Winners Dog, Best of Opposite Sex for 3 points under Laurence Krebs at Goldcoast Kennel Club, Chicago - 12/16/79 THE GREATER CHICAGO WHIPPET CLUB was "reactivated" in the fall of 1978, and 1979 has been quite a busy y ear. Our first event was an All Sighthound Fun Match, and even though it had to be postponed because of a snowstorm, it was very successful when it finally took place on February 4. We had a total f 63 entries. We supported, with entries and trophies, the Fox River Valley Kennel Club .show and Stone City Kennel Club's fall show. At Fox River Valley , we were also able to have exhibition racing, which drew a good deal f interest and a lot f fun. We formed the Whippet Breeders Responsibility Committee, affectionately known as "Whippet Rescue." Certain monies are earmarked for a special fund used only for whippets in distress homeless, abandoned, given to humane societ ies, etc. To date, fortunately, the whippets we've "rescued" have gone into good homes. We had a Whippet Specialty Fun Match on June 24, along with some fun racing, and the turnout was terrific. We drew an entry of 52 whippet's! We started a newsletter, but it has "fallen by the wayside" at present due to limited time some f our outside members have for their many activities mostly doggie oriented!
To round out the year, we have an educational meeting planned for the end of November. Dr. Jan Spies, a noted herbologist will speak to club members and their friends about the therapeutic value of herbs in the diets of our wonderful four legged friends. We also have a Christmas dinner meeting planned for Thursday, December 13, at the Cypress Restaurant in Hinsdale , IL. Plans for 1980 are already taking shape. We'll. have another all sighthound match in the spring probably March -- and an all whippet match sometime in June. We'll be supporting the same shows -- the spring and fall International, Fox River Valley, and the Stone City fall show. We hope to develop more educational programs, and these may be arranged through co-sponsorship with other area breed clubs. Phoebe Jordan did a super job as Club president in 1979, and athough she continue her membership and support of the Club; she ha s resigned the presidency since moving away from the area. We're hoping to have him showing again by early summer. At this time, we wish to extend our sincere thanks to all the Judges who made 1979 a fantastic year for DUBLINS.
OWNERS: ALICE MESSAMORE AND NEIL & CAROL SCHURMAN Owner-Handled Dear Whippet Enthusiasts: The Midwest region has again enjoyed a good year in racing. Due to the gasoline shortages and high travel costs our numbers of dogs and starters have decreased about 10% over last year. In 1978 we had 205 dogs racing and 613 starters. In 1979 we had 186 dogs racing with 569 starters. All things considered, this looks quite good.
I would like to compliment Knight Kap O'Lazebrook ARM on being the top racer in the Midwest region and on his fine win at Santa Barbara, California in the spring. Marial's Padneyhill Illusion has done very well also this year and placed 5th in the Santa Barbara meet. We have had an exceptional group of racers from the Midwest that have finished their Awards of Racing Merit in 1979. They are Volant Dream Weaver (Petty), Don't Be Late in '78 (Blake), Uruhu's Diamond Reo (Petty), I'm Next of Clulan, F.Ch., C.D. (Haese Blackstone), Ch. Petti's Sir Frederick (Petty), and Marial's Mirage (Arthur-Strauss). This is the first time since the ARM certificates originated where one family has had three racers earn their awards in a sin gle year and congratulations are due the Petty family for this outstanding accomplishment. Congratulations are also in order for the Arthur and Strauss families for having the distinction of being the proud possessors of nine ARM dogs in the years since the awards began. I would also like to compliment the Texas area clubs for the great improvement in both the numbers of racers and the quality of the dogs. We have had four dogs earn ARM points during this year, including Wallach's Poker Chip of Redway, Challenge to Destiny and ROckhill's Windy Blu Britches (Payne), and Epinard's Dallas (Dinkins). I might further add that Windy Blu Britches earned six of her points in the St. Louis meet in a field of fifty-five dogs. We will be having a new club and area in our racing circuit in 1980 since the Alamo Area Whippet Club has completed as of November 17, 1979, their official practice meet. Their meet was run in a most professional manner under very adverse weather conditions. I would like to compliment the club on their efforts and add that we will be looking forward to seeing them put on their first ARM meet in 1980. We are presently in the process of compiling our racing calendar for the 1980 racing season. As soon as all of the clubs have submitted their requests for dates and they have been approved we will forward this information to all subscribers. Plumcreek Whippets Linda & Richard Larson 55035 Karnes Road Naperville, OH 60540 312-357-5309 NORTH TEXAS WHIPPET CLUB 1979 1979 has been a learning and improving year for the North Texas Whippet Club. As with most clubs, not many members, but hard workers. We have reached several goals this year which are 1. We have held 4 ARM national point races in 1979. This is the 4th one to be held this Saturday, December 1st and we have a 40 dog entry. This is a milestone for us--the most dogs we have had at any of our races. In Texas folks that is an accomplishment--as to go anywhere in Texas, even within Texas is a long way. For out of state people even farther. 2. We can when necessary now have enough dogs to hold a race without out of state dogs. 3. We have become incorporated this year due to the diligence of our President, Barbara Koch. 4. We had a social get together with a buffet dinner after the supported entry AKC show in Dallas in March, 1979 with a nice attendance from throughout the U.S. 5. We had a 2 day race September 29 and 30 with a dinner for members and guests with a talk by Bob Theiss who will become National Race Secretary. We plan to do this annually. 6. We have three dogs in our club owned by different members in obedience. One whippet recently received her CD. 7. We have a number of ARM pointed dogs in Texas now. 8. Our first Texas dog went out of state and won ARM points. 9. We have had several whippets win their AKC championship in 1979. We are trying very hard to be a versitile club with interest in racing, showing and obedience, which shows the true greatness of the whippet. These whippets in the different areas of competition are not usually different dogs but the same whippet competing in racing,obedience or conformation. his is what we are striving for in the North Texas Whippet Club. Goals we hope to accomplish in 1980 are 1. New starting boxes. 2. Obtain private property to race on so we may build some permenent fixtures. 3. New members to compete in more than one area. 4. For some of our dogs to receive ARM certificates, Obedience Titles, and AKC conformation championships. 5. More dogs to go to out of state competition--especially in racing. As you see we've come a long way--but have a long way to go. Next year we hope we will be able to say we have reached our 1980 goals.
