BEST IN SHOW Ch. Beyond Cricketman ( BEYOND CRICKETTER x ROVING LOVELY RITA )
COVER STORY We would like to present Ch. Kindochaline's Katrine, F.Ch. and Ch. Pathens Saja Suka. Katie, our versatile girl, is everything a Whippet should be and everything an owner can be proud of. Except for a couple of points from the puppy class, Katie took all her points within 1 1/2 months time, all owner-handled. She then took to the field and Top Producing Whippet bitch! Her offspring are a credit to her. All 4 of her Champ ion offspring are BB winners and3 are Group placers, winning under breeder judges or all-rounders. One of those has both his American and Canadian Championship. He has taken WD, BOS for a 5 point major at an AWC Support Show and then in Canada taken WD, BW at a Specialty Show. All of his wins were piloted by his Junior Handler-Owner. Katie has 2 more youngsters nearly finished and several just starting. Thank you Earl and Frank McInnis for our "Special Girl". Suki, her 11 year old friend and housemate, is also a credit to the breed. Although Suki did not come to our house until he was nearly 7 years old, we had incorporated him in our breeding program before that time. As a show dog, Suki was "A Weekend Special", finishing his Championship in 3 consecutive days (3-5 point majors) owner - breeder handled. A breeder's dream come true. As a Special, he was in the Top Ten. As a producer, he has also made his mark. According to our knowledge, he has a number of breed-winning progeny. Among them are a Best In Show son, Am.Can.Ch. Che halem's Double Dealer, who was in the Top 5 for the two years he was Specialed. Suki has another son who was Specialed for a short time and made it in the top ratings. Another offspring was a Ch. Breed winner in both the ring and the field. Suki has produced 7 Champion progeny for us (5 in one litter), two of those have Field Champion ships and two others are close to finishing in the Field. Another offspring was the BB Grand National Lure Course winner for 1982, and in the Top Ten Lure Coursers. Another has 8 ARM points. Suki has numerous other Field Champion youngsters. With limited use, he has a total of 15 Champion offspring with two more only points away from finishing. Thank you Hank Speight for allowing us to own Suki. For us at Chehalem, these two Whippets have been an important part in our efforts toward producing a versatile Whippet. As we see their Grandchildren and Great Grand children winning and running too, it is an inspiration to continue their legacy. Xzora's Genuine Risk) 'Sara' finished at thirteen months, taking both majors from the puppy classes, including WB, BOW and BOS at the AWC Eastern Specialty under judge Henry Speight. Many thanks to those judges who recognized this beautiful young bitch. 'Sara' has started lure coursing, winning the open stake at her first trial. Watch for her on the field, and in the Specials ring next spring:
"Excuse me, but . . By Kevin A. Dennan Even at fifty yards away I know they will ask. I know because of the way they talk to each other, look at Thor, talk some more and occasionally glance at me. Twenty yards they are still talking. At ten yards they are silent. At five they ask. "Excuse me, but what kind of dog is that?" Invariably I look down at my pet, watching his well defined muscles roll beneath his smooth, white fur, and announce proudly, "That is a whippet." To the informed, the whippet is best known as a racing dog. Its entire body has been crafted specifically for this purpose. Fine, soft ears are carried thrown back and folded over cutting down on wind resistance. Its long, lean neck seems to flow unnoticeably into its smooth, flexible back, beneath which can be seen thin, purplish veins resembling tiny, distant rivers. There is no rear end but only thickly bunched muscle, striated and cut like those of a bodybuilder's, that gradually lessens in bulk halfway down the back legs. The front legs are extremely thin from toes to elbows, where tight muscle suddenly bulges out abundantly all the way up the upper arm and through the shoulder to its back. It is these powerful, piston- like legs that enable the whippet to propel itself at speeds of up to thirty-five miles an hour. It also has a deep, curved chest which contains the massive lungs needed to sustain its life of running. Finally, the whippet's hard glossy coat is seemingly stretched taut around its body, functioning much like the outfit of a world class speed skater. At a race meet the whippet is attuned to only one object while waiting for its race. The thing for which it was bred to chase: the rabbit. Every sense is zeroed in on the small ball of soft, brown fur. It is totally oblivious to anything else happening around it. It is unaware of the pungent odor of the trash cans containing its competitors' foul droppings or of the delicious scent of barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs that permeates the air. It does not hear the continuous insane screaming and whining of the other dogs or the loud, booming voice of the scoreboard operator over the public address system. It does not even feel itself clawing and scraping to escape from its restricting crate. Once in the starting box, the whippet is in its fullest glory. During the last race, the high-point race, everyone's attention is focused on this box. The starter raises his red and white flag. Through the wrought iron gate the whippet's eyes are fixed rigidly, hungrily on the rabbit skin a mere two feet from them. Their muzzles catch some of the saliva dripping from their foaming mouths. Some of the dogs bang their heads incessantly against the gate unaware of its presence. The atmosphere is ablaze with nervous anticipation. The flag drops, the lure starts, the gates spring open. The whippets explode out of the box reaching full acceleration after only two strides. They seem to fly literally above the ground, a monstrous conglomeration of shifting mass hurtling towards the finish line. The ground trembles beneath the thick grass as their feet pound into the turf again and again. Their bodies swell with the adrenalin they need to sus tain their maddening rush of speed. After two hundred yards, the lure stops and with it the whippets colliding into one another as they converge on the defenseless piece of skin and fur. The proud or disappointed dog owners hurriedly pull their pets from the vicious, mauling horde of attackers. The winning whippet traditionally get to finish off its "kill" alone. Lest one may think that the whippet is a spastic, rabid, hyperactive breed of dog that lives only to kill small, harmless bunnies, I feel I should demonstrate the more pleasant side of this unique animal at least as far as my own pet is concerned. Around the house Thor is completely opposite in nature than when he is at a race meet. In fact, he is more complacent than many a cat I have owned. He moves gracefully throughout the house and rarely gets excited over anything except perhaps dinner. When eating he picks slowly at his Hi-Protein dogmeal like some child who has eaten too much candy before supper. After dinner he will go to an unoccupied corner of the sofa and casually lick his chops while the rest of the family eats. At night he will sneak smoothly beneath the covers of our waterbed and nestle at the bottom against my legs like a small fawn in a thicket next to its mother. He craves the warmth as his thin, white coat is no match for cold weather and there is no more appalling sight than seeing his soft Harp-seal face crying to be let in from the cold. Off the race track he is truly a very languid animal. Unless, of course, he sees a rabbit that happens to be a cat. "A whippet, huh? Does he race? Do you feed him?" They finish their questioning and walk on satisfied with their new found knowledge. A man and his mongrel come into view. He looks at Thor with an inquisitive smile. He looks briefly at me. FC) We proudly present our double King Arthur grandson, FLASH, who completed his championship in whirlwind fashion at 10 month s , o f age! The highlights of his brief show career included a Specialty Best in Sweeps (Judge Bill Turpin, Jr.), 2 Winners Dog awards & a Best of Opposite Sex over top winning Specials at both Calgary Specialties (Judges John Shelton & Lorraine Heichel), and 3 BOB and a Group 3rd placement at All Breed shows. FLASH was awarded WD on RWD every time out, but once. Litter - sister, SWIFTSURE PHANTA'S SHADOW, owned by Denis & Helen Perry, made her ring debut with a Specialty Reserve at 8 months of age, under breeder-judge Norman Ellis. FLASHS SHADOW, along with littermates, DOUBLE PHEATURE (Sue Cardinaell) & PHANTAS CITABRIA (Jay Brown) will be seen in the ring and on the track in 1984. Watch Oh them!
1983 proved to be another successful year for our small Club. We hosted two 3 day weekends of Canadian Kennel Club licensed lure field trials, and had our long awaited Specialty show and sweepstakes. July 17th was the date of our Specialty and sweeps. We are grateful to our breed judge, Norman Ellis, for sharing his impressions on our entry in the form of his critique which we published in our Newsletter. The heavens smiled on us (for a change) and the day was sunny and warm. Bill Turpin assessed the Puppy Sweepstakes and selected the Buchholz' junior puppy dog, Swiftsure Phlashback as his Best in Sweeps. Mr. Ellis then judged the regular classes and chose the Washington owned Chehalem Seismic Activity as his Best of Winners. In a large open bitch class, the nod went to Swiftsure Rainbow Chaser, FC who went on to Winners Bitch. The Specials class was next and after much deliberation, Mr. Ellis selected the Lein bach's Ch. Sailaway Northern Lights, FC as his Best of Breed winner, with June Harrison's Ch. Hillendale Chevyl of Wyndsor as Best Opposite Sex. Our congratulations to all the winners and our thanks to all the exhibitors for their support. A barbeque followed the show where the exhibitors had the chance to meet and talk' with Mr. Ellis, to discuss the show and whippets in general. Plans are well under way for next year's show! Our lure coursing events in April and November were highly successful with large entries in all breeds, and double stakes in the whippet competition. We were pleased to welcome entries from Alberta and as far as California . April's Best of Breed winners were Don Papin's WR's Summery Crystal Energy, who won over double stakes at 2 of the meets, with the 3rd day's winner in Pat Younger's Ch. Arrow's Christmas Bow, from Washington. Our November trials were wet and soggy, but not evidenced by the performance of Leigh Smith's WR's Morrighan of Course, FC, CD who flew to Best of Breed wins all three days over outstanding competition. Our members were active in the show ring and on the racing fields. New whippet champions in the Club include: Ch. Ragtime Four Leaf Clover (Linda Hughes), Ch. Swiftsure Rainbow Chaser, FC (Fisher/Buchholz), Ch. Swiftsure Wishful Thinking, ARM, Am.Can.FC (Buchholz), Ch. Swiftsure Phlashback (Buchholz), and a CD degree with excellent scores to Jim & Bonnie Goebel's Ch. Ragtime Talisman, CD. Our plans for 1984 include our 2nd Specialty and Sweepstakes, as well as our usual two weekends of lure coursing in April and October. We wish everyone the best of luck in their endeavours in 1984 and extend an invitation to all whippet fanciers to join us for our events. We can guarantee a good time!
