WHIRLAWAYS DOC HOLIDAY "That Red Dog Doc has had an exciting year. Starting in California in January. He came to join us in June. Doc is now very close to his show championship . After he finishes we hope to race and course him. Doc has some coursing points and a lure coursing title is in the future. Doc has also become a father, siring a litter of 9 with Stone- feathers Stonefeather "Sula" owned by Phillis Brown and Kathy Breslen. "Sula" is a sister to First Edition ARM and Mr. Light foot ARM. ILLUSTRATED WHIPPET STANDARD by Mary Beth Arthur Although the true origin of the Whippet is not certain, we do know that the purpose of the breed dictated what the original authors of the breed standard put into words as the ideal. The ideal was intended to be a Greyhound in miniature--a medium sized sighthound, functional and athletic, with aesthetic breed characteristics. Our standard should convey a word picture of a sturdy and remarkable breed of dog. When considering any breed standard, three basic features deserve mention. They are balance, substance and style. They could be defined as listed below. 1) Balance expresses the harmonious development of all parts. This is important because if any one part is deficient, then full use cannot be made of the other parts of the body. Balance may also be used in describing the functionally efficient coordination of all the characteristics that make for smooth, flexible action. 2) Substance means strength of bone, depth and breadth of body, fit muscular condition, without being coarse, common or bulgy excessive muscling. 3) Style involves the natural expression at rest or in action. Beauty of conformation, graceful action and general attitude contribute to style. The following excerpts are from an article entitled "The Waxing Standard" by Robert S. Walker, reprinted by permission of Cocker Spaniel Leader. Although directed toward the Cocker Spaniel Standard, Mr. Walker's remarks are applicable to the Whippet standard as well: There has been a tendency among breeders of Cocker Spaniels, as well as most other breeds, to analyze the Standard in great detail, and thereby to arrive at conclusions which may have only partial validity, or sometimes none at all. And so, inaccurate meanings have been evolved from the Standard. The Standard by its nature cannot be absolute and rigid because it serves human beings who are neither perfect nor infallible. It is essential to have sufficient flexibility to accomodate valid differences of opinion and to enable the application of some degree of ordinary common sense while relating the Standard to certain specific animals. Make no mistake that i suggest that the Standard be ignored, or that it is not important. On the contrary. It is vital. It is the wall between order and chaos, and must be both observed and preserved. However, it is an error and a disservice to the breed to attempt to read into the Standard something that is not there. Flexibility is an important part of every standard. The Standard must fit many diverse "types" differing in style and in detail. There is no one "correct" cocker. And I, for one, say thank God. The dog show is a matter of opinion: the breeder expresses his opinion with his entries; the judge expresses his opinion with his awards. Those who cannot accept this fact will always be unhappy with the sport of pure-bred dogs, but sensible application of the Standard will add to the enjoyment of our sport. The following drawings and comments are my attempt to illustrate the words of the Whippet Standard. They reflect my personal taste and preference within the present standard for the breed. It is hoped that they will aid breeders, exhibitors and/or fanciers to better visualize correct and incorrect features of the Whippet. Tail: The tail long and tapering, reaching to the hipbone when drawn through between the legs. When the dog is in motion, the tail is carried low with a gentle upward curve; tail should not be carried higher than top of back. A curled tail should be penalized. Coat and Color: Close, smooth and firm in texture. A coarse, or wooly coat should be penalized. Color immaterial. N.B.: Old scars and injuries, the result of work or accident should not be allowed to prejudice the dog's chance in the show ring, unless they interfere with its movement or ability to perform. Size: Ideal height for dogs, 19 to 22 inches; for bitches, 18 to 21 inches, measured across the shoulders at the highest point. One-half inch above or below the above stated measurements will disqualify. Disqualifications: Blue or china-colored eyes. Undershot. Overshot one-quarter inch or more. A dog one-half inch above or below the measurements specified under "Size." Approved March 9, 1976
AMERICAN & CANADIAN CHAMPION MARIAL'S KING ARTHUR Arthur has competed successfully in all phases of compet ition, being ARM pointed, CSFA lure coursing pointed, Canadian Group winner, and at 8 1/2 Best of Breed at the Western Canada Gazehound Specialty. Although he has been bred selectively to a small number of bitches, he has without question proven himself a producer of top quality dual purpose offspring. We are justifiably proud of Am. & Can. Ch. Marial's King Arthur and the accomplishments of his offspring (see opposite page). Arthur is at stud to approved bitches, who have been tested and found negative for infectious brucellosis. "Louie" finished his ARM in 1978 in four consecutive race meets, beginning with Santa Barbara at the age of 13 months. He earned Winners Dog and a 4 point major under breeder-judge Richard Reynolds at the Grand Rapids Kennel Club November 12, 1978. A Canadian import, bred by Marion Goodwin, he is sired by Am. & Can. Ch. Marial's King Arthur ex Padneyhiil Moonbeam.
The information contained in the following report covers all of the meets held in our region for the 1978 racing season, plus the Santa Barbara meet. The Midwest Region, consisting of the Burlington Whippet Club, Greater St. Louis Whippet Club, Midwest Coursing Club, North Texas Whippet Club and the Tri-State Whippet Association, had a record number of race meets held in 1978. We had a total of fourteen meets held in eight different locations, consisting of one each in Antioch, Champaign, Dallas and San Antonio; two each at Burlington and Denison and three each at Hamilton and St. Louis. We not only increased the number of meets for the year but also the total number of dogs, rising from 151 dogs in 1977 to 205 dogs in 1978, and the number of starters from O4 in 1977 to 613 in 1978. Very good indeed! The race meet totals for the season just past are as follows:
There has not been any startling increase in new members per club. There were 79 owners supplying the 205 dogs running and the 613 total starters. This gives you an average of 2.5 dogs per owner and 7.7 starters per owner. Since we have the number of dogs per owner I feel it is most important that we do not deviate from our tradition of two day meets. One day just does not allow enough time for owners working multiple dogs to be able to enjoy the meet, the dogs or the people. None of the dogs in our region competed in all fourteen meets but there were two dogs which competed in ten race meets. These were Myric's Commandor (Tolley) and Uruhu's Texas Tripper (Petty). There were six dogs to compete in nine meets. Three of these are owned by the Mumme's and are Hallmark's Brindle Express, Hallmark's Lord Sebastian and Pyramid's Victory or Defeat. The others are Sir Frederick and Patric's Elation, owned by the Petty's, and I'm Next of Clulan, owned by Haese-Blackstone. There were five to compete in eight races, eleven who competed in seven races, ten who competed in six races, eleven who competed in five races, 21 to compete in four races, twenty-two in three races, thirty-three in two races and seventy-five who competed in only one race meet only. This is quite a group. Again this year we have compiled a list of the top ten midwestern whippets racing. We have listed total points earned (Chart I) and average points of dogs who participated in seven meets or more (Chart II). Chart I

As you can see, nine of the top ten racers are the same on each list, but not in the same order. Nine of the top ten dogs on each chart are ARM winners and the 10th dog in each case has 12 1/3 points toward their ARM award. As a personal comment on the season just past, I feel that even with the additional number of meets added to our schedule in 1978, we had excellent support and cooperation among the Whippet owners. We feel that efforts have been made to improve the mechanics of the race meets through greater participation of all members, both old and new, and the result has been a greater enthusiasm for all concerned. We will be working on the schedule for the 1979 racing season during the winter months and this information will be included in the 1st issue of 1979 which we hope to have available for mailing by the middle or end of February. We would greatly appreciate any comments you might have regarding your interest in receiving such a publication approximately four times per year. This would contain all current racing information, results and heat by heat finishes, giving you a permanent and up to date record of all racing within our area. There will be a yearly charge made for the four publications, the exact amount of which is unknown at this time. It will be somewhere between $5 . 00 and $8.00 for the four issues, depending on our printing and mailing costs, etc. Prior to the mailing of the 1st issue of 1979 we will send out information to those interested with costs listed and a stub to be returned to indicate your interest in receiving the quarterly reports. I would like at this time to extend my thanks to all of you who gave your time and efforts to make the racing season the success it was. We are looking forward to an exciting year in 1979 due to the number of fine young racers who participated in the latter part of the season and also the prospective "youngsters" who will be coming of age as we approach the 1979 racing year, beginning in May.
