REPORTS FROM THE RACING REGIONS
FROM JEAN BALINT, REGIONAL RACE COORDINATOR, WEST COAST. USA
At the conclusion of the 1986 race season, there was no doubt in anyone's mind who was top dog for the year. Once again, Satus came out Number One not only on the West Coast, but also in the nation. This is the third consecutive year that this outstanding racer has achieved racing's highest award. Also having a fantastic year and finishing Top Bitch in the nation for the second consecutive year was Robin Banks. She ended the year on a high note by winning the last meet for 1986. Congratulations to the owners of these two very fine racers.
Again we had a long, tough and highly competitive race season. There were 13 meets in California and 3 in Washington. Winning 14 of these meets and proving that he is undoubtedly the nation's top racer was Satus. Compiling an average for dogs who competed in 8 or more complete meets, the top five racers in the West Coast Region were: Satus, Robin Banks, Jackpot, Djon and Jolly Jack.
These dogs certainly did their owners proud.
I would like to welcome the Western Washington Whippet Association, now approved for National Point Racing. Their practice meet was highly successful and received many compliments. They will be hosting their first meet later this year.
As the race calendar indicates, it's going to be another full and busy year. I Would like to wish all participants good luck and good fun. Let's hope that 1987 will be remembered as a year in which we all truly enjoyed this great sport of Whippet racing.

FROM CINDY SCHMIDT ....... AN EAST COAST RACE REPORT
All of us here on the East Coast will remember 1986 for the many new experiences the year brought to us. For the first time, eight race meets were held within a reasonable drive of most of the club's members — the Eastern Whippet Association grounds in Bridgewater, New Jersey are only about two hours away from the Jersey Rag Racers' grounds at the Governor Bacon Health Center in Delaware City, Delaware. NOTRA racing also was introduced; two U—ovals were held, with full rosters of 48 entries for each.
The EWA again hosted an NPR in conjunction with the Eastern Regional Specialty of the American Whippet Club. The AWC generously offered medallions to each Whippet who showed at the Specialty and also ran four clean heats at the NPR, and a special trophy to the highest placing AKC Champion of Record. This was won by Ch. Texas Contender of Wyndsor, ARM, who finished 2nd overall to Marial's Whitewater, ARM. Unfortunately, the lack of interest in racing by show people (outside the core of EWA/JRR members) and in showing by race people was high—lighted by the fact that a mere 15 Whippets out of the more than 100 entered at the Specialty also participated in the NPR.
The next major event on the calendar was the July 4th "Three—Day Event" sponsored by the Jersey Rag Racers. Day One consisted of a specialty lure course, followed by a fun match. Saturday's main attraction was an NPR meet. With an entry of 66 adults, this was one of the largest NPR's held in 1986. Hi—point was Ch. Texas Contender of Wyndsor, ARM, and in a taste of things to come, Hamlin's Pogo del Allegro tied for hi—point puppy with Captain Elijah of Brewster. The grand finale was the introduction of NOTRA racing to the East; quite a few of the participants from the field trial stayed on for all three days.
After all the excitement in June and the early part of July, all of us took a breather with an "ordinary" NPR in July, followed by the onslought of a back—to back weekend in early August. Then in another effort to involve racing people in showing and show people in racing, the Atlantic Whippet Association supported the entry at Somerset Hills Kennel Club at the Bridgewater grounds the day before an EWA NPR. The show results were a vindication of our effort: Ch Sundance At Best Run'N Free ARM was Best of Breed, his son Morshor's Speed to Spare was Winners Dog and several other "race" dogs won or placed in their classes. AWC again donated medallions for dual purpose dogs.
The year drew to a close with another NOTRA/NPR weekend. A new star blazed at the NPR, with top honors going to Hamlin's Pogo del Allegro running the first time as an adult.

- 5 ARM points Burlington, IA 8/85
- 4 ARM points Antioch, IL 8/85
- 3 ARM points Delaware City, DE 10/85

"Sky" wishes to congratulate her littermates "Tank" and "Katy" on their 1986 accomplishments.
"Katy" — Rialcel's Allegro Prelude, owner — Meg Glenn, earned her Field Championship in early 1986 and went on to earn an LCM later that summer. "Katy" is also bench pointed.
"Tank" — Rialcel's On The Road Again, owners — Pam, Kathy and Tim LeClair, has 6 ARM points to his credit from the 1986 race calendar.
This truly is an example of an all purpose litter, competitive in show, race and soon "Sky" will be shown in the obedience ring. Thanks to Pam LeClair for breeding a fine litter that are friends and companions too.
"Sky" also sends special congratulations to her best beau, "Heathcliff", on his ARM, too.

NOTRA Oval Racing continued to expand in 19:36. This year 21 regional clubs hosted 41 Whippet meets with 1293 starters in 8 states and 2 provinces of Canada and 10 meets which included 84 starters of other breeds. Afghan Hounds, Borzoi, Greyhounds, Ibizan Hounds, and Scottish Deerhounds ran in Official meeets this year in addition to Whippets. As usual drag-lure tracks of 220 meters (243 yards) arid 350 meters (385 y ards) were used, and also rail-lure tracks where races of 300 to 440 yards were run.
Fifteen different Whippets won meets this year. Those who won more than one meet were:
LYTH SATUS, ARM ORC (16)
LYTH YORK, ARM ORC (5) JANIES JOHN BOY DA TORO, ARM ORC (5) REGALSTOCK LYTH ROUTER, ARM ORC (2) CHAPARRALS BARJE JIGOLO, ARM ORC (2) MARIAL'S WHITEWATER, ARM ORC (2).
The 1986 Whippet National Oval Racing Champion is once again Tony and Karen Lewis' great racer LYTH SATUS, ARM ORC. This is the 3rd year he has won the National Championship, the only racer ever to win more than once. He is now the all-time top NOTRA Oval racer. Connie and Jack Eaker's LYTH YORK, ARM ORC appeared on the oval tracks in the second half of the year running powerful races and Tom Yeager's JANIES JOHN BOY DA TORO, ARM ORC was strong during the middle months. They each won 5 meets, and ended the year tied for 2nd place in the National rankings, but far back of SATUS. There was a tie for 4th place between Dave arid Annette Rosenstock's REGALSTOCK LYTH ROUTER, ARM ORC and the Eaker's CHAPARRALS BARJE JIGOLO, ARM ORC. Both of these racers appeared relatively infrequently, but made their presence felt.
The NOTRA "Triple Crown" perpetual trophy was also won by SATUS this year. He was the only dog to qualify for consideration. Qualification requires the winning of meets at 220 and 350 meters on a drag-lure track, and also winning a meet on a rail-lure track at 300 yards or more.

Batman enjoyed running both the track and lure courses this year. Finishing the year with two BOB's and a BIF, he is well on his way to his LCM. Marathon 's first year on the track was an outstanding one, finishing his ORC at 21 months of age. It's been a real thrill to watch him mature and grow stronger during the year, and we look forward to another super year in 1987. Our newest addition is Orion, another John Boy son. Now enjoying his half-brother's tutelage, he will be making his racing debut in 1987.

ROADHOUSE
Whippets
Last year, we introduced our CanCh. Wheeling Domino Theory. " Tulsa" is a beautiful example of the knowledge and love with which Paul and Jean Ueltschy breed and rear their strong line. We thank all of you who commented on " Tulsa's" portrait.
This year we would like to introduce you to some other members of our Whippet family.

SIRHAN FOOLISH FANCY
Our beloved "Rachel". She had just started on a promising career when a seriously broken forelimb left her pointed but unable to continue in the ring. Bred by Audrey and Julian Benbow, sired by AmCanCh. Bitterblue's Sure-Fire, FCh., litter brother to Prairie Fire, "Rachel" was bred to Tulsa and in January '86 they produced:
ROADHOUSE RICOCHET
In gleaming black and white, with eyes like coals, "Ali" has attracted favorable attention with but a few forays into the
ring. She has breeder-judge points, and
will be shown more seriously next year
with her co-owner Tracy Dineley, Clandega
|
ROADHOUSE REFLECTION
With her rich red brindle beauty, "Bridget" is a near double for her dam. "Bridget" has several match group wins under Sighthound breeders, and will be allowed to mature before serious exhibition begins. |
ROADHOUSE
Whippets
 |
ROADHOUSE GOLD RUSH
Dressed in pale gold and white, with his striking black eyes and black mask, "Silas" is breath-taking. Big, sound and strong, "Silas" is reluctantly offered for sale to the right show home, only because we are "male rich". |
 |
ROADHOUSE BLADE RUNNER
" Harrison" is glowing red-orange and white, and with his black mask and dark dancing eyes, he turns heads wherever he goes. In very limited showing, he is well pointed as a puppy. He is a totally capable Whippet. He will be shown lightly in '87. |
From the same litter, there is a black, irish marked male with a very classy look, Roadhouse Cannonball Run. He is owned by Mr.& Mrs. H. Shantz of Simcoe, Ontario and will be seen in the ring when mature.
Tulsa 's second litter is now here ex our Ch. Playboy's Porcelain, dam of Specialty win Champions. The male is owned by Bluevelvet Kennels, reg'd. One of the two bitches may be available.
The dams of Tulsa's two litters are not closely related, yet the puppies have a definite consistancy. We suspect that we have only scratched the surface of Tulsa's future importance to us. Thank you, Jean and Paul for allowing us the pleasure of his company. He is more than a "stud dog". He is our family pet (and Joan's faithful shadow).
