1988 American Whippet Club Whippet Annual Pages 152 through 176
My primary goal of preserving an exceptional intelligence and temperament was successful in the breeding of Whynot Sidhe's Soxy Lady, CD to Can.Ch. Swiftsure Wishful Thinking, AmCanFCh., ARM, ORC. The bonus has been that all are exceptional lure coursers. In 1988, in 24 trials, they racked up 18 firsts, 11 Best of Breeds, and 6 Best in Fields, earning the label "Cleanup Litter" from fellow competitors. The litter consists of: Attractive Nuisance, FCh - "Citizen Ant" It's been so much fun lure coursing that it's been hard to work at obedience, but each one has excelled in class and will be in the novice ring in 1989; two have also started tracking. I will continue to strive for the all-around whippet. Being good at one thing is not enough. As Robert Heinlein said, specialization is for insects. (Ch. Delacreme de la Renta x Ch. Saxon Shore Flash Dance) Following Santa Barbara, with both majors and 9 points, "Maxine" decided to take a rest with her furry friend, "Turkey Tracks", and wait for the Spring shows to complete her title. Watch for her later on in the field as well - she's showing great intensity and lots of speed in schooling runs. Sun Run J.P. and Sally deBeque Smith 250 Weld Co., Rd. #3, Erie, CO 80516 (303)666-9614
(Ch. Plumcreek Chase Manhattan, CD x Ch. Rafina Rhianda of Kamara) Aptly named for the spanish word "to hunt" or "to chase", "CAZA" has performed as well in the field as she has in the ring, making her a multiple Best of Breed winner - both places. She will be bred to CH. DELACREME DE LA RENTA for an early spring litter. Inquiries invited. Sun Run J.P. and Sally deBeque Smith 250 Weld Co. Rd. #3, Erie, CO 80516 (303)666-9614
In limited showing since his lure coursing accident, Cabin picked up his finishing major by going Best of Winners for 4 points at Whidbey Island Kennel Club show. Cabin had a lure coursing accident two years ago which severed his tendon. He was in the Lure Coursing Top Ten for 1986, ending the year as #7. After considerable physical therapy, I was convinced that he would never finish his bench title. This past spring, a friend asked if she could show Cabin. She said that he could finish, so, reluctantly, I let her show him. He placed second in a large Open class that day. Five shows later, we have that elusive major. Thank you Cecilia. Cabin has retired from the show ring now, but makes an occasional appear ance at the straight races. He doesn't like being left at home while his daughter gets to the race, but he is enjoying his retirement.

Capella started her show career with a major win from the Puppy class at the Seattle Kennel Club. Also as a puppy, she earned her Canadian championship by taking a Best of Breed and three Puppy Hound Groups. Before she was a year of age, Capella won a second major, and currently has nine points total towards her AKC title. Continuing the tradition of the dual purpose dog, Capella has proven to be quite the runner. She is pointed in ASFA lure coursing. Her first time out in Canada, she got second in a double stake run. At the NAWARA races, Capella finished as a Grade B racer first time entered. Capella is following in the footsteps of her father as a dual purpose whippet.

WESTERN REGIONAL SPECIALTY The Western Sighthound Combined Specialties, under the presidency of Mrs. Joan Frailey, held their 9th annual independent specialties on Friday, July 29, 1988, on Robertson Field - the setting for the Santa Barbara KC show held on Sunday. This club, founded on the idea of holding specialties for all the sighthound breeds under the umbrella title WSCS, is growing in number of clubs and activities each year. The Western AWC Specialty is held with WSCS. Whippets had an all-time West Coast record in Sweepstakes classes of 80, judged by the well-known breeder of Storm Hill Afghans, Mrs. Sandy Frei. Her Best in Sweeps was owner/breeder handled by Daniel Lockhart, 9-12 mo. bitch Saxon Shores Flashback (who, much to Mrs. Frei's judging expertise, was also WB in the regular classes at the Specialty). Her BOS Sweeps, who came from the 6-9 mo. puppy dog class, was Runner's Classic Continental, owned by Carolyn and Gene Darby of Colorado. Regular classes drew an overload for judge Mrs. Michele Billings at 189, so Mrs. Barbara Rupert judged Veterans and baby puppies. The Breed again went to an owner/breeder handled dog, Sandi Rolfe's young brindle & white male, Ch. Legacy's The Heat Is On. BOW was 9-12 mo. puppy dog Saxon Shore's Flash Point - littermate to WB and the same sire as BOB and BOS! Another outstanding added attraction that must be mentioned was the "Parade of Past Winners". This is for dogs of the past who have been winners of this weekend and are not entered on that day. This year the Whippets were represented by three well-known dogs - 1981 Specialty winner, Ch. Terrace Hill's Black Lace, last year's Breed winner, Ch. Whippoorwill Bohem Aria, and BIS and 1980 Specialty winner, Ch. Runner's He's The Continental, who won ,the Breed at Santa Barbara from the Veteran Class this year. The 1989 AWC Specialty will again be held with WSCS , on July 28 at the San Luis Obisbo KC show site. The Regular Classes will be judged by Mrs. Betty Stites, with Sweepstakes judged by Mrs. Cathy Gaidos. Following the Specialty on Friday will be the Lompoc KC show on Saturday and San Luis Obisbo KC on Sunday, all at the same show site. So, even though we have a change of location, be sure to pack your bathing suit, suntan oil and, of course, the dogs and head for a wonderful dog show vacation weekend.
