"Carlos" earned the Award of Racing Merit in 1987, finishing the year as the number 10 ranked NPR racer. He also earned his AKC Championship in 1987 with major wins under Betty Stites and Ann Gallup Marsh. In addition, Carlos has earned 9 Oval Racing Championship points in 1987, including a high score in meet at Delaware City. Carlos is truly a versatile Whippet with a dual—purpose pedigree.

1987 RACE PERFORMANCE SUMMARY By Doug Arthur A record 59 National Point Race Meets APRs) were conducted in 1987 breaking the previous number of 50 set in 1964. There were a total of 2226 adult entries for an average of 38 per meet. The July 4 NPR in Delaware City again drew the largest entry of 56. The popularity and continuous growth of the American Whippet Club's NPR Program can be seen from the following numbers;
During the past five years the total number of NPRs increased from 43 to 59, with the number of adult entries growing 22% from 1820 to 2228. A geographic comparison of total NPRs follows;
After being "bridesmaid" to Lyth Satus, ARM, CRC, F.Ch. the past two years, Marial's Whitewater, ARM, ORC, bred and owned by Doug and Mary Beth Arthur and Bernice Strauss of Wisconsin finished number one in national NPR points in 1987. 'Bonzo" placed Just ahead of Lyth York, ARM, ARC. injuries plagued each of the major players in the quest for top NPR racer for 1987. Defending champion Satus suffered a fractured hock at the July Suisan NPR which may have ended a brilliant career at the age of four. A late finisher hit Whitewater in a kidney at the June Hamilton NPR, resulting in trauma and a two-month recuperation period. York, who led in national points For most of toe year. suffered a serious injury in a domestic mishap in October, preventing him -from competing effectively at the end of the year. 'Bonzo' won 13 of 17 NPRs in 1987, losing only to York and half-brother, Swiftsure Luke's Jayson, ARM. He won the first ever AWC "National" NPR held in conjunction with the first Annual AWC National Specialty in Columbus, Ohio in April. "Bonzo" is now third in all- time NPR meet wins and all-time NPR National Points behind Satus and Janie's John Boy da Toro, ARM, ORC, F.Ch. The standout race litter for 1987 was bred by Tony Lewis of Washington. The puppies sired by Lyth Djon, ARM, ORC out of WRs Crystal Summer Energy, F.Ch.,CC,CM resulted in six ARMs; Lyth York, ARM,ORC, Lyth Davy, ARM,ORC, Lyth Hern, ARM,ORC, Lyth Hal, ARM,ORC, Lyth Ely, ARM,CM, and Lyth Windle, ARM. Another of Whitewater's half-brothers, Ch, Marial's Monte Carlo, ARM, bred and owned by Doug & Mary Beth Arthur and Bernice Strauss of Wisconsin, was the top-ranked dual-purpose Whippet for 1987. Monte Carlo finished both his ARM and AKC Bench Championship titles as well as earning nine ORC points In 1987. He won the Bred-by-Exhibitor class at the April AWC National Specialty in Columbus, Ohio. Monte Carlo becomes the sixth Marial dual-champion, the previous five being: Ch. Marial's Jellybean, C.D., ARM (1988), Cn. Marial's Traymatt Snow Man, C.D., ARM (1973), Ch. Maria l ' s Tinsel, C.D., ARM (1977), Ch. Marial's Memphis, ARM (1978) and Ch. Marial's Padneyhill Illusion, C.D., ARM (1978). NPR Wins The fastest unofficial times recorded for the 200 yard distance were; 11.1 -York (Hamilton, Ohio), 11.2 - Whitewater (Antioch, Illinois and Hamilton, Ohio), 11.2 - Satus (Burnaby, B.C.), 11.2 - Shady Character (Burnaby, B.C.), 11.3 - Kern (Antioch, Illinois), and 11.4 - Quorn "Burnaby, B.C.). Seventeen Whippets won NPRs in 1987;

Satus appears in the top ten for the fourth straight year. Whitewater and Robin Banks appear for the third consecutive year. York, Shady Character and Horn are repeaters from last year. According to his owner "Bonzo can best be described by one word--determination all the nece ssa ry ingredients went into his successful performance; 1) bloodlines, 2) physical attributes, 3) 11.4 speed, 4) quick acceleration, 5) intense confidence and desire, 6) good track sense, 7) controlled conditioning program, 8) proper diet/weight control, 9) parasite control and 10) luck!' York has good racing sense and is an excellent breaker and is able to display great acceleration." LYTH DAVY, ARM, ORC (Lyth Djon, ARM, ORC x WRs Crystal Summer Energy, F.Ch., CC, CM; whelped 5/29/85; bred by C.A. Lewis of Washington and owned by David Gutierrez of California; "Bolo" is a solid red brindle male standing 22" and weighing 42 ins; also completed his ORC in 1987; has lure coursed once, taking first place and Best of Breed; he is obedience trained and has some protective training; according to his owner "Bolo 15 very good around the house and would rather be a couch potato than train. He generally breaks bad in three out of tour races in an NPR out usually breaks better on the oval." SHADY CHARACTER, ARM ;Tom Terrific, ORC a Lyth Watney) whelped 2/22/85 bred by Janet Stigum of Washington and owned by Tim and Betsy Mosier of Washington; "Shady" is a white and fawn male standing 22" and weighing 41 lds; according to his owners "Shady was slow to mature. His first experience at an NPR he ran as the test dog and came out backwards, one month later he ran in his first NPR and beat National Champion Satus in the third high point program. He still has a long way to go but we're looking forward to future race seasons." WINSOME (Lyth Jasper, ARM, F.Ch. x WRs Crystal Summer Energy, F.Ch., CM, CC; whelped 6/14/84, bred and owned by David H. dill of California; "Robin" is a fawn brindle female standing 20" and weighing 34 lbs; the top NPR race bitch for the third consecutive year; according to der owner "she receives a brisk 45 minute walk three to tour times weekly, during good weather. She has a very sweet personality as a pet and is very keen on the lure but backs off when aggressively fouled." (Ch. Whippletree's Raisin Cain x AmCanCh. Spectre White Hot) "Kiley" was shown to his title completely owner-handled, which included a BOS over several top ten Specials. He is a Canadian Puppy Group I winner. "Kiley" is owned by Karen Bowers and David Troutt.
(Ch. Whippletree's Raisin Cain x AmCanCh. Spectre White Hot) "Sissy" is a BlSweeps winner and a Specialty Best Puppy in Show winner. She's also a BOB from the classes winner, over 3 Specials.
(CanCh. Allerei's Cabin Fever, LCM x Ch. Spectre Chalcedony) "Whitney" finished in 2 1/2 months, shown only 12 times in Open, with three 4-point majors and one 3-point major in stiff California competition. She is a multiple Breed winner and has always placed in the Group.
"Colby" has had a phenomenal show career to date. He went BlSweeps at his first show at 6 months, 1 week old. He then visited Canada and picked up 2 Puppy Groups I's and 1 BEST PUPPY IN SHOW. After a brief rest, he won the 1986 AWC Western Specialty BlSweeps over 70+ puppies. He was WD (2 days later) at the prestigious Santa Barbara KC. He was only shown in Open 10 times and finished with Multiple Breeds from the classes with a GROUP IV and GROUP I. "Colby" is a winner in every way!
