American Whippet Club

FUTURITY

From the 5-7 month bitch class, High Flyer Glamorous Glennis, an irish marked brindle, (Ch. Plumcreek Walk On Water x Ch. Dunberry Arwen) bred by Erma & Ralph J. Kovach and Wendy Clark, won the third American Whippet Club futurity under judge Bo Bengtson (Bohem). The grand prize was $585, after winning $50 for first in her class, and a French hunt covered cassarole.

The futurity was held on Riddlefield on August 22 in Ravenna, Ohio. The outstanding catalog and pedigree supplement quickly sold out. First in every class won a signed and numbered Whippet print and first through fourth place received an AWC medallion.

A bountiful lunch was shared and enjoyed by exhibitors and spectators. After Best In Futurity was selected, there was an exhibition only maturity class. This class is for families comprised of consecutive generations.

My sincere gratitude to Phoebe Booth, the official photographer, to Juanita Irvin and Syl Rozny, the outstanding ring stewards without whom none of us would have survived the day, and to Pat Dresser who has been my futurity mentor.

FUTURITY CRITIQUE

by BO BENGTSON, Judge

Having had the pleasure of judging two different American Whippet Club specialties (Santa Barbara in 1979 and Ravenna in 1982) prior to this futurity, perhaps I may claim with some degree of certainty that it is much easier to judge adult, ring—ready Whippets in large numbers at a specialty than 130—plus puppies of widely varying age, quality and ring demeanor!

At an official AWC specialty, every exhibit is judged to a fixed standard, and provided that you have the required expertise it is really not that difficult to sift the wheat from the chaff. (It may take you a quarter of a century to acquire that expertise, but either you have it or you don't.) When judging puppies, a whole lot of other aspects come into it as well: the ability to look into a crystal ball and see the future is one of them, and that has never been one of my strongest points. Few breeds change as drastically as Whippets do when they grow up, and few breeds exhibit such distinctively different growth patterns as the various bloodlines of our breed seem to do. I would therefore heartily endorse what my predecessor Dr. Jim Gray said at the 1984 Futurity, that the Futurity is not so much a place to compete for ribbons as for breeders to present their creative work, giving others a chance "to study breeding methods and sources of specific genetic traits." This is particularly useful at a Futurity where you may see whole litters instead of the selected one or two who may later be deemed outstanding enough for a serious show career.

I most sincerely mean what I said later at the AWC dinner: I am sure that many of the puppies which did not do so well under me on that day may become outstanding champions of the future. It could be that they will outgrow some characteristic which prevented them from winning on the day; they could exhibit a growth pattern which I am not familiar with and therefore failed to appreciate; and they could have been among the many who were for obvious reasons not yet properly ring trained and did not show off whatever assets they may have possessed. Especially in the large baby puppy classes it was almost impossible to choose among all the wealth of quality presented. It seemed most unfair that competition in some classes had to be so much stronger than for others, but unless there is some way of further splitting the big classes, I guess it cannot be helped.

While quality throughout was very high (most especially among the young bitches), type varied considerably — although seldom unacceptably far from the basic standard requirements of elegance combined with power, long smooth lines combined with substance, and refinement combined with sufficient bone. What did worry me in some cases was mainly movement. Frankly, I have never seen quite so much bouncing around on front legs and weak pasterns before, nor so much unsound ness (even crossing over) behind. I can only hope that this will improve with age but would want to keep a wary eye on this if I was planning to breed. There were also a couple of doubtful bites (tendency towards overshot), quite a few curly tails and rough coats, and even a few which appeared never to have been out in public or on a leash before. Of course nobody would expect a puppy to show like an adult, but it should certainly show at least some signs of having been socialized and not become hysterical, as happened in a couple of cases.

These were the exceptions, though, and although I do not want to give a detailed critique, I will stick my neck out and mention the following whom I would expect to hear a lot about in the future.

3-5 Months: Arborlea An Easy Touch, Khiva's Donovan of Rising Star, Konza's Snowflight and Appraxin Morshor Angel Face.

5-7 Months: High Flyer Mach One, his sister High Flyer Glamorous Glennis and Sonsteby's South Sea Pearl.

9-12 Months: Hamrya's Man In The Moon, Snowflight Social Status and Hamrya's Moon Scape V Tyobi (sister to Man In The Moon).

9-12 Months: Ch. Carbeth Reason To Believe (already quite famous!) and his sister Carbeth Jersey Girl.

12-15 Months: Aymes N Raybar's Northwind and Raybar's Scandal Sheet,
plus, as I mentioned, quite a few others which did not do as well on this day.

In the last examination, the delightful 6+ months bitch puppy High Flyer Glamorous Glennis, a brindle with white trim, won on her smooth outline, lovely side gait and happy temperament. She, like so many other winners on the day, was sired by Ch. Plumcreek Walk On Water, who is obviously having a strong influence on the breed.

My thanks to Sandy Jones who seemed to be everywhere and do everything in order to keep the AWC Futurity a success and also to my stewards, particularly Juanita Irvin.

— Bo Bengtson
