THE BRITISH COLUMBIA WHIPPET RACING CLUB

As another year of whippet activities comes to a close, we can look back with satisfaction on the increasing diversity that the hobby holds. The BCWRC is proud to have members that have competed with their whippets not only in NPR and NOTRA racing but in the conformation ring, obedience and lure coursing. We also have members that are participating in programs that enable them to visit the elderly in rest homes with their dogs.

Our own BCWRC NPR meets were once again dominated by the Lewis' incredible Lyth Satus, ARM, ORC. He was High Point Adult in our June NPR and also at our Double Header NPR's in August. Our final NPR in September was won by the upcoming youngster Shady Character, ARM, owned by the Mosier family. Our NOTRA meet in June was won by Ch. Sailaway Ode to Joy, FCh., owned by the Leinbach's. Please accept my thanks to all of you who travelled so far to support our events and for the good sportsmanship which made our race meets a pleasure to attend.

As many of you are aware, Expo 86 was a huge success and enabled us to renew friendships with whippet fanciers from all over North America. For those of you that missed the chance to visit us last year, be sure to make it up to Vancouver for the famous "Double Header" weekend traditionally held on the first weekend in August.

President, BCWRC

Can. Ch. Sailaway Ode to Joy, F.Ch.

(CanCh. Swiftsure Happy Daze, ARM, FCh x Sailaway Dream Weaver, CD, FCh)

JOY and her littermates have done well in their first adult year. JOY finished her Show Championship with four three—point wins, completed her Field Champion ship in three trials with two firsts and one second placement, and was High Score Adult at the BCWRC NOTRA meet in June.

SAILAWAY CITRONELLA, owned by Anne Caple, already has a Best of Breed and Group 3 to her credit, NOTRA top ten placement and a lure coursing BEST IN FIELD. SAILAWAY MAJOR MOTION, owned by Bill and Norinne Goring, has accumulated several points towards his Award of Racing Merit and is a strong NOTRA racer with placements in the top ten in meet.

SAILAWAY RED ALERT, ORC, owned by Fred and Jean Linz, completed his oval racing championship before his second birthday.

Our congratulations and gratitude goes to all their owners for loving these littermates and giving them the opportunity to make their breeders proud.

L.M.W.A. Annual Report . . 1986

Another year has almost come to an end. As usual, there have been victories and defeats, happy and sad moments for all of us.

Events sponsored by the Lower Mainland Whippet Association were numerous and successful. We held a total of seven all breed lure course trials. There were excellent whippet entries at all of these.

Our first three trials of the year were held the end of March. There were three stakes of whippets the first day. B.O.B. and B.I.F. went to Hekla Genesis; winners of the other two stakes were Sailaway Ode To Joy and Bold As Brass Of Course, FCh. Honours the second day went to Joy, Ragtime Shaman and Ch Sparkle Plenty Of Course, CD. Sparkle took B.O.B. and went on to B.I.F. There were two stakes on the last day. CanAmCh Swiftsure Phlashback, AmFCh, CanFChX was first in one stake; Regalstock Zenobia placed first in the other and was B.O.B.

We held two trials in April. On the first day there was a double stake, with Hekla Salome taking first in one stake and Joy going first, B.O.B. and B.I.F. The second day Salome went B.O.B.

Our last set of trials were held October 4 & 5. In the double stake the first day, first in stake 'A' was Phlashback, while 'B' went to Sparkle, who went on to B.O.B. and B.I.F. The second day Joy's sister Sailaway Citronella took B.O.B. & B.I.F.

We held our Whippet Specialty Show this year in conjunction with the EXPO 86 Dog Show extravaganza. Sweeps, judged by Mr Richard Webster (Urray Kennels) was won by Ch Banner's Dot West. Regular classes were judged by Mr Guy Mansenal of France. Winner Male was Little River Dandy Don, who went on to B.O.B. Winners Female was Hekla Genesis, B.O.S. Ch Neneveh Royal Denby, while Swiftsure Rainbow Warrior was Best Puppy. Best Brace went to Ragtime Witch Doctor and Ch Ragtime Shaman, Stud and Get was won by Ch Ragtime Talisman, CD and Dam and Progeny by Ch Swiftsure Ragtime Galatea, CanAmCD, CanAmFCh. Both unofficial classes — Field Champion and ARM/ORC Pointed were won by Ch Sparkle Plenty Of Course, CD, FCh.

Members' whippets achieved a number of accomplishments and acquired many new titles during 1986. Early in the year, Ann Webster's greyhound Shebah (Ch Windwood Vanity Fair, CC, CanFChX, AmFCh) got her last leg towards her CD. She also placed in the top 10 in the Grand Course, the first time ever for a Canadian dog. Steve and Linda Buchholz's handsome young male CanAmCh Swiftsure Phlashback, CanAmFCh added yet another title to his already lengthy list when, this spring, he completed his CanFCh Excellent. Ann Webster's Regalstock Zenobia finished her FCh, ad did the 'terrible trio' of greyhounds, Blaze, Angel and E.V.G. Jim and Bonny Goebel's young whippet Favorit Pegasus At Ragtime completed his FCh at 14 months of age. Hekla Genesis (Jenny), owned by Clint and Erin Moore, completed her bench Championship in fine style, going Winners Female at our Specialty show in June. In September, Goebel's Ragtime Witch Doctor finished in the ring, as did their male 'Wings' (Pegasus', giving the area yet another dual titled whippet. Buchholz's 'Raven' (Swiftsure Nickel Pipedream, ARM) added a bench Ch to her accomplishments over the summer, and in September when Linda and Bonny traveled to Vernon, BC, 'Diva' (Swiftsure Double Feature) bred and co—owned by Linda, finished her bench Ch, as did her sister Citabria, who finished with a Group First over top sighthounds, including her brother Phlashback. November is rather late in the season for a Lurecourse trial in British Columbia , but the frigid wind didn't seem to bother Moore's 'Jenny', who completed her FCh then. Jenny is one of an ever increasing number of fine dual purpose whippets sired by Ch Swiftsure Happy Daze, CanAmFCh, ARM — 'Mack', who also sired Joy, Phlashback, Salome, Citronella, Diva and Citabria.

Seeing the offspring of our loved old ones continue in their footsteps softens our sorrow a little when death finally comes. Steve and Linda Buchholz lost Swiftsure's foundation bitch to old age late this fall. All who knew 'Daisy' (Ch Sonny Daze Of Course, CanAmFCh) are saddened to hear of her passing. There'll never be another quite like her, but through Mack, Gala and Daisy's other children and grand-children, some of her still remains. In September, Ann Webster's little black bitch, 'Spook' (Eyleland Windwood Voodoo, CanAmFCh) sucumbed to cancer at the age of 13 years. For the past two years Spook had spred joy in Adult Care centres and Senior Citizens Homes. Her friendly, sweet ways are sadly missed here at Windwood.

Canine activities drew to a close here in the Northwest with three all breed shows in Vancouver the end of November. The Lower Mainland Whippet Ass'n sponsored a Booster at this show. Winners Dog was Chelsea Cayenne, who completed his title this day in grand style, going B.O.B. and Group Second. Winners Bitch, Sailaway Citronella, also completed her Championship then. Best Opposite Sex was Goebel's Ch Tory's Favorit Tasha, and Best Puppy went Alcyon Callme Flashdance, who continued on to Best Puppy in Group.

We eagerly look forward to whippet-y events in 1987. Already scheduled on our calendar are three all breed Lure Courses in March, and a most exciting Specialty Show to be judged (pending CKC approval) by the eminent whippet breeder and judge, Mr Richard Reynolds. This show, along with a Specialty Lure Course, will be held mid June. We hope whippet fanciers in the Northwest and across North America will join us in these events.

Sincerely,

E. Ann Webster

JAMEYFIELD'S TURBO CHARGE

Most dogs are near their Bench Championship or Field Championship, and are available for stud.

We have just acquired a very special dog... Locar's Spode, bred by Carol Curry. Spode is a full brother to Royal Doulton and has a best in sweeps under Mary Beth Arthur and reserves to majors with limited showing. We are looking forward to a great year, showing this excellent moving hound.

The members of the Western Washington Whippet Association are delighted to be included in this year's WHIPPET NEWS ANNUAL. Our club is located in Northwest Washington state and invites all western whippet fanciers to join us in 1987 for our varied activities and events.

In 1986, WWWA hosted four successful, all-breed ASFA lure trials. We try to bring out-of-area judges, as well as local judges, to evaluate our entries. This past year, we brought Patricia Gail Burnham from California, Emmett Roach from Colorado , and David Denis from British Columbia and attracted full stakes of Open and Field Champion whippets, as well as good entries of the other sighthound breeds.

A whippet specialty match was held in June and drew an entry of over 40 puppies and adults. Longtime whippet breeder and exhibitor, Cloyce Almonrode (Briarwyck/Breakaway) assessed the sweepstakes and awarded BlSweepstakes to the three-month old bitch, Allerei's Ain't Misbehavin' (Bowers). Noted greyhound breeder and whippet exhibitor, Barbara Reilly, judged the regular classes and awarded BIM to Christine Hopperstad's, Alcyon Cluny Brown. Best Puppy in Match went to the three month male, Allerei's the A Train (Simonsen). A highlight was the Parade of Champions, Veterens, and Titleholders. Fifteen member-owned whippets paraded and were toasted by their owners with sparkling cider, while the video camera rolled.

This year, the WWWA supported the entry at the Sammamish K.C. summer show. English breeder-judge, Robert James, officiated. BOB went to Kathy Davidson's Allerei's Run Wild.

The big news for 1986 was our NPR qualifying meet. WWWA thanks our racing friends from B.C., WA, and OR who showed up to provide their expertise and help us run the required number of dogs. High Point in Qualifying Meet went to the well-known, Regalstock Lyth Rogue ARM ORC (Rosenstock). Our 1987 official NPR dates have not been finalised, but racing fans wishing to be on our mailing list should write racing secretary, Janet Wayock ( P.O. Box 71, Lakewood, WA 98259)

WWWA began 1986 under the leadership of Si Simonsen, and ended the year under the presidency of Doris Ringer. As a club, we are proud of the accomplishments of our member-owned whippets and feel our 1986 titleholders reflect the diversity of achievement and interest within our club. New AKC champions in 1986 were Surrey Hill's Savannah (Bowers), Allerei's Run Wild (Davidson), and Allerei's Marguerita (Koler and Simonsen). New CKC bench champions were S.H. Savannah and Chelsea Cayenne (Bowers and Troutt). New ASFA F.Ch.'s were awarded to Blarneystone's Handmaiden (Pocrnich), Allerei's Fox Trot (Simonsen), and Am.Can.Ch. Surrey Hill's Houston. Two new LCM's were earned by member-owned dogs, the Emmrich's Snowbird Rosalie G.T. F.Ch. and Roberts and Simonsen's, Can.Ch. Allerei's Cabin Fever F.Ch. We are especially proud of the new UD title earned by Pat Younger's Am.Can.Ch. Rikki's Arrow F.Ch. Am.Can. CD, Am.Can.CDX (whew!). Congratulations to all and best wishes to whippet fanciers everywhere for a successful 1987!

The American Whippet Club
NATIONAL POINT RACING---AN ANNUAL REPORT-1986

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

1. WE HAD 49 NPR RACE MEETS IN 1986.

2. WE HAD ONE NPR RACE MEET CANCELED.

3. THE LARGEST MEET, (TOTAL NUMBER OF WHIPPETS RUN) WAS THE JERSEY RAG RACERS MEET ON JULY 5TH 74 ENTRIES 66 ADULTS, 8 PUPPIES. THE SECOND LARGEST MEET WAS NCWC, APRIL 19TH 71 ENTRIES 61 ADULTS, 10 PUPS. YOU WILL RECALL THAT WAS THE WEEK-END OF THE AMERICAN WHIPPET CLUB'S ANNUAL MEETING.

4. TOTAL WHIPPETS RUN = 2,021, OF WHICH 230 WERE PUPPIES. THAT AVERAGES 41.24 WHIPPETS PER MEET!

5. WE CALLED 23 ADULT FOULS, AND 6 PUPPY FOULS. THIS FIGURE IS DRASTICALLY HIGHER THAN LAST YEAR, AND SHOULD GET OUR ATTENTION. BACK TO THE BASICS!

6. WE RECOGNIZED TWO NEW CLUBS ELIGIBLE TO HAVE NPR MEETS THE BLUEGRASS WHIPPET CLUB AND THE WESTERN WASHINGTON WHI PPET ASSOCIATION.

7. WE AWARDED 17 AWARD OF RACING MERIT CERTIFICATES THIS YEAR. (NO ARM CHAMPION WHIPPETS EARNED AN AKC CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR.)

OVERALL, 1986 WAS A GOOD RACING YEAR. WE HAD SOME PROBLEMS, AND PROBABLY ALWAYS WILL! THE" BUZZ-WORD" FOR WHAT RECEIVED THE GREATEST ATTENTION WAS "MEASURING". AS MOST ARE AWARE, THE NPR RULES ARE IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REVISED, AND THIS TOPIC WILL GET MUCH CONSIDERATION. WE HOPE TO CLARIFY SOME THINGS ON "MEASURING" WITH BETTER WORDING, AND ILLUSTRATIONS AND/OR PICTURES.

THE BOARD HAS DIRECTED THIS OFFICE TO START USING THE AKC WICKET AS SOON, AND AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. THERE WILL BE MORE ON THIS LATER, WHEN COST FIGURES AND AVAILABILITY ARE DETERMINED. ALSO, WHILE ON THE SUBJECT OF RULE REVISIONS, THE PETITION ALLOWING SPAYED/NEUTERED WHIPPETS WAS APPROVED BY THE MEMBERSHIP: 163 FOR AND 57 AGAINST. THIS WILL NOW BE NOTED UNDER THE ELIGIBILITY SECTION, AND POLICY ON HOW THIS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON .................................................. IN THE AWC'S NEWSLETTER AND THROUGH NPR COMMUNICATIONS.

ANOTHER "BUZZ-WORD" TOPIC IN '86 WAS "GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP", OR LACK, THEREOF. MOST CLUBS HAVE SPECIAL RULES OF CONDUCT PRINTED IN THEIR PROGRAMS, AND PERHAPS IT WOULD BE WELL IF BEFORE OUR NEW RACING SEASON GETS UNDERWAY, WE RE-READ THOSE RULES OF CONDUCT. AND REMIND OURSELVES WHY WE "GATHER TOGETHER" ..................... FOR OUR COMMON
INTEREST, THE ENJOYMENT OF OUR WHIPPETS. WHETHER IT BE IN THE SHOW RING OR AT THE RACE SITE. A QUOTE FROM GRANTLAND RICE'S BOOK, ALUMNUS FOOTBALL. MIGHT BE APPROPRIATE: "WHEN THE ONE GREAT SCORER COMES TO WRITE AGAINST YOUR NAME-HE MARKS---NOT THAT YOU WON OR LOST---BUT HOW YOU PLAYED THE GAME."

WHAT'S AHEAD IN '87? A GRADING GUIDE THAT WILL BE QUICK!! OUR ATTEMPT AT A SPREAD SHEET WORKED, BUT WE FOUND IT NOT PRACTICAL. OUR COMPUTER EXPERT IS NOW IN SEARCH OF SOMETHING ELSE THAT WILL DO THE TASK AT A SPEEDIER RATE. TOO, FOR TRAINING NEW FOLKS TO RACING, AND AS A REFRESHER FOR THE REST, IT WOULD BE HELPFUL IF WE COULD PUT TOGETHER A VIDEO ON WHAT IS AND WHAT ISN'T A FOUL. THE STATISTICS ABOVE SHOW WHIPPETS AND OWNERS NEED WORK IN THIS AREA.

AN EVENT THAT'S AHEAD IN '87 IS OUR FIRST NATIONAL POINT RACE IN CONJUNCTION WITH AWC'S FIRST NATIONAL SPECIALTY! THE SEMINAR ON FRIDAY, APRIL 17TH, WILL DEVOTE THE MORNING SESSION TO RACING! WE INVITE YOU ALL TO ATTEND, AND THEN ON SUNDAY, APRIL 19TH, A "FOR REAL" NPR WILL TAKE PLACE! PLEASE WATCH FOR MORE DETAILS IN THE NEWSLETTER.
