A special thanks to Heather and Everett Dansereau of Devonair Whippets for this great historical piece.
Kirklea
We're back.
In the past thirty years we have owned, bred, and shown most of the Sighthounds, but for the last few years have been inactive in Whippets. I would like to thank Hound Hill, Elysian, and Longlesson for how they have used some of the old Kirklea dogs and for what they have accomplished in the breed. We will be doing some selective breeding in the future starting with a promising litter of seven out of Longlesson Kirklea Aster sired by Hound Hill Paul Scarlet.

Aldergrove, British Columbia, Cananda:
The LOWER MAINLAND WHIPPET ASSOCIATION was formed to promote all activities for our versatile breed -- reacing, by holding NPR meets: showing, by putting on Fun Matches, Sanction Matches and Specialty shows: lure coursing, by holding C.S.F.A. lure field trials: and promoting the whippet in obedience. The LMWA was given Canadian Kennel Club recognition in the Spring -- the first step towards holding official CKC events.
1980 was our first year. We held our "qualifying" NPR meet in July with an entry of 22 adults. Undefeated winner was Ch. Swiftsure Happy Daze, ARM, Am. Can. F.Ch. (McLeod/Bucholz), with 2nd place going to Vivian Fraser's Timbar's Midnight Sun, F.Ch.
Our first official NPR meet was held on September 6th with an entry of 25 adults. The eventual winner was California owned Volant Trilby of Wyndsor, ARM (Balint/Larsen), hard pressed by local dog, Sailaway Dreamer's Dagget (Jackson) and a young dog from Oregon, Regalstock Wildwood's Lobo, owned by the Connors.
The next day was our Fun Match, held outdoors at the Buchholz home in Aldergrove. Our thanks to judge Jean Balint for coming from California to judge for us (although we are sure the trip was worth it as Trilby won the NPR)! We had a nice entry with the Breed winner comng from the puppy class, Sailaway Northern Lights, owned by Lorna and Barry Leinbach and the Veteran Class winner, 8 year old Ch. Ringos' Sonny Daze of Course, Am. Can. F.Ch. (Buchholz), taking a strong Best Opposite Sex. Both the race meet and the Fun Match were followed by open house suppers and parties and a very enjoyable time was had by all.
Finishing off the year's activities, we held a supported entry at the Century Dog Show in Vancouver on November 30th. Best of Breed went to Vivian Fraser and Catherine Dochtermann's Ch. Fraserfield Silver Jubilee, with Best Opposite Sex goiing to Ch. Marial's Swiftsure Phantasy, Am.Can. F.Ch. (Buchholz). There was a good cross section of whippets with a large entry made up of dogs from Washington, Oregon, California, Vancouver Island, Alberta and a good number of local entries.
We put out our first issue of our Newsletter in July which we send to all interested whippet fanciers. We hope to make it bigger and more informative as time goes on.
Next year should be an active one for LWMA. Winter projects include building spring loaded starting boxes and attending a Swap Meet to earn money for the Club. We are hoping to hold 3 NPR meets to extend the short racing season in this area. We have been assigned the date of June 21st for our first All Breed Sanction Match (we must have two before we can have a Specialty). As we are a very small club, that should prove to be quite an experience!!
WE are very proud of our member's successes in all fields of competition this past year. Our club members have won Specialties, earned American and Canadian C.D. degrees, finished American and Canadian Field Champions, and have gone out of the area to improve their breeding programs.
So, as you can see, we have come quite a long way from a "pipedream" to rality. We eagerly look forward to 1981 and the years to follow with lots of enthusiasm. We hope that whippet fanciers from all areas will be able to join us in some of our activities in the future.
Best Wishes to All!

A TRIBUTE TO A VERY SPECIAL DOG
Am.Can.Ch. MARIAL'S KING ARTHUR, Am.Can.C.D.
ARTHUR came to us at age 7, having completed his Am. Championship and earned an A.R.M. point as a young dog. Since then, he has competed successfully in every facet of competition, being lure coursing pointed at age 8, Group and Specialty wins at 1/2, and earning both Am. and Can. C.D.'s at age 10 1/2.
ARTHUR has without a doubt, proven to be a top producer of high quality multipurpose offspring. Bred selectively to a small number of bitches (5 in the past 5 years), ARTHUR has produced 6 A.R.M. winners, 4 of which are Bench Champions. He has produced an A.R.M. son in each of his last 4 litters (the 5th being only 3 months old). He has also produced a number of excellent lure coursers, bench champions and obedience degree holders in the U.S. and Canada, of which we are equally proud.
ARTHUR has just celebrated his 12th birthday - - we wish him many more. Thank you ARTHUR, you've given us so much!
We take great pride in presenting some of his talented offspring in the following pages.

Can.Ch. MARIAL'S SWIFTSURE PHANTASY, Am.Can.F.Ch.
( CH. SHERIDAN MARIAL'S NIKITA x CH. MARIAL'S RENFIELD PHOEBE)
F ANTA, our King Arthur grand-daughter, began her Canadian Specials career in July with an exciting Best of Breed at the Gazehound Specialty, under breeder-judge I sabel Stoffers. Shown occasionally, she has several breed wins, including Group 3rd under Fred Young (pictured) over a large Specials entry.
Just starting off in the U.S., FANTA has 6 points (1 major) and several major reserves. She was a strong 2nd place in Open at the AWC Midwest Specialty.
FANTA is an enthusiastic runner and completed both American and Canadian Field C hampionships this year. After only 5 trials, she is rated #8 whippet in Canadian lure coursing for 1980. She is a Grade B racer at N.P.R. meets.
Our sincere thanks to Doug & Mary Beth Arthur and Bernice Strauss for entrusting FANTA to us. She is a delightful character and a cherished member of our house hold.

Can.Ch. Swiftsure Ragtime Galatea, Am.Can.F.Ch., Am.Can.C.D

After having successfully competed in lure coursing, NPR racing and in the show ring, Gala turned her talents to the obedience rings for 1980. Her Am.C.D. was completed in 3 consecutive trials, with her highest score
being 1962. Her Canadian C.D. followed in November with an average score of 193 1/2.

One red and white male puppy is available from Gala's litter, sired by Am.Ch. Marial's Phoenix, Am.F.Ch., born in August. We would like him to go to a running home, as he shows good potential.

TRI-STATE WHIPPET ASSOCIATION REPORT
1980 was a year of growth and learning for the T.S.W.A. We welcomed six new members, some of whom are enjoying their first whippets. We feel we had a successful year and would like to share part of it with you.
Our thanks and appreciation to all of you who were instrumental in assuring the success of our two race meets. We hope you enjoyed visiting and competing in the Tri-state area.
June 14-15 was our first meet, and we had 35 starting adults and 17 puppies. The top three finishers were:
1. Knight Kap O'Lazebrook ARM 2. Slade's Red Kap ARM 3. Marial's Padneyhill Illusion ARM
We also had a large turnout for our fun match and picnic after Saturday's racing.
Our second meet was held October 4-5 with 46 adults starting and 16 puppies. One of the highlights of this meet was a tie for first place. A run-off was held, and the top three places were:
1. Marial's Padneyhill Illusion ARM 2. Epinard's Dallas ARM 3. Slade's Red Kap ARM
Another feature of this meet was the William Backman Puppy Futurity won by Hi Horizon's Halloween Queen. Saturday evening we all enjoyed a dinner and lots of whippet talk.
Our thanks to Dan Feist for the fine job he did as race secretary at both meets this year.
Congratulations to Ch Slade's Dixieland Dandi Duke ARM (Henry/Gutilla) for finishing his Championship and Award of Racing Merit. And also to Paramont's Chasin' Jason (Feist) for completing his ARM.
We are looking forward to 1981: June will see our first race meet with a fun match and picnic planned. Then in October the William Backman Puppy Futurity will be run. We hope to see many of you return to the Tri-state area.
In December we held elections for 1981 officers. They are as follows:
President - Dave Henry Vice President - Jym Webb Treasurer - Carol Feist Secretary - Barb Bussman

The American Whippet Club
NATIONAL PACE SECRETARY ANNUAL REPORT - ROBERT T. THEISS
In N.P.R. Whippet racing, each year seems to be better than the last, not only from the point of view of competition quality but the quality of the entries as well. We have had our problems with inflation, increasing cost of gasoline and motels, and the restrictions put on racing by the different communities. In spite of all this, however, we are growing!!! We have a area known as the South Midwestern region, a new club in British Columbia racing as the Lower Mainland Whippet Club, and several new race grounds.
While the number of race meets stayed the same (42) we had 89 more dogs entered in 1980 (1632) than in 1979 (1543). The average number of entries in 1979 was 36 and in 1980 it was 39. Another increase has been in the number of ARM certificates issued. We issued 18 in 1980, four more than in any previous year. This year has also been more wide open for all com petitors. We have not had any one dog dominate as we have in the past with Volant Big Red Machine, Van Oorschot's Toro and Knight Kap O'Lazebrook.
We have seen many fine racers in 1980 and I might mention just a few of them. Jandall's Formula One, possibly the most traveled dog in 1980, Marial's Padneyhill Illusion, Epinards Dallas, Regalstock Cimarron Del Toro - these would be some of the first to come to mind and I'm sure you are all well aware of the dogs who have done such a marvelous job this year.
On the following pages you will see the growth in the ARM program. Fron one certificate in 1967 to eighteen in 1980. In the list of dogs accumulating points toward their ARM's, only those having earned points within the last three years are shown. Dogs earning points prior to this time have been dropped from the active list but will remain on the inactive list.
If you find any errors in any of the lists, please write me so that we can correct our records. This includes the spelling of names, owners, states or any question on total points earned.
The N.P.R. Rules Committee is in the process of reviewing all comments and suggestions for chan g es in our rules. Any changes or corrections made in the rules will be reported in The Whippet News during the early part of 1981.
The National Race Secretary will continue to send the complete race results to each club in the U.S. and Canada. If anybody would like to have them sent to them direct, it will cost $6.00 per year. Just send your name and address with your check to Bob Theiss, National Race Secretary, 115 Chatwood Terr., St. Louis 63126.
I want to thank all of you for a very pleasant year of racing. It is my hope to be able to visit the West Coast, Canada and the East Coast during the 1981 racing season. Meanwhile, I wish all of you a season of successful racing in 1981 and for many years to come.

WE ARE PROUD OF OUR DOGS
In 1975 Brindi and Dash finished first and second in the midwest as puppies. It didn't stop there, as Brindi received his ARM in three meets in 1976. Dash had to wait until the first meet of 1977 to complete his ARM. 1978 was Brindi's best year, winning three meets. He was second in the mid-west and fifth in the national ratings. 1979 put Dash and Brindi both in the top ten in the mid-west as they had been the three preceding years. 1980, age is catching up with Brindi and Dash as they are both veterans now.
WE ARE PROUD OF OUR DOGS
Vicki ran first in three meets and second in two meets as a puppy in 1977.
She started her ARM, which she finished in 1978. She was in the top ten in the mid-west that year.
