/set of points (6, 4, 2). Spayed / neutered Whippets compete separately from non-spayed / neutered Whippets. Whippets disqualified under the Breed Standard or AKC Rules are ineligible to compete in the Award of Racing Merit program.

ASFA - American Sighthound Field Association. Lure coursing organization, awards the FCh and LCM. Formed in 1972. For more information contact Sandy Wright, 1235 Pine Grove Road, Hanover, Pennsylvania 17331.

AWC - American Whippet Club. Parent breed club established in 1930, awards the Award of Racing Merit, Register of Merit and Register of Merit Excellent titles. For more information contact Harriett Lee, AWC Secretary, 14 Oak Circle, Charlottesville, Virginia 22901.

CC - Coursing Champion. Awarded by the National Open Field Coursing Association. 100 points are required for the title, of which 10 points must be in mixed breed competition. Whippets compete against Whippets as well as other sighthound breeds and are slipped on a hare in open terrain. Scoring of the hunt is based on speed, endurance, agility, touch/take and desire. Competition is limited to those States with jackrabbit populations. Points awarded basically the same as for Field Champion from ASFA, except the dog must make a kill for the title.

CD - Companion Dog. Obedience title awarded by the American Kennel Club for competing in the Novice Obedience Class. Title requires three qualifying scores under three different judges. A qualifying score is a total of 170 points out of a possible 200, with more than 50% scored in each of the six required exercises. Exercises vary from heeling on and off leash, to the recall to a long sit and down with handlers in sight of the dog.

CDX - Companion Dog Excellent. Obedience title awarded by the American Kennel Club for competing in the Open Obedience Class. Same qualifying score requirements as the CD but exercises are more difficult and complex than in Novice. There are seven required exercises including jumping, retrieving, drop on recall, heeling off leash and long sits and down with the handler out-of-sight of the dog.

CH - Champion. Conformation title awarded by the American Kennel Club. Requires 15 points for the title, with six or more of the 15 points won at two shows with a rating of three or more championship points each and under two different judges. In addition, the balance of the points must have been won under a judge other than those awarding the six points mentioned above. The number of points earned at a show are determined by the number competing according to the Schedule of Points established by the Board of Directors of the American Kennel Club. Championship points are only earned by those animals selected by the judge as Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. The maximum number of points that can be earned at one show is five.

CM - Courser of Merit. Open field coursing title awarded by the National Open Field Coursing Association. Same points earned for CC (Coursing Champion) apply to this title, but 100 points must be in Whippet competition.

FCh - Field Champion. Lure coursing title awarded by American Sighthound Field Association. 100 points are required in Open Stake competition for the title, with two first placements within the 100 points, or one first place and two seconds. The scoring is based on speed, endurance, agility, enthusiasm and follow after the lure, which follows a specific course pattern, including turns and straightaways.

LCM - Lure Courser of Merit. Lure coursing title awarded by American Sighthound Field Association. Once a Whippet earns the Field Champion (FCh) title, it competes in the Field Champion stake and starts earning points all over again. 300 points and four first placements are required for the Lure Courser of Merit (LCM) in Field Stake competition. If the Field Champion stakes winner wins the Best of Breed runoff with the Open Stakes winner, it is eligible for the highest set of points, if in the Open Stake.

NACA - North American Coursing Association. A new organization formed by a small group to serve the coursing needs of the Rocky Mountain area. Most rules and requirements are the same as NOFCAs with a few exceptions. For more information contact Vickie Barrett, Box 114B, Byers, Colorado 80103.

NACC - North American Coursing Champion. Awarded by the North American Coursing Association. Requirements basically the same as NOFCA Coursing Champion title.

NACM - North American Courser of Merit. Awarded by the North American Coursing Association. Requirements basically the same as NOFCA Courser of Merit title.

NAWRA - North American Whippet Racing Association. Sponsors 200 yard straight track racing and awards the Racing Championship (RCH). A west coast organization formed in 1988. For more information contact Jean Balint, 2037 San Luis Street, Fairfield, California 94533.

NOFCA - National Open Field Coursing Association. Awards the Coursing Champion (CC) and Courser of Merit (CM) for open field coursing after jackrabbits. Limited to regions with jackrabbit populations. Active hunting areas are currently California, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. NOTRA - National Oval Track Racing Association. Formed in 1975. Awards the Oval Racing Champion title (ORC) to sighthounds competing on oval tracks at various distances. For more information contact David Rosenstock, 540 Glenwood Highway, Goldendale, Washington 98620.

NPR - National Point Race, official race meet approved by the American Whippet Club

ORC - Oval Racing Champion. Awarded by the National Oval Track Racing Association. Fifteen ORC points are required for the title. Track distances may be from 220 to 520 yards, on either a circular or U-shaped track. Earning ORC points is similar to the Award of Racing Merit (ARM) except the minimum entry for points is 15 rather than 20. AKC registered sighthounds with Breed Standard disqualifications allowed to compete.

RCH - Racing Champion. Awarded by the North American Whippet Racing Association. Fifteen Champion points required for the title. Scoring similar to ARM program. Spayed / neutered dogs compete with non-spayed / neutered dogs. Except for height disqualification, Whippets with Breed Standard disqualifications are allowed to compete.

ROM - Register of Merit. Awarded by the American Whippet Club for sires producing 15 or more champions of record, Award of Racing Merit winners or obedience title winners, and dams producing 5 or more champions of record, Award of Racing Merit winners, or obedience title winners.

ROMX - Register of Merit Excellent. Awarded by the American Whippet Club. Criteria similar to Register of Merit (ROM) except number of Champion, Award of Racing Merit, or obedience titled get for males is 25, and 10 for dams.

TD - Tracking Dog. Title awarded by the American Kennel Club for dogs successfully completing one tracking pattern, scored by an AKC licensed judge on a pass / fail basis. Precertification required before official competition. Track is not less than 440 or more than 500 yards.

TDX - Tracking Dog Excellent. Same as Tracking Dog title but tracks are longer, more complex and over difficult terrain. Track is 800-1000 yards.

UD - Utility Dog. Obedience title awarded by the American Kennel Club for competing in the Utility Class. Same qualifying score requirements as the CD and CDX titles, but the exercises are more difficult than Novice and Open classes. There are six Utility exercises, including non-verbal signal exercises, scent discrimination of articles, directed retrieving and jumping, plus a stand and examination.

A week after Jackie's TD, her daughter Babs started having eye problems. We were eventually referred to the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Babs was diagnosed as having secondary glaucoma resulting from a possibly-inherited eye disease known as lens luxation with vitreous prolapse, more commonly seen in terriers, greyhounds, and springers. She had three emergency eye surgeries; both eyes were removed and of course she is totally blind. Babs has adjusted very well and enjoys going as many places as possible to say "hi" to her friends. She and Jackie are both official Canine Good Citizens, passing November 11th at Badger KC. The Canine Good Citizen test is for all dogs.

This daughter of CH. WHIPPOORWILL OVERTURE (himself an AWC Specialty Best in Sweepstakes back in 1984) started out by going Best in Sweepstakes at the 1988 National Specialty.

Since finishing earlier in 1989, she has won several major Breeds (including two AWC supported entries) and a Hound Group, taking over where her equally successful litter sister CH. SURREY HILL'S CELEBRATION (also owned by Whippoorwill) left off.

These bitches are from Overture's first - and only adult - litter and were co-bred by Whippoorwill and Surrey Hill.

This daughter of AWC Specialty BIS winner CH. WHIPPOORWILL BOHEM ARIA, "Cheers" made us proud this year by going Best in Sweepstakes at the AWC Midwest Specialty under breeder-judge Pat Pettit (above). Since then Cheers has also won a 4-point major at an AWC supported show and now has 7 points.

We hope she will carry on the winning tradition of her dam, her AWC Specialty BIS granddam CH. WHIPPOORWILL PRECIOUS GEM and her All-Breed BIS great-granddam CH. LADY BLAIR OF WHIPPOORWILL. She is sired by Ch. Bohem American Way and bred by Bo Bengtson.

The grandfather of both Liberty and Cheers, English import CH. HARDKNOTT MAESTRO OF BOHEM, is at stud at Whippoorwill. He has so far sired 21 AKC champions from his first 15 litters - not counting several overseas and Canadian champions, field champions and obedience titled get.

During the past six years, in spite of little breeding and even less showing, ten different Whippets carrying the Bohem prefix have won at least 25 major awards* where the competition is steepest — at the AWC specialty weekends and supported shows.

Since we can't be out there showing as much as we'd like to, much of the credit goes to the owners, co-owners and handlers who have been responsible for this success.

After two years of no breeding at all, we are hoping for a litter in 1990. From the last litter bred here, all seven are shown, two finished and others are close at 18 months. Inquiries from show homes where the puppies will be treated as family members are invited.

Unfortunately we can't do much racing these days. In the 1960s and 1970s, Bohem stud dogs sired the top racing Whippets in Scandinavia, but now our dogs mostly have to be content chasing seagulls on the beach (and the occasional cat). Some of our breeding would make good dual purpose stock, however, and we'd like to encourage racing/coursing activity in our puppy buyers.

AWC EASTERN SPECIALTY

1989 was once again a great year for the Eastern Region. We had a full compliment of supported entries repre­senting the entire region. These were Champlain Valley KC in Vermont, Delaware Valley KC in Pennsylvania, Mispillion KC in Delaware and Somerset Hills KC in New Jersey.

The Eastern Specialty was held with the Huntingdon Valley KC in Ambler PX on June 3, 1989. Mr. Espen Engh of Norway was Breed judge and Mr. David Hintson judged the Sweepstakes. There were a total of 242 whippets entered - 178 in Breed and 65 in Sweepstakes. Mr. Tom Partis was enlisted to judge Mr. Engh's overload.

Another daughter, Wolfram's C My Halo Dragon, pictured below with her friend, Mark Callahan and Judge Isabell Speight, has multiple Reserves from the Puppy Class, including two Major Reserves. "Lizzie" will be shown in Bred By Exhibitor under breeder judges, otherwise look for her in Open Classes.

AMERICAN WHIPPET CLUB

REGISTER OF MERIT

In 1988 the American Whippet Club initiated the Register of Merit for influential sires and dams.

Upon application, AWC will grant the title "Register of Merit" (ROM, to be used after the dog's registered name) to any Whippet sire whose offspring have earned a minimum of 15 AKC champion and/or ARM titles, and to any Whippet dam whose offspring have earned a minimum of 5 AKC champion and/or ARM titles.

Furthermore, the title "Register of Merit - Excellent" (ROM-X) can be granted to any Whippet sire whose offspring have earned a minimum of 25 AKC champion and/or ARM titles, and to any Whippet dam whose offspring have earned a minimum of 10 AKC champion and/or ARM titles.

A certificate of merit will be awarded to the owners of sires and dams which qualify for the award, and who have applied for it. The presentation will take place during the AWC National Specialty celebrations, with the certificate being mailed to those who cannot be present.

A list of sires and dams which qualified for the ROM up to 1987 was published in AWC's 1988 Annual Whippet News (pages 39-41). The first ROM presentation took place at the 1989 AWC National Specialty in Dallas, with the following Whippets being awarded their certificates:
