1987 American Whippet Club Whippet Annual Pages 98 through 129 LOOKING BACK . . . PAST A.W.C. SPECIALTIES By Bo Bengtson The American Whippet Club has held a total of 117 specialty shows since 1931, when the club was founded. That's a lot of shows, and perhaps this is the one reason that the collected records of the AWC specialties have never before been published. During 1987, the AWC Board asked me to collect whatever data might be available, and on the following pages are listed the major awards from all these specialties and photographs of as many of the Breed winners as we could find. Thanks are due the the American Kennel Club library's director Roberta Vesley, who found and photocopied all the appropriate pages from old AKC Gazettes; to Santa Barbara Kennel Club for providing marked catalogs of the west coast specialties held with their all—breed show in the 1960s and 1970s; to Wendy Clark for allowing enough space for all this informaion in the Annual; and also to the many owners and judges who responded to my request for photographs. The fact that these results come from different sources is the reason that the information might vary a little from show to show. For instance, in some cases I know only number of dogs entered and for others the number shown, which isn't necessarily the same thing. Any mistakes will be corrected in next year's AWC Annual if details are sent to me at P.O. Box 30430, Santa Barbara, CA 93130. The average number of shows held by the AWC over the past half century or so is almost exactly two per year. As we all know, AWC now hosts four regional and one national specialty each year, but in the beginning there wasn't even necessarily one show per year. Entries have increased even more than the number of shows, however — an average AWC specialty today has about ten times as many Whippets in the ring as would have been normal in the 1930s and 1940s. Exact figures were not published in the AKC Gazette until the late 1940s, and it is interesting to follow how the entries gradually reach today's size.
1984 AWC Western Specialty The first known AWC entry total consisted of 25 dogs in 1947; the next year that increased to 37, in 1951 to 40 and in 1952 to 60 dogs — and that figure was not surpassed until 1957 when our present AWC President Mrs. P.S.P. Fell judged an entry of 63 Whippets at the specialty in New Jersey. Four years later the late Mr. James A. Farrell (best known for the Foxden Greyhounds and Terriers still shown by his wife) judged a new record of 79 whippets in Pennsylvania . This figure was not exceeded until 1969, when the three—figure barrier was broken for the first time: at the fast—expanding Western specialty that year under Mrs. Cynthia Schmick there were 106 Whippets entered. Mrs. Schmick retired from judging in the 1970s when her husband became an AKC director, but is now back in the center of the ring again. In 1970 the Santa Barbara specialty had 115 Whippets entered while in the east the entry consisted of 113 dogs present and competing, most likely making this a new record. The Midwest specialty in Ravenna three years later also had exactly 113 Whippets competing — and coincidentally both these shows also had the same judge, Mrs. Christine Cormany, whose connections with the breed through her father James Young go back at least to the turn of the century. Mrs. Cormany is still active as a breeder with a new 1987 litter on the way. The Midwest specialty set a new all—time record in 1975 when judge Isabell Stoffers Speight pulled an entry of 124 exhibits; Santa Barbara came back with 135 entered in 1976 for Anne Rogers Clark, and in 1977 at this show Whippets for the first time ever exceeded the 175—dog limit allowed per judge by AKC: 181 were entered, necessitating a substitute judge for some of the classes. This happened again at the Midwest specialty in 1981 when Anthony Gutilla had a then—record entry of 216 Whippets. In 1982 the entry increased to 221 and two judges have regularly been employed at this show ever since: there were 253 entered in 1984 for the "two Carols" — Willumsen and Curry — and 281 in 1985 for Brian Doherty from Australia and Jean Ueltschy, and there remains the regional AWC record. In 1987 our first truly national specialty show pulled the incredible total of 340 Whippets (possibly a world record) making over 500 entries, with exactly 283 of them actually present and competing in the comformation classes according to the AKC Show Awards. (An additional ten were shown in obedience only.) Our Best of Breed judge Mrs. Wear had been announced as the sole judge, but had to be assisted by Betty Stites who took over the overflow classes. The presently clear distinctions between different regional specialties in the East, West, Midwest and South were not at all as pronounced in the beginning. AWC started out almost as a private club, with a very small membership, a very slow turnover of officers, and a definite emphasis on a small area in the East, where all the specialties for the club's first 23 years were held. Not until 1954 did AWC go "outside", hosting the first West Coast specialty in San Mateo in northern California. A few years later this show moved down the coast to Santa Barbara and has been there virtually every year since then; the main change occurred in 1980 when AWC "went independent" and started to hold the specialty on a different day from the all—breed show, but still in the same place and during the same weekend. The Midwest specialty was first held in 1956 in Chicago, and remained there for many years before moving to its present area in 1972 — first being held with Ravenna KC, then with Chagrin Valley KC for a couple of years, and since 1976 with Western Reserve KC — all during the same weekend, however, and to ever—increasing entries. Although occasional AWC specialties had been held as far south as in Keswick , Virginia in the 1960s and in St. Louis, Missouri in 1971, it was not until 1985 that a regular, separate southern specialty became a reality. Now in its fourth year, it is held with the Classic City KC in Marietta, Georgia and looks like becoming a popular and permanent fixture in AWC's calendar. Few other parent breed clubs hold as many shows per year as AWC does now (most have only one national specialty and possibly an additional and usually roving regional specialty), but on the other hand, almost no other breed as popular as the Whippet has so few other specialty—holding clubs: in addition to AWC's five annual events there is only one other Whippet specialty, organized by the Southern California Whippet Association in the Los Angeles area in January each year since 1984. On the other hand, the AWC policy of granting "supported show" status to a dozen or so all—breed clubs in different areas each year probably serves just about the same purpose as the dozens of local specialties do in other breeds — while at the same time preserving the prestige and uniqueness of the official AWC specialties. Needless to say, many regional Whippet clubs also do a great job in supporting entries at various all—breed shows in their own areas. The names of the specialty judges make fascinating reading for anyone who has been around dog shows for a while. Many of the great old all—rounders, and even more of the important "foundation breeders", are included — many of them fortunately still actively involved as breeders, exhibitors and/or judges. When Mrs. W.P. Wear (Stoney Meadows) judged the National Specialty in 1987, it was the seventh time she judged for the club since 1964, while the other of our breed's two most successful and experienced breeders, Mrs. Margaret P. Newcombe (Pennyworth) has judged six AWC specialties since 1961. The late Donald Hostetter (O'Lazeland) officiated at no less than five AWC specialties between 1941 and 1962, as did legendary all—rounder Alva Rosenberg between 1935 and 1969. Harry T. Peters of the Windholme Greyhounds (and sometimes Whippets) judged four times between 1957 and 1980, and Norman W. Ellis (Madcap) has also judged four times between 1972 and 1987. Betty Fell (Badgewood) judged four times between 1957 and 1980. Those who judged three AWC specialties were the late Mr. W.S. Schmick ( Caledonia) and the previously mentioned Mrs. Christine Cormany (Strathoak). Two—time AWC judges are the following: Mr. A.E. Stone in the 1930s, Mr. J.F. Farrell (Foxden) before 1961, Miss F.J. Shearer (Meander), William Brainard (Downsbragh Greyhounds), Marian Woodcock (Suntan), the late all—rounder Percy Roberts, Ann Gallup Marsh (Gallways), Anne Rogers Clark (Rimskittle, best known for Poodles but also breeding Whippets), Isabell Stoffers Speight (Runner's), Gayle Bontecou (Gaylewards Scottish Deerhounds), John Shelton (Sheridan), Larry T. Shaw (Kirklea), Bo Bengtson (Bohem), Carol Willumsen (Willcare), and Betty Stites (Hullabaloo). Top exhibitor at the specialties is still Meander kennels: the Shearer sisters took home nine AWC Breed wins between 1931 and 1959 — a tenth if you count Meander Liat O'Lazeland who was owned by Donald Hostetter. The Pennyworth and Stoney Meadows establishments have impressive records also: Mrs. Newcombe has so far won six AWC specialties with four different dogs, and Mrs. Wear has to date taken five AWC specialties with four dogs (and three more carry her prefix, but were owned by other exhibitors). Several other kennels have had three or four wins. The outstanding individual winners are three Whippets which won four AWC specialties each — an amazing record by any standard. The first was the bitch Ch. Eyleland Winter Wind between 1961 and 1963; the second was Ch. Gold—Dust's Twenty Four Karat who achieved the same record in the even more competitive period during 1976-1977; and the third is Ch. OBailee's Brittania who set a new record for Whippet males by winning four times between 1983 and 1986. Three other Whippets won three times each: Ch. Pennyworth Mother Goose in the late 1960s, Ch. Winterfold's Bold Bid between 1969 and 1972, and the all—time top sire Ch. Misty Moor's Chalmondoley in 1974 and 1975. Two—time AWC winners: Ch. Nimbus of Meander (1930s), Ch. Salvage of Meander (1940s), Ch. Stoney Meadows Masquerade, Ch. Garden City's Sleepy Mouse, Ch. Meander Bob White and Ch. Great Circle Holiday in the 1950s; Ch. Madcap Syndicated News in the 1960s; Ch. Pathen's Sasha of Carob and Ch. Mare's Head Royal Blu Princess in the 1970s; while the amazing Ch. Hollypark Honey Bee won her first AWC specialty as a youngster in 1969 and then repeated that win as a veteran ten years later, in 1979! The all—time top winning Whippet in BIS and Group competition, Ch. Sporting Fields Clansman, did almost the same thing, winning his first AWC specialty in 1978 and then coming back as a veteran to win again in 1984 (and still looking wonderful at the 1987 National Specialty where he won the Veterans class at almost 12 years of age). Finally, 1987 saw a young bitch win two AWC specialties in one year, Ch. Allerei's Ain't Misbehavin. As far as I can make out, the Best of Breed award has gone to a non— champion from the classes at least 15 times — more than once in every ten shows. Quite frequently the Winners Dog or Bitch have come from the puppy classes, but I can find only one occasion when a puppy has gone all the way to BOB — Stoney Meadows Hells Bells under Peggy Newcombe in 1962. Wins from the veterans classes have occurred a little more frequently: apart from the two mentioned above, Ch. Wilpat's Tafa of Excalibur won as a veteran under Norman Ellis in the Midwest 1972, and so did Ch. Plumcreek Chimney Swift when he won the record—breaking Midwest specialty in 1985. A lot of other deductions can no doubt be made from the specialty results, but I'll leave those to someone else. Finally a word about Sweepstakes: I have not managed to find out when they were first held, since they are unofficial and therefore not recorded by the AKC. They have been included in the 1987 details and will be part of the annual reports for coming years as well. — BO BENGTSON

This picture of the Specials class was taken at the AWC specialty held on September 8th, 1956 on the grounds of the Somerset Hills KC all-breed show in Far Hills, NJ. I can identify only some of the people, not all. Starting from left to right, I think the lady at the head of the line is Mrs. Theodore Pederson with the then famous Ch. Garden City Sleepy Mouse (I say "then famous" because the bitch either never had puppies or if she did, they all died or came to nothing, so this bitch does not show in any pedigrees today). I think the fourth lady bending over the dog and looking up at the camera is Mrs. George Anderson of the then-famous Mardormere kennels (again I say "then famous" because she kept a closed kennel and would neither sell her dogs nor accept any outside bitches for breeding). Following down the line, the lady in sixth position standing in the white kennel coat is Judith Shearer. I think the whippet (whose sex is not apparent) must be Ch. Meander Bob White. I think it is I bending over the black bitch next to Judith and the bitch would be Ch. Stoney Meadows Fairy Tale. The gentleman standing behind be is the judge, Mr. Ross Procter. The next person could be Peggy Newcombe and next to her is Barbara Eyles with Ch. Stoney Meadows Bedtime Story, who was the foundation of the Eyleland kennels.
