GREAT WESTERN WHIPPET ASSOCIATION DEDICATED TO THE TOTAL WHIPPET EXTENDS SEASONS GREETINGS TO ALL OTHER WHIPPET ENTHUSIASTS SEASON'S GREETINGS from the TRI-STATE WHIPPET ASSOCIATION 1974 was a good year for the TSWA. Although we didn't have as many members participating in racing and showing as last year, the dogs from our Club were very successful and left their mark when competing. Most outstanding and exciting was the exceptional performance of VOLANT BIG RED MACHINE, ARM. At the time of this writing, Benchie is still dominating midwest racing. In addition to the many records she has set and her race meet wins, Benchie recently won the Speed and Beauty Award under judge Louis Pegram. Her owners, the Gluhm's and the Helton's are justly proud of their truly GREAT RACING MACHINE! The second fiddle — with a long string of second place wins and currently standing second in the midwest point totals is Benchie's brother, VOLANT BUCKEYE EXPRESS, ARM. Owned by the Helton's Woody has a record to be proud of, and was the High Score Adult at Chargrin Falls this year, defeating, MARIAL'S RENFIELD PHALAROPE, ARM in the run-off. Since June, SLADE'S EDIE ANN O'LAZEBROOK has led this year's puppy field. The Henry family is quite proud of Edie's fine record of three 1st places and one 2nd. Edie will certainly add to the excitement as she enters the adult field this November at St. Louis. TSWA dogs turning in top ten performances this year were: VOLANT INTERMISSION RIFF, Helton (earning 5 ARM points); RENFIELD LANCE OF REDWAY, Bales; SATIN DOLL, Helton; SLADE'S T. TIMOTHY TANK, Henry; SLADE'S BLACK SAMBOZETTE, Henry and VOLANT FAT ALBERT, ARM, Helton. One of the smallest racers in our Club, the Helton's VOLANT HELLZAPOPPIN' is one of this year's top limit class racers. There have been very few dogs shown by TSWA members this year. The Henry's blue bitch, CHAMPION SLADE'S JIMALEE CRICKET started her bid for her title with a fantastic Best of Breed win and finished recently at the Batavia, Ohio show with a Best of Breed. Trix was proudly and primarily owner/handled to her championship and has also placed consistently high at National Point Race Meets, coming right from the show ring and onto the track. LOUISE CARR has a litter that has had numerous high placements at matches and we are sorry that we do not have the names to list. SLADE'S EDIE ANN O'LAZEBROOK placed 1st in the 9/12 month puppy class at both the AWC Sweepstakes and Specialty shows and recently went RWB at the TSWA fall match while VOLANT HELLZAPOPPIN' was WB at the spring TSWA match and 1st in open bitch at Antioch. KIMBERLY HENRY was the excited winner of the Junior Handling class at our fall match. She won showing SLADE'S T. TIMOTHY TANK. The TSWA is pleased with the many fine compliments we have received on our awards for the 1974 season. In addition to the exceptional array of awards furnished by the Club, we would like to thank those who made donations. Last, and certainly not least, we would like to thank the many people who have participated and helped with our activities. Inspite of the tremendous time problems we face at Chargrin Falls, we were able to put on a fine meet when everyone pitched in and helped. Anyone attending our fall meet can attest the cooperation, sportsmanship and congeniality that resulted in another great race meet. Still holding the record for being the youngest whippet ever to win a NPRM or the ARM, she also turned in a near-record breaking time of 11.25 seconds at the spring Hamilton meet. Starting her bid for her championship as a 71/2 month old puppy and taking BOB under judge Doris Wear at the Cincinnati KC Show, she finished her requirements with a BOB on September 8, 1974 under judge Raphael Schulte. This climaxed 15 months of hard work in competing for her championship. For a solid blue bitch, we at Slade Kennels are very proud of her accomplishments. In addition to her fine record listed below, we were proud when she placed RWB at the 1973 Mid-West Specialty Show from an entry of 50 plus (judge: C. Cormany). Trix is a very docile and wonderful whippet to have in our home. While campaigning for her championship, she has also competed as a consistent C/B racer. Many thanks also to Anthony Gutilla who succeeded in acquiring her second major.

VOLANT WHIPPETS VOLANT BUCKEYE EXPRESS, ARM .....................AVAILABLE AT STUD TO APPROVED BITCHES Dona and Gene Helton ASFA LURE FIELD TRIALS HOW ARE THE WHIPPETS DOING? By Elizabeth J. Blalock Organized lure field coursing in the United States , under the auspices of the American Sight- hound Field Association, is not quite three years old, but it is probably the fastest growing sport available to whippets and their owners. From its beginnings in early 1972 in the San Francisco Bayarea, it has spread into Southern California, Colorado, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Arizona, with entries also coming from neighboring states that do not yet have organized clubs. Whippets have taken to this new activity with gusto, and so have their owners. Since they began, 154 whippets have competed in one or more lure coursing events. Of these whippets, about 40 are no longer active. There are (as of November 1st) 14 whippet lure field coursing champions whose owners are very proud to put the F. Ch. after their dog's name. (There are a total of 21 Field Champions in all other sighthound breeds combined.) This title is not yet recognized by the American Whippet Club or the American Kennel Club, but the dream of the organizers and those most active in the sport is that this will come about in the near future. Whether it does or not, the title is a coveted one, and one that does not come easily. As one owner said: "lure coursing is the chanciest thing in dogs!" Many things can affect the performance of a dog on a given day — his familiarity with the site and course plan, the way the lure is operated, how sharp the turns are, how the judges view wide turns, cutting corners, relative speeds, and so forth. Even with all these possible variables to contend with, most whippet owners derive a great deal of pleasure watching the hounds run. Another owner said that lure coursing is the most beautiful sport available to dog owners, and he was certainly correct. The courses run longer than a race so there is more time to watch the dogs run, turn right or left, corner again, and then lunge at the lure. Open field courses run longer, but often the dogs go so far one has to have binoculars to see the action. With lure coursing the dogs are closer, and there are none of the hazards implicit in the open field. The dogs enjoy it thoroughly — after all it is very like what they were bred to do —chase rabbits. With an eye to keeping the sport in the best interests of pure bred dogs, each hound competing must meet the AKC breed standard, and each is inspected for conformance at every meet. It is a sport where the advantage is most often with the smaller dog, rather than the larger, as is the case with racing. There are two field champions who are winners of the ARM as well as the F. CH., and three others have ARM points — surely a testimonial to their superior running ability. Two of these are also open field coursing champions! (see list below.) The first American Sighthound Field Associa tion Champion was a whippet — TIGER RAG OF KEYNOTE who later earned his Companion Dog title as well. ZEPHYR, F. Ch., C.D. has the dis tinction of being the youngest whippet to earn the F. CH. — at 19 months. FLYALONG DART, F. Ch. was the oldest — at over 6 years, and the first to also have breed points. There is one F. Ch. in Colorado — RIGG'S LINUS, owned by Charles Rigg. He, and EPINARD SHELBY OF WYNDSOR, PCC, ARM, F. Ch., owned by the Balints, both finished in three straight meets. It is not that easy for most of the dogs, however, and many of them work a year or two to make the necessary 100 points, which must include a first place or two second place wins. Following is a list of all the whippet field cham pions up to November 1, 1974, with the date they finished. I think it is interesting to note how many established breeding lines are represented by these winners.
Besides these fine coursers, there are several dogs which are very close to finishing, needing only a few points or a placement to complete the title requirements. Who will be the next whippet field champion??

British Columbia Whippet Race Club National Point Race Meet September 14, 1974 It seemed more like August than mid-September — bright, hot and dry. The turf was a springy green and the dogs anxious to begin running. WE had hoped to make 30 dogs so as to boost the ARM points, but as the day drew closer injuries, bitches in season and other absenses lowered the number until we were afraid we might not make 20. The dependable D's are just as important as the High point dogs and we really appreciate the old timers and the not-so-fast dogs who enjoy running and to their best and are the ones who allow the A's to accumulate the ARM points. When Saturday came we sighed in relief with 22 entered. Dispite the small number of dogs the competition was fierce and ARM points are not easily come by in the Northwest. M&M fulfilled every hope and placed first in everyone of her races. Rose ran exceptionally well considering she had just come out of season and so had not been to a race practice for nearly a month. Billy — a veteran this year and last — showed his remarkable staying power. This dog only began competing three seasons ago. Had he been run as a youngster he would certainly have an ARM behind his name. A young bitch who more than fulfilled the promise of her breeding was Nessa. Strictly a pet who has shown up infrequently at race practices, she challenged the fastest racers of the day. With a little more experience and track savy she might give the top dogs here and elsewhere a real run for their money. Injuries prevented three good running dogs from doing their best. Hopperstad's YP had to be scratched before the second program and Rankin's Shady was pulled after the 2nd program. The Grand Old Man -Jimbo — ran all four programs and a final run-off for High Point Champion, before he began to show a bad leg that must have been slowing him up for the last half of the meet. His off-spring took home the trophies for Papa with M&M taking the meet, Lady High C and Nessa High D and first time entered. As we pack away the jackets and muzzles for another season, we look forward to next spring when hopefully there will be more promising youngsters out and visitors to increase our numbers and challenge our dogs for ARM points. The weather was perfect and the racing conditions excellent for our second day of National Point racing. We had a great entry of 51 adults and 7 puppies. It seemed the dogs ran better than ever and showed tremendous enthusiasm for each race. The big surprise of the week-end was the fantastic performance of Weasel Boy. This 15 month old youngster ran superb and should be a strong contender for the top spot next year. Another young dog running great was Big Star Jet. This beautiful whippet has excellent conformation and should have no trouble getting his championship both in the ring as well as on the track. Happy people were the Rosenstocks who had two dogs, Willie and Wistful in the top ten. Wistful picked up her first ARM points. It was great to see two familiar faces again, Cathy & Gene Smith. Traveling all the way from Illinois it delighted everyone to see their dog First Edition pick up the necessary points for his ARM title. Gene about erupted when this fine dog won the first race on Saturday very easily. The dog just ran a fantastic race. Congratulations Gene and Cathy on his ARM title. Our Canadian visitors were very happy when M & M finally settled down to do some serious running. She proved to be a great contender and picked up 4 ARM points. Her famous daddy Sonny Jim of Course ran equally well and picked up the High Score Champion award. Disappointed people were Lorna & Barry Leinback who's little bitch Rosie didn't run up to her usual form. It certainly didn't help when her jacket came undone and she tripped over it all the way to the finish line. We hope they will make a return trip next A very busy but happy man was Don Dye who ran all four of his GIRLS. Crystal made Don very proud when she picked up the High Score D award. Crystal is one half of the now famous brace of whites with 5 BIS wins. We all missed seeing one outstanding dog, Toro. Deanne Marten was unable to make the meets and did Shelby take advantage of her absence! He really put out two great performances and was top dog both days. Considering he is now running as a veteran we were doubly proud of our dear old Shelby . The puppies put on an excellent show and look like professionals already. Ginger of Wyndsor really showed her stuff and won all of her races easily. Strongly challenging was her brother Lennox . He will be a fine runner when he grows into his legs and learns how to use them. Still running high he shows tremendous potential for next year. The puppies were beautifully trained and my compliments to all the owners for their dogs good clean running. I would like to mention each dog individually, but space does not permit. They all ran great and deserve trophies. I thank each and everyone who made this wonderful week-end possible. My workers were absolutely splendid, without you I couldn't have done it. For everyone who ran their dogs thank you so much, a special thank you for the people from out of state who made the long journey to California . For me it was a week-end I will long remember. FIRST PROGRAM SECOND PROGRAM THIRD PROGRAM FOURTH PROGRAM Southern California Whippet Association There was a great deal to anticipate in the SCWA NPR held at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley on September 21, 1974, when 59 adults and 12 puppies competed to make this the largest turn out of racers in 1974. It was particularly gratifying to see so many whippet friends from up North who took back a good share of the trophies. This was our first NPR at the Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley and it was more than adequate for our needs. While it is everyone's obsession to see their dog win an ARM it is becomingly equal an obsession to hope their Whippet might someday beat TORO, if only for one race. Yes, it happened! Shelby, who doesn't make many mistakes, took advantage of a rough situation in Race 3 to beat TORO by a small margin. Although the win was somewhat dampened by the bumping in this particular race (the competition is getting rough), it was nonetheless called an official race, as it should have been. The shout of joy by Jean Balint, the owner of SHELBY, could be heard all the way to San Francisco. Still, one 2nd place call doesn't lose the meet, and Dianna Marten's TORO booked his 15th Race Meet with his invincability only slightly scratched. DOOGAN, owned by Bruce and Sheryl Steckel, was thought by many to be the dog that might upset TORO, after DOOGAN had beaten BIG RED MACHINE in St. Louis , Mo. last month. DOOGAN just couldn't seem to get started in his first two races, but he came back strong in his final two races to come in a respectable 3rd overall behind TORO and SHELBY. TU, owned by Ernest & Pat Rickard, split first place points with BIG STAR JET, owned by Duane Hickman. This finishes JET and adds another ARM racer to the West Coast Competition. Not only did TIGGER, owned by Patricia Mills, win the award for "first time entered," he picked up 1 ARM point in doing so when he split 3rd place points with TIPPER, owned by William Fergerson. Any one of 7 dogs (DAILY, BEAU, DEACON, TIPPER, WEASEL BOY, SALLY, or MI BLUE) could have won ARM points by the simple expedient of winning his last race — TIPPER did win in his race, with JOE WILLY, ARM, winning the race that set back 5 of the other 6 hopefuls. That last race can be very important. In the puppy races, LENNOX, owned by Marilyn and Bob Bickers, won all his races. This young racer, sired by SHELBY, looks ready to carry on the Wyndsor colors when his durable daddy retires, or will it be litter mates HANNAH, also owned by the Bickers, or GINGER, owned by Dean & Pat Thompson who captured 3rd and 4th position. We had unbelievably beautiful weather, very few (2) equipment problems and an atmosphere of sportsmanship and friendship. Following Saturday's racing, all but a few gathered at the home of Frank and Mary K. Gluhm for a cook-out. The compliments were many, on what turned out to be a most enjoyable evening for all. I still can't get over all of the food — especially the lovely cake with the racing whippet decoration! On Sunday, those willing to brave the early morning hours gathered for our traditional Fun Match. We had an entry of 29 dogs and 7 Junior Handlers pass under the inspection of Judge Dr. Robert Pruett. BOB Puppy went to Marial's Phaedra, owner Arthur Strauss while the Petrie's captured BOB Adult with Marmora's Pirate Power. Kim Henry was the proud recipeint of Best Junior Handler ribbon and trophy, showing Tank. The adult field was once again dominated by VOLANT BIG RED MACHINE, ARM. It is getting hard to write new adjectives to describe Benchie — sounds like a broken record! She continues to show her superiority, with many lengths separating her from the competition. Now back to that broken record — coming in second once again was VOLANT BUCKEYE EXPRESS, ARM who had a little difficulty this weekend due to a sore foot. MARIAL'S RENFIELD PHALAROPE, ARM was a close third, while CH. MARIAL'S TRAYMATT SNOWMAN, ARM hauled in 4th place honors. A newcomer at Antioch — and proving that she has what it takes was Delphi Echo of Seymour, placing 5th and adding 5 ARM points to her total. (Echo is one major short of her AKC Championship!) Uruhu's Flying Fantasy, ARM rounded out the top six, while Heatherly's Isadorable, CDX and Volant Intermission Riff tied for 7th, receiving 2 ARM points each. SLADE'S EDIE AN O'LAZEBROOK was the high score puppy. This makes the third time Edie has won High Score Puppy honors, and she will add a lot as she enters the adult field soon. The second place puppy, also one of this year's better puppy racers, was NIGHT LEIGHT'S BURLAP. Third place went to a dog that has been near the top all year — Country's Sun. Beautiful trophies (what else from a TWSA meet???) were awarded to the top 10 adults, the top 3 puppies and a special award to the Briscoe' for longest distance traveled. The trophies were glassware with an etched whippet figure. Our thanks to those participating and helping and we hope it was a fantastic weekend for you.

SECRETARY'S REPORT MARY BETH ARTHUR In accordance with Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution and By-Laws of the American Whippet Club, all AWC members have by now received their Statement of Dues for Fiscal Year 1975 (January 1 — December 31, 1975). Dues are payable to the AWC Secretary on or before January 1, 1975. Memberships will be considered as lapsed and automatically terminated if dues remain unpaid 90 days after the first day of the Fiscal Year. However, members whose dues are unpaid as of January 1, 1975 (Postmark Deadline) will not be allowed to vote in the next annual election. This policy was established by unanimous vote of your Board of Directors on July 28, 1972. On or before January 15, 1975 members in good standing will receive the Slate of Candidates for the Board of Directors as nominated by this year's Nominating Committee, Patricia Dresser (Ohio) Chairman, Carroll Hayhurst (California) and Gail Volavka (New York). A complete list of members in good standing as of January 1, 1975 will be published in the next Whippet News. Since the last issue of the Whippet News, the following seven individuals have submitted membership applications to the AWC Secretary:
Before applicants are elected to membership, their credentials are reviewed by the Board of Directors of the American Whippet Club at a Board meeting. This allows the Board an opportunity to thoughtfully review and discuss each application, photocopies of which are provided every Board member prior to each meeting. To be elected, applicants must receive a favorable three-fourths vote of the Directors present at said meeting. As stated in the Constitution and By-Laws of the American Whippet Club, applicants must be 1) eighteen years of age or older, 2) in good standing with the American Kennel Club, and 3) in agreement to subscribe to the objectives of the American Whippet Club. In addition, the Board of Directors of the American Whippet Club require that all applicants be breeders and/or owners of Whippets for two years or more, which would indicate a sincere interest in the Breed. New applicants are urged to subscribe to the Whippet News, which is the official publication of the American Whippet Club. In this way, they will become more knowledgeable and familiar with Whippet activities pending an election decision by the Board of Directors. The present application for membership form was approved by the AWC Board of Directors in 1972 in accordance with Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution and By-Laws. It states the name and address of the applicant and carries the endorsement of two members, not of the same family. It also contains other questions and requests information that your Board considers crucial in order to arrive at an intelligent election decision. As mandated by Article IV, Section 1 of the AWC Constitution and By-Laws, the "general management of the Club's affairs shall be entrusted to the Board of Directors." Accordingly, it is important that we be thorough and careful in reviewing all new applications for membership. Thus we ask that each applicant together with endorsers, have their names printed in at least one issue of the Whippet News prior to an election decision by the board of Directors. The net result of this important procedure will be a stronger and more knowledgeable membership for the years ahead. As we welcome in a new year it is interesting to reflect upon the highlights of the past year's Whippet activities. The 1974 Western Specialty saw CH. HIGHLAND'S SEA CHANTY OF AANI owned by Gladys Cutter Tangen and Gloria Ross go Best of Breed under judge Mr. R. M. James. The Midwest Specialty was captured by CH. MISTY MOORS CHALMONDOLEY judged by Mrs. Patricia Speight. The Eastern Specialty was judged by Mr. Norman Ellis and his Best of Breed selection was CH. CHARMOLL CLANSMAN, owned by Mr. and Mrs. James Butt. Whippet racing for 1974 was dominated by two very fine racers — VAN ORSCHOT'S TORO and VOLANT BIG RED MACHINE. Each of these racers posted excellent records and were very seldom upset. There were several other fast Whippets that displayed good efforts but none matched the overall consistency of TORO and BIG RED MACHINE in 1974. As we approach 1975, President Fell, together with your entire Board of Directors invite your continued interest and support of the American Whippet Club. )(cur questions and suggestions are always welcome and indeed necessary if the Board of Directors is to do their best. In a national organization such as we have where the membership is spread over the entire country, effective communication is of utmost importance. Wishing you a safe and happy New Year. During the year she has won many friends, admirers and ribbons through her outstanding performances at ASFA sanctioned Lure Field Trials. Watch for her next year at the field trials and at the race track.
