THE BRITISH COLUMBIA

WHIPPET RACING CLUB

The British Columbia Whippet Racing Club has been involved in many activities this year both on and off the track. Saint Patrick's Day saw many club members and dogs support the annual seven mile walk in aid of the Variety Club Telethon, enabling them to purchase a heart monitor for the Children's Hospital. After the walk we returned to Barb Shatzko's home for a much needed Irish Coffee.

Our first N.P.R. of the year on June 8th had 40 dogs entered. Top honours went to Tony and Karen Lewis' Lyth Satus and in the process tied his own track record of 11.2 seconds. Kennel mate Lyth D'Jon was a strong second place finisher. Top Puppy was Sailaway Major Motion owned by Bill and Norinne Goring.

This was followed on Sunday by a 350 meter OVAL. Once again Lyth Satus held on to win the meet. Litter brothers Flashfire of Course ARM, finishing his ORC, and Dream on of Course were second and third respectively. Flashfire, owned by Barb Shatzko, completed his ORC at this meet.

Our annual BBQ and Fun Match was held at Maple Grove Park in Surrey, B.C. on June 15th. Our judge, Linda Buchholz, had her work cut out in selecting winners. Best of Breed was Carole Philpott's Alcyon All That Jazz, Best Opposite was June Harrison's Ch. Hillendale Chevyl of Wyndsor. Best Puppy was awarded to Barry Leinbach's Sailaway Ode to Joy.

Our Double—Header held on August 3rd and 4th was well attended with 56 adults and 7 puppies. The weather was hot and sunny and made for a very fast track. Tony and Karen Lewis' entries Lyth Satus and Lyth D'Jon once again displayed fine form in taking top honours on both days. Best Puppy was Steamer's Winsome Jackpot owned by Wendy Russell, showing great promise. Club dog Loughren's Yentyl of Wyndsor owned by June Harrison and Jean Balint completed his A.R.M. at this event with six ARM points the first day and five ARM points the next.

The Double—Header weekend was rounded off with several socials, starting on Friday with the traditional welcoming party and salmon barbecue at the home of Barb Shatzko. This gave everyone a chance to renew old acquaintances and to make some new friends. Trophy presentations and a barbecue were held Saturday evening in June Harrison's back yard. A warm summer evening made for a most enjoyable time with many lovely trophies and plenty to eat.

Several of our members participated in the Super Dog Show at the Pacific National Exhibition in August. Racing demonstrations were held much to the delight of fair goers and other breed participants.

Our final N.P.R. of the year was held on September 7th with 31 adults and 7 puppies. Again the Lewis' entry Lyth Satus took Top Honours with Dave and Annette Rosenstock's Regalstock Lyth Router finishing a close second. Dave and Chris Richardson's Ringdove Bryncoch was top puppy for the day.

An invitation is extended to all Whippet Fanciers to join us for our Double — Header during Expo 86. Here's your chance to plan your holidays so that you can participate in the Double Header; two NPR race meets tentatively scheduled for August 2nd and 3rd, 1986. Then enjoy the world class Exposition, Expo 86, with over 40 countries in attendance including the USA, China and the USSR.

1985 ended on a sad note with the passing of three club members. John and Bertha Markert who had done so much for the club since its inception in 1969 and Charlie Fraser, known for his enthusiasm and support. John, Bertha and Charlie were the kindest and friendliest people you could ever meet. They had kind words for the winners and much needed encouragement for the losers. We will miss them.

I would like to thank our many friends and members from all the Whippet clubs for their participation and hospitality in 1985. A special thanks to my executive, Bill Turpin, Jr., June Harrison, Bill Goring and Marg Baltter and to all the BCWRC members for their support in making this a memorable year.

See you for Expo 86/Double Header 86

Barry Leinbach BCWRC PRESIDENT

Ch. Alcyon All That Jazz

(Ch. Briarwyke's Highlight x Alcyon Local Color)

Jory is truly a "special" dog, showing his versatility in the ring and on the track. He is pictured as BEST OF BREED under Judge Eugene Jacobs at the Lower Mainland Whippet Association's annual SPECIALTY.

My thanks to Dr. John Shelton for a Winner's Dog placement at a previous Western Gazehound Club SPECIALTY, and to Judge Rick Glendinning for completing his championship.

Jory is N.P.R. pointed and is a strong NOTRA racer. He has a delightful temperament, has sound movement, and most important, is a very functional hound.

Since the Greater Twin Cities Whippet Club's formation in 1977, we have been sanctioned as a "Club of Record" with the AKC and are in the process of applying for our first A match.

The GTCWC has been hosting NPR meets since 1981. This year the club was one of the Midwest pioneers in holding back-to-back NPR and NOTRA meets. Our entry was 43 adults and 2 puppies in the NPR and 30 in the NOTRA. The weekend attracted some of the top NPR dogs throughout the country.

Besides our outside activities, fun matches are scheduled on a regular basis and members are informed of coming events through the bi-monthly newsletter. In November the club sponsored a tattoo clinic.

Greater Twin Cities Whippet Club members can always be found throughout the Midwest at AKC shows, lure coursing trials and NPR-NOTRA events with many of our dogs taking home the prizes. Many of these dogs are champions in the ring and on the field. Our members believe in the philosophy of the multi-purpose whippet.

Planned events for 1986:

NPR-NOTRA weekend August 16-17

AKC supported entry with sweepstakes *

September 21, Minnesota River Valley Kennel Club Breed Judge -- Richard Reynolds

Sweepstakes Judge -- Stacey Bailey-Davis * pending AWC approval

CAN. CH. WHEELING DOMINO

" Tulsa" is everything we enjoy in the Whippet - gentlemanly house dog; joyful childrens' pal; beautiful show dog with eye-filling style; and an athletic and breathtaking wood and field companion.

" Tulsa" is 21", shiny black and white, dark of eye. Of intensely inbred Wheeling lines, he will be used with our Alery/Stoney Meadows/Hound Hill bred bitches to continue our quest for the perfect Whippet. He is at stud by private treaty.

CanCh. Swiftsure Phlashback, AmCanFCh.

(Ch. S.Happy Daze, ARM, AmCanFCh. x AmCanCh. Marial's Swiftsure Phantasy, FChX, AmFCh.)

FLASH lacks 1 point to finish in the U.S., with 4 majors & 2 BOBs over specials in limited showing. At home he is a multi Hound Group winner. Of equal importance, FLASH has both ARM & ORC points on the track, is a Best in Field winner and Canada's #2 coursing whippet, and finished his Am.F.Ch. in 3 trials with 3 first placements.

MIKEY & FLASH well represent the whippets we strive for -performance in the ring AND on the track.

ELYSIAN . . . . est. 1962

1985 was a year of "ups" and "downs". The "ups" include:

1. CH. ELYSIAN PEACHY KEEN finishing with a 5—point BOW under breeder—judge Richard Reynolds, AWC Supported show in Louisville.

2. CH. ELYSIAN PEACHTREE PARADE, WD the two following days for majors, finishing under breeder—judge Doris Wear.

3. The BEST OF BREED wins over Specials won by both CH. ELYSIAN LIKE AN ANGEL and CH. ELYSIAN PEACHY KEEN.

4. The 'debut' of our black twins ELYSIAN APPLAUSE and ELYSIAN BEST DRESSED (by Elysian Lion's Share ex Ch. Elysian Like An Angel) at the 1985 AWC Futurity.

5. The birth of another "hopeful": ELYSIAN FLYING COLORS (by Ch. Elysian Peachtree Parade ex Elysian Escapade)

6. We are expecially proud of the many Best of Breed wins and the two HOUND GROUP firsts won by CH. ELYSIAN GEORGIA PEACH (owned and bred by Frances Hembree ex her Group—winning Ch. Elysian Gloria Rejoice)

The "downs" were especially difficult ones:

1. In May we lost our lovely ELYSIAN SUNDAY'S CHILD and 5 of her litter of 7 sired by Elysian Sail On to a mutant strain of Parvo that our present vaccines offer no protection to.

2. In September we lost ELYSIAN EXQUISITE in a tragic accident. She was our 'Star', sired by Elysian Lion's Share x Elysian Sunday's Child. Just beginning her career, she had points won under hound—specialist Judith Fellton.

We consider her our best achievement in our goal to produce whippets we believe correct. We are extremely proud of her and present her here with the only photograph we have of her, taken by Phoebe Booth when Exquisite was 10 months old.

Greetings Whippeteers!

1985 was another busy and successful year for MAWA. The 1st Southern Specialty, Oct. 27, 1985, was hosted by MAWA. From an entry of 123 Whippets, judge, Mrs. W.P. Wear chose CH Whippletree's Icy Hot, owned by Ellen Kirby and Sharon Killey, Best of Breed. The preceding day, MAWA's supported entry drew 112 Whippets. Judge, Eugene Jacobs, chose CH Hound-Hill Sea Otter, owned by Cora N. Miller, Best of Breed. MAWA is pleased to announce it will be the host for the 2nd Annual Southern Specialty, Oct. 26, 1986. MAWA's supported entry will again be the preceding day. We offer to all who attend warm southern hospitality and another memorable banquet.

MAWA held 4 ASFA lure coursing trials in 1985. At each trial more than half of the entries were Whippets. June 7, 1985, MAWA's own CH Kirklea Shaman Chablis, LCM, own ed by Rich and Anna Erdmann, was BOB Whippet. She continued to run to Best In Field. June 8th, Tripletime's Stay the Night, CD, TDX, Can. CD, TDX, F CH, owned by Anya Rappoport was BOB. On Dec. 7, 1985, Vernon Dill's Kumasan's Whip was BOB Whippet, and also went Best In Field. The next day, Vernon's Kumasan's Fina (Whip's mother) was BOB Whippet. 4 more trials are planned for 1986.

We are proud of our members and friends who have contributed so much time to make MAWA's events successful. We are especially proud of member, Dr. James R. Gray, M.D. who was elected as AWC board member this year.

Pictured are some of MAWA's 60+ members. We send warmest regards to all!!!

Frankly, My Dears...

'85 WAS A MARVELOUS YEAR!

We sent our Willie

(Can.Ch. Frankly Majestic of Tallaway)

North with Heather in May and he
became our first homebred Ch. in a long time.

(Devonair's Frankly Rina)

(Can.Ch. Frankly Majestic of Tallaway
x Can.Ch. Devonair's Farah Faucet)

We went to Ohio in August and watched Heather and Rina put on quite a show.

The puppy bitch 6-9 months class was most impressive — 27 with 5 absentees. I managed to pick litter sisters for places 1 and 2! Both were lovely type and movers, could easily change places on any given day. The winner of this class and eventually my WB, Devonair's Frankly Rina, was a houndy red brindle that started with a gorgeous head piece that was long and strong in muzzle with good underjaw, dark eyes with lovely expression, perfect ears. She was of good length overall, stood over plenty of ground, well angulated both ends, good strong bone, she looked strong enough to do a good day's hunting if need be. Moving she was a joy to see, reaching out effortlessly and smoothly, covering ground for one so young, really used herself with minimum effort, and true going and coming. I was afraid she wasn't going to settle as she was quite fresh at times. She was quite a big girl for her age but be cause of her type and movement I overlooked that.

(Jean Ueltschy, Sighthound Review Nov/Dec 1985)

Thank you, Pat and Heather!
