Great Circle Tamara H-934078 By Meander Pilot x Ch. Great Circle Violet J. Birmingham 7/67 OBEDIENCE "RECALL" When asked to do a "History of Obedience" on short notice, I balked! History means research, accuracy, and statistics, and the time to gather them all together. Unless written with a genius far beyond my reach, it also in clines to be dry and boring. Obedience is NEVER boring and I will try to keep my recollections as ac curate as possible after thirty-five years. Obedience work has always been dear to my heart, and I think, to most who pursue it, because it embodies the ultimate in closeness with your dog. I can hear a howl immediately from my many friends in the hunting breeds who feel they share an equal companionship with their dogs, but there's a difference! In hunting the dog is concentrating on the chase, accepting only control and a minimum of direction, from the owner, while in Obedience you work together as a team, dependent on each other for a perfect performance. In hunting the end reward is to kill - the glorious flash of color and winged grace that is a pheasant or duck in flight, stilled in an instant; or to hold in one's hands, lifeless, the warm little furry body of a rabbit that moments before, with soft brown eyes and inquisitive, twitching nose, was adding charm and a flash of cottontail, to the landscape. Not so Obedience! Our patience (PRIME REQUISITE), understanding, time, and skill are rewarded by a happy dog, eyes sparkling, tail gently awag, watching eagerly for the slightest command; confident in his or her well- learned role, and ready, by responsiveness, for. any "curve" the judge may throw "our" way; secure in the knowledge that a mistake will bring only a firm but gentle correction, and a job well done will bring much loving praise. When "we" are successful we take home the coveted degrees CD - CDX - UD and maybe even a High Scoring in Trial, but it's the partnership with our dog that satisfies. Obedience work was introduced in the United States in the early 1930's by a very gracious, patrician, and charming lady, Mrs. Whitehouse Walker of Carillion Poodle fame, from New York state. Mrs. Walker had been in England in search of show and breeding stock and happened to see an Obedience demonstration. She was so impressed that she took motion pictures and gained much knowledge from those involved. Returning to the USA Mrs. Walker gathered a group of eight interested dog lovers at her home and suggested we watch the movies and consider introducing the sport to this country. Enthusiasm was immediate among us, and especially on the part of Mrs. Walker's kennel maid, Blanche Saunders, who from a simple farm girl, went on to become one of the leading authorities on Obedience; giving demonstrations at Rockefeller Center in New York City, and all over the country; writing several books on the subject and becoming a most beloved and respected judge - quite a fabulous achievement. Among the early enthusiasts, was Miss Frances Thord-Gray who did a great job with a nine year old Irish Terrier, no less! Also Mrs. Milton Erlanger, whose kennel manager, Mr. Henry Stoecker, did extremely well with the versa tile black standard poodle, "Ch. Pillicoc Rumplestiltskin". The first AKC licensed Obedience Test (then called) was held in 1936 at Mt. Kisco, New York and I had the pleasure and honor of being the judge. Considering the newness of the venture the work was excellent. Obedience gained in popularity by leaps and bounds and spread throughout the country. Poodles, Dobermans, and German Shepherds, were the stars in the early days; but the only perfect score I, personally, ever gave, was to a black and white English Cocker Spaniel, whose joyous, faultless work was not to be denied and brought many honors to his trainer, Mr. Simpson, and owner, the beloved Mrs. Hartley Dodge, of Giralda fame. Obedience had its lighter moments, then as now, and one that delighted us all occurred at the Washington, D. C. Kennel Club show. There before a large audience, including diplomats and congressmen, Mrs. Walker, the picture of elegance, was working an apricot standard Poodle on scent-discrimination. After warming the article by rubbing it in her hands, she slipped it briefly under her arm, then placed it on the judge's extended clipboard and he in turn added it to the articles already on the floor. At the judge's signal Mrs. Walker sent her dog to retrieve. There was complete silence as everyone watched, fascinated, as the dog sniffed the articles and promptly selected the correct one. As he picked it up, a childish treble pierced the stillness "Gee, Mommy, that lady must stink strong!" Of course the place broke up. Dignity forgotten in a roar of laughter, which, of course delighted the Poodle! In all the early years, in the east, I never saw a Whippet in Obedience, though the Meander and Mardormere Whippets were doing well in Groups, and "running to the rag" racing was popular at some of the outdoor shows. With the help of Loretta Birmingham, Christine Cormany, Sybil Jacobs, Doris Wear, and Don 'Hap' Frames, in the short time allotted to preparing this article, I have gathered the following resume of Whippets in Obedience; but first I want to apologize sincerely, to anyone whose dog has been omitted. A year by year account was impossible, so I have tried to salute old timers, especially outstanding records, and 1970 degree winners. To the best of my knowledge one of the first, if not the first Whippet in Obedience in the east was "Meander Topaz", owned, trained and shown by Doris Wear, of Stoney Meadows fame. "Topaz" gained her CD quickly in 1948 and had two legs on her CDX when she was unfortunately killed in an accident. Luckily she had had one litter before starting her Obedience career and was the dam of the great "Ch. Stoney Meadows Masquerade". In the mid-West we have the dogs trained by Sybil Jacobs, coming along in 1953-1954. First was "Stepalong Late Speed" CD in October 1953 - then "Brown's White Hope" - April 195 )4, and "Whipoo's Silken Elegance" CD in December 1954. Following these in 1956-1957 was the truly outstanding "Ch. Whipoo's Whimsy", owner Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Hopkins, a triple winner - bench Champion - High Point racing winner and a CD at six months. A truly remarkable record for quality and versatility. On the West Coast the first Whippet to appear in Obedience was, I believe "Silversand of Lazeland" who achieved a perfect score in her first time out. This was around 1950. She was followed by "Picardia Priscilla" owned by Don Frames, who won her CD in 1955 CDX and UD in 1957. In 1957 "Ch. Piperkins Tawny Pipt" acquired a CD. In 1956 "Piperkins Prudence" had garnered a CD also. These dogs were owned and trained by the Frames who finished several others as well. There is neither time nor room to catalogue the years between, up to 1970. However it is worth mentioning that up to 1970 there have been but three UD Whippets - "Picardia Priscilla", mentioned above, and "Great Circle Tamara" and "Regalaire Racing Riot". The latter two were owned and trained by Loretta Birmingham. All three are pictured with this article. Likewise it seems worthy of note that only three Whippets have achieved High Scoring in Trial, over CD - CDX - and UD - all breeds competing. These are "Ch. Tonto of Flying W" owned by the Dunnagans, in 1969, at Los Alamos, N. M. - score 198 (Novice) - 21 dogs competing - in 1970 there were two - "Marial's Trespasser", owned by M. B. Arthur and B. Strauss, score 1991 (novice B) - 107 dogs competing in trial - and "Red Sails of Suntan", owned and trained by F. L. Page, score 197 1/2 (novice B) - 94 dogs competing in trial. 1970 was a good year and many promising Whippets started their Obedience career and will no doubt set new records of their own. We all know our problem in selling those puppies who aren't "show Stoppers", but the more Whippets we train and get out in competition, showing the public our breed's intelligence, verve, gaiety, and ability to surpass all other breeds in performance, the more the public will learn to appreciate them and want one for their own See you in the ring!
