December 1978

1978 was a great year for the E.W.A., putting on four N.P,R. meets, one Match Show with Mrs. W.P. Wear Judging, and finishing our first E.W.A., A.R.M. We also had 68 dogs running one time or another and no one dog dominating every race meet.

The top ten dogs are listed on total points earned for the four meets in the east.

1. MAGPI'S UNA VIA (TOBY) owned by Linda Fontana. Toby with a total of 71/2 ARM points is one of the dogs that will finish next year. Toby was the only dog that picked up ARM points at every meet this year.

2. RICKY'S Z Z TOP (Z) owned by Ricky Peters. Z with a total of 8 ARM points is another dog that will finish next year. Z was hurt at the end of the season that messed him up, but he has the determination to be on top again.

3. MAGPI'S SALIDA DEL SOL (PEACHES) owned by Chris Ciaccio & M. Delaplain. She is the one dog that makes no one dog dominate the race meets. Peaches has 1/2 ARM point and should pick up more next year.

4. VOLANT MUSICMAN (SPIKE) owned by Larry Dimeo. .Spike has 9 ARM points and he will finish next year. He missed a race this year or he would have had more ARM points.

S. VOLANT JAllMAN (DUKE) owned by Larry Dimeo. Duke is our first ARM. He picked up the top points at our last meet. I think everyone is just as glad as Larry was to see him finish. Duke also missed a meet this year. He just wanted to save the excitement for the last meet. CONGRATULATIONS DUKE.

6. MARE'S HEAD FAMOUS FLIGHT ( LITTLE JOHN) owned by Debbie Briscoe . Lt. John has been the top Limit for the past two years and we hope he can do it again nextyear. He has some stiff competition this past year.

7. SOUND THE CHARGE (LOPSIDE) owned by Chris Blake. Lopside has 4 ARM points and he will beat you when you least expect it. He should be up there next year.

8. SATURN'S YELLOWMOON (WENDELL) owned by Nino & Louise Spiga. Wendell is one of our top A-B dogs on the east. He should pick up some ARM points next year.

9. RIMSKITTLE FOOLS RUSH IN (RUSHER) owned by Sue Bynack. Rusher is a dog that just started racing this season and came from D to top B. He has a finish that you wouldn't believe. He also should pick up some ARM points next year.

10. MAGPI'S PUESTA DEL SOL (PUESTI) owned by Cory Delaplain. Puesti is another strong running B dog. She'll beat the best and will be right up there again next year.

We have a lot of up and coming dogs inthe east. SUNDANCE EQUATOR owned by Richie Briscoe finished 11th. , and has a finish in the last 50 yards that is unbelievable. JERE' is also a limit that gives Lt. John some competition.

HARMONYS WALDO PEPPER OF MAGPI (WALDO) owned by Maggie Delaplain also finished 11th. As he gets a little age on him he will be up in the top ten. STONEY MEADOW'S DAILY DOUBLE (DAILY) owned by Chris Blake in our last two meets finished up in the top 10. He will be stronger next season. Also Chris owns WINDWOOD GRANDPA TURPIN (TERP) that she just received and is looking great. Also POWER OF DESTINY ARM (Buck) will have a bunch of puppies running next year. Buck was a Veteran this year. SHADOWMERE TIFFANY & SHADOWMERE NUTMEG owned by Mary Hufford-Graham are two Limit bitches that run very well. She also has a young dog that should be coming up next year. Ch. SHADOWMERE HEMLOCK.

We had some outstanding puppies running this year. Cora Miller with HOUND HILL BEWARE (LIGHT) was top puppy in two meets and then moved up to adult at our

last meet. Light is a strong running dog and is well trained he will be tough. Also HOUND HILL AWARE (SPOT) running second to Light is another outstanding young dog. Spot ran very well as an adult. SATURN'S SUNKIST owned by Nino & Louise Spiga that ran second high pup in Mass., looked real good. HARMONY'S DUBL XPOSURE ( MAX) owned by Ann Geller was third at N.J. meet and high score puppy at N.Y. meet he is a very strong dog and should be a good adult racer. TIMBAR'S CLOSE ENCOUNTER (MELON) owned by Joe & Joyce Messineo will be comming up and they also have puppies out of CH. ARRIAN'S FACET OF GOLD DUST.

We had a lot more people racing this year so next year should be even better. Gail Volavka with your top Veteran CH. GULL HAVEN WHEAT GERM. And Dave Levinson with your dogs from the Washington area. We would like.to thank everyone for your support and donations. See you all next year.

MORE RACING COMING TO THE EAST. A new club is being formed in the Delaware area. Chris Blake is starting the Diamond State Racing Club and will be putting on her unofficial race meet to be held on April 28, 1979 at Mr. & Mrs. A.V. Keene's of the famous Poodles Kennel Round Table anyone interested you can call Chris at 302-834-9770.

Keep on Racing.

1978 was a highly successful year for the B.C. Whippet Racing Club. Race meetings ran smoothly - thanks to the organization of our hard-working racing secretary, Lorna Leinbach - and our entry of 54 adults on August 5th was a record for National Point Race Meetings held in the Pacific Northwest . Following this race meet, a relaxed social gathering and pot-luck dinner was held at the home of Spencer and Joan Oswald. The race meet hosted the next day by the Washington Whippet Racing Club was efficiently run by Frank and Kathy Kasziewicz. The close relationship we have developed over the years with the whippet owners of Washington State has been mutually beneficial and the double-header racing weekend we co-sponsor is now regarded as one of the racing highlights each summer on the Pacific Coast.

In July, the annual fun match - barbeque was held at the home of Bill and Alice Turpin with breeder-judge Vivian Fraser selecting two of Christine Hopperstad's fine Alcyon whippets for Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex.

On the race track, the early season leader was Canada's top N.P.R. whippet for 1977, the Rankin's Amberwood Orc of Re g alstock ARM: By the end of the season, however, Ann Webster's undefeated puppy, Regalstock Windwood Minstrel had moved up to adult racing and clearly established himself as the fastest whippet in this area by going undefeated at our September N.P.R. meet. Minstrel was closely followed by the McLeod-Buccholz entry, Swiftsure Happy Daze who edged out Orc as the second fastest racer in the Northwest. The fourth fastest racer, and best female, was Ch. Shades of Terror ARM (formerly Tara of Belle Rouge) owned by the Turpins, who won the Washington meet in July.

During the past year, six litters of pups have been whelped in the ownership of various club members. This should ensure a continued supply of young racers for several years to come.

The much anticipated highlight of the 1979 season will be the celebration of the club's 10th anniversary. The festivities will commence on the weekend of the Double-Header Race Meet (August 4th and 5th). Details on the celebration appear elsewhere in this issue of the Whippet News. We hope many of our club's old-time whippet friends will attend this memorable occasion. Respectfully submitted,

Bill Turpin Jr. President, B.C.W.R.C.

For the NCWC 1978 was probably our most successful year since its founding. We hosted several events that kept us all busy but gave us a substantial year-ending bank balance.

Even though 1978 brought us an increase in membership, we still rate as the smallest club in California (probably the USA). Our numbers are small, but what we lack in quantity we gain in interest and enthusiasm. The club definitely owes its success to a great bunch of people who are always willing to work whenever they are needed.

The first event we hosted was our N.P.R. meet at Fresno. This has been a tradition for many years to put on this meet in conjunction with the Sun-Maid Kennel Club A.K.C. Show. This is a great opportunity for the many people who attend the show to see the Whippet in action. I am sorry to report that there will be no further race meets held at Fresno.

As usual, July brought us the big event of the year, our super triple header. The lure course was the first of our three events, followed the next day by our annual All Hound Fun-Match. Without a doubt our fun-match turned out to be the biggest fund raiser with a record entry of over 225 dogs. We had an all-time high of 32 Whippets entered in conformation which is quite a remarkable feat when one considers this is just a small fun-match. The third event was our second N.P.R. meet which, once again, indicated to be very popular with our good friends from down South. We conclude our racing with a pot-luck dinner which gives everyone an opportunity to relax and talk over the day's activities.

Probably the highlight of the year was our oval track race meet, which proved to be a highly successful event. Actually this is the third time we have hosted this type of racing, but this was our first time on a regular grass track. Judging from the tremendous enthusiasm for this type of racing, it now looks like it will be a part of our regular scheduled events. We plan to put on two oval track meets in 1979. I might add that other clubs in California also plan to host this new type of racing.

It was quite apparent by the time we put on our October National Point Race Meet we were all getting tired and glad to close out the year. Our club will resume activities again in January with our first race practice. With all the new puppies in the area, it looks like we will have a busy year ahead.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the NCWC for their interest and participation. My best wishes to all for a happy, healthy and successful 1979!

Jean Balint

NCWC President/Race Secretary
