INT. CH. WINGEDFOOT DOMINIC
Sire: Ch. Wingedfoot Wildfire
Dam: Speedlite Prunella
Breeder/Owner: Wendy T. Howell
Int. Ch. Wingedfoot Dominic, along with Great Circle Sand Flea, started the ball rolling again in the revival of Whippet racing in California.
Dominic was the first of two California racing whippets to ever win the Chicago International Races in 1960, he was also a prominent racer in California and U.S.A.
Dominic was a small fawn whippet approximately 19 1/2" at withers and weighing about 20 lbs. Size never seemed to get in the way of his winning and holding his own. In 1961 Dominic traveled to Holland and became Dutch National Racing Champion. I would venture to say Dominic was the most well traveled whippet of any of the pre A.R.M. Race Whippets - traveling to the Eastern United States, Europe and finally retiring to Ireland where he now lives.
Dominic, from what I understand, was quite a character among his other talents. It's been said that one of his favorite tricks was to escape from his crate or whatever at a dog show and seek out fellow exhibitor's lunches even if it entailed jumping into open car windows, eating what he liked best from their lunches.

Sire: Ch. Meander Robin
Dam: Whipoo's Silken Elegance CD
Breeder: & Mrs. L. Jacobs
Owner: Mr. & Mrs. E. B. Hopkins
Whimsey was a 20 1/2", 26 lb. white and fawn house pet that started his racing competition as a Champion-Companion Dog, having earned his CD at 6 months and his Championship at 9 months.
His short spectacular racing career began at 24 months and he never lost a race for two years. He could overcome a faulty start, leap his way out of a traffic jam, no motion was ever wasted and nothing could deter him once he set his course. He did most things with great zest and zeal.
The 1958 Chicago International was the first race meet in the east representing whippets from a cross section of the country. Whimsy has been clocked at 40 M.P.H.

EYLELAND PEPPERMINT BOY, whelped 6/22/58
Sire: Ch. Stoney Meadows Monocle
Dam: Aggie of Stoney Meadows Breeder: Ralph Eyles Owner: E. F. Kornblith
Peppermint Boy was just a natural born racer. He was a whippet that never was conditioned, he just hopped off the couch, went to the races and won. Peppermint Boy had a most unique running style, he resembled a slow moving rocking horse, never giving up ground of the lead he would have on the dogs in his race.
In 1963 Louis Pegram said: "Peppermint Boy was referred to all as the great
lovable and undefeated race star of 1961-1962. He does not have quite his usual
speed, but still is a great race dog regardless of competition."

Rollo is quite an old gentleman these days. Rollo was allowed to race as long as he wanted to running in a national point race in 1969 - last run- when he was nine years old, on two days
when the temperature was well into the 90's, plus at 11 years old still likes to have a run on the lure. Rollo is the sire of many top racing whippets and show champions. Rollo is sire of Best in Show bitch Ch. Kobald Formula I. Rollo became a show champion in four consecutive shows - 4, 1, 5, 5, including W.P. New England Specialty, Judge Donald Hostetter, and Best of Breed 1965 American Whippet Club Midwest Specialty, Judge Eugene Jacobs. Rollo won Chicago International Races in 1963 and was 2nd in 1961 and was top racing whippet in 1962-1963 U.S.A. He has distinguished himself for years in racing and showing.

AMERICAN & CANADIAN CH. SONNA ROCKABYE BABY CD
Sire: Am. & Can. Ch. Gypsy Kelly CD
Dam: Ch. Rockabye Black Mollie
Breeder: Mrs. E. J. Anson Owner: Mrs. Pamela Arthur
Rockabye Baby is a black masked red, 20 inches and 28 lbs. "Pickles" as she is better known is truly a great daughter of a great father. In the show rings, obedience ring and on the track she did everything that was asked of her.
In 1963 she went to Santa Barbara where she was high point winner. Her best time for 200 yards was 11.4 seconds. She made three straight generations of Champions who had won at Santa Barbara, Ch. White Acres Silver Spice, Ch. Gypsy's Kelly and herself. Pickles has produced many great dogs, the most noteworthy being Can. Ch. Rockabye Ember of Course A.R.M. Especially in her earlier litters, she was noticed for the number that she produced. Her largest of 13 living pups is still the record in Canada.

Owner: Jennifer Anson
AM. & CAN. CH. GYPSY KELLY CD
Kelly is a 22", 35 lb. fawn whippet. After the return of the whippet to British Columbia in 1957, Kelly was probably the irst really great whippet bred in the Canadian area. He was shown to his Canadian and American bench championships as well as his Canadian and American obedience by his owner, Jennifer Anson, when she was a junior handler. At the same time he established himself as one of the racing greats. He was 2nd high point to his sire, White Acres Silver Spice at Santa Barbara in 1959, and was high point there in 1960. Kelly had an easy going disposition and was a great dog to handle.

EYLELAND HANNAH Whelped 2/12/62
Sire: Stoney Meadows Epic
Dam: Ch. Great Circle Hester
Breeder: Barbara & Ralph Eyles
Owner: Lynnette T. Underwood
Hannah was the top race bitch in the U.S.A. for a long while dominating the Eastern Race world along with her brother Homer, most times taking turns beating each other. Lynne Underwood purchased Hannah in the 1960's for racing and reeding. In 1969 Hannah was bred to Can. Ch. Emberson of Course A.R.M. producing what is referred to in California as "Thee" litter.
Louis Pegram said of Hannah: "She breaks very fast and it is seldom that she is beaten. Hannah beats the best winning a II of her four races, she is virtually the perfect racing machine who always breaks fast and always runs only a straight course. If the race is 200 yards Hannah only runs 200 yards. I have yet to see her waste yardage in a race since she was a very young puppy racer. Hannah also has a 5 point AKC Major.

CH. WHITE ACRES CAROL'S FANCY
Sire: Pennyworth Tumbleweed
Dam: Ch. White Acres Snow Flurry
Breeder: White Acres Kennels
Owner: Carol Lee Baumgartner
Fanny is a medium small, long legged Whippet bitch with tremendous personality and racing ability. During her racing career she was among the top ten and No. 1 Race Bitch at one time.
One of the most unique things to see was if Fanny could not get through or by a whippet blocking her way from the finish line she would drop back, swing to the side and head for the finish line like a bolt of lightning. It was on such occasions as this that you could see the tremendous racing strength she possessed, which also showed in her coursing ability while on visits to California.
She is about the only whippet who also doubles as a pheasant dog during the pheasant season. She truly points her game one leg up in true pointing form.

Sage, half brother to Ch. White Acres Carol's Fancy was a top race dog in the 1960's, making quite a team with Fanny. They took turns beating each other. Sage traveled to California on several occasions winning Santa Barbara and Fresno in 1964.
Sage showed great speed and ability. While visiting California he had the opportunity to go coursing. A portion of Sage's race career was cut short when his owner was in the Armed Services.

URRAY CHIEFTAIN
Sire: Rockabye Gunslinger
Dam: Can. Ch. Whirlwind Genevieve Breeder: Richard Webster
Owner: William Turpin Sr.
Chief, a silver fawn medium size whippet of slight stocky build was among the top running whippets in Canada and Washington in 1965 and 1966. Chief traveled to Santa Barbara with Ember.
Chief was runner up to Ringo, giving Ringo quite a run for his money. One local Canadian Vet calls Chief the best conditioned whippet he has ever seen in either Britain or North America.
Chief's career was disrupted due to an accident with the box door. It took quite a while to get him to break well from the boxes again, which caused him to lose several yards to the other dogs which cost him the loss of the race. Chief just never did as well after the accident.

GRAVE DIGGER
Sire:
Dam:
Breeder: Ralph Eyles
Owner: Louis Pegram
Grave Digger, a large fawn brindle whippet, was always in the Top Ten at all race meets with consistent placements in the Top Ten U.S.A. It has been said if Grave Digger had ever put his mind to running a straight line, he might have been a winner of a race meet. Grave Digger has run more yards in
his racing career than possibly any of the Pre A.R.M. Racing greats. One of his other favorite pastimes was singing in hotel and motel rooms. Once while a guest at the Baumgartners' home he was bedded down for the night near the heater with vents leading to all the rooms of the house. When he started to sing it was Grave Digger in stereo. Louis Pegram: "Grave Digger was a very strong dog but temperamental. He could have been one of our great whippets but lacked track sense."

HASTY ROYAL RED
Sire: Ch. Rouget O'Lazeland
Dam: Hasty Pearl
Breeder/ Owner: W. D. Backman Sr.
Hasty Royal Red, an attractive red fawn male, son of Ch. Rouget O'Lazeland, has more than proved his talents as a racing whippet. Over the years he has raced and is still charging on as a veteran racer with his numerous racing wins and placements at A.W.C. National Point Races and placements in the Top Ten of the United States and Canada.
Hasty Royal Red was a strong competitive racer and still is at the age of 8 1/2 years. Recently he was high point whippet at a National Point Race held in Hamilton, Ohio on October 9 and 10, 1971, with a good size entry.

Sire: Traymatt Nolasco
Dam: Rockabye Black Mollie
Breeder: Paul Sykes
Owner: Marilyn Barlow & Susan Wing
"Shelly" is a blue bitch weighing 24 lbs. and 19" at the withers, not as large as some but mighty. She ran with the top racing whippets in the U.S.A. and Canada. Shelly seemed to come into season at times that caused her to miss some major race meets. Before her retirement Shelly earned 12 A.R.M. points. She began the early part of her career running with the pre A.R.M. racing greats.
Shelly's ardent admirer over the years was Ringo's Ringo. It was obvious to everyone knowing both that he had quite a case on her.

RACING
"There are not ten definite outstanding Whippets that raced in 1970. The following Whippets would definitely be the top 13. Many of the very top dogs beat each other on occasions and, of course, many of the West Coast Whippets at no time met with the Midwest Whippets. The dogs are not necessarily listed in the order of their running ability. Scram Whisper dominated the field until she was disqualified. The next five Whippets took turns beating each other. Here are your top 13, but it would be difficult to eliminate any of the bottom five without considerable argument.
1 - Scram Whisper - Klintworth-Blackstone
2 - Scram I'm Fourst - Fischer-Blackstone
3 - Can. Ch. Emberson of Course - Fraser
4 - Ch. Pinetops Opening Knight - Hammond
5 - Change in Destiny - Pegram
6 - Fortuna Fair Annet - Robinson
7 - Renfield Lady O'Lazebrook - Murray-Gutilla
8 - Brenda's Champagne - Clift
9 - Whirlaways Apache - Hayhurst
10 - R. Gingerbread Boy - Kinch
11 - Riverdale Charmaine – Purvis
12 - Brenda's Brandy - Clift
13 - Magnificent Lance - Grimm
Sincerely, Louis Pegram"
SCRAM WHISPER
Sire: Whistle Dixie
Dam: Sege Nice Girl
Breeder: S. Blackstone
Owner: H. Klintworth& S. Blackstone
Scram Whisper as a puppy had a questionable future, the breeder was considering putting her down un less a suitable home could be found for her. Whisper became the proud possession of 4 years old Dane, youngest son of Harlan and Virde Klintworth.
Whisper's career has been unusual from the start running a few practice puppy races and competing as a senior puppy with adult whippets at A.W.C. National point races to gain experience.
Whisper continued on at her young age to become one of the fastest whippets in North America. Whisper is a lithe, soft eyed lean athlete who vaporizes over the 200 yard race track. Whisper is not only an A.R.M. racing champion, but a loveable, devoted family pet, sharing her domain and affection with an aged saluki.
Victor Renner, A.W.C. president, Marysville, Ohio, in the Santa Barbara News Press July 1970 says: "Scram Whisper in fact has never been defeated in her prime and is considered the fastest whippet in America, running 11.2 seconds."

Scram I'm Fourst is litter mate to Scram Whisper. She won her A.R.M. title in 1970. Her race career really started in the late 1969's with a bang, since that time she's been consistent in the top ten at race meets. She's a black brindle with dark flashing curious eyes and lots of fun to live with.

CHANGE IN DESTINY
Sire: Ch. Pennyworth Would You Believe
Dam: Ch. Legend O'Lazeland
Breeder: Pennyworth Kennels - Louis Pegram
Owner: Louis Pegram
Change in Destiny is a dog with
great speed and stamina. He breaks
very quickly from the box and is
usually in the lead at the 100 yard
mark when showing his best racing
efforts. Destiny, known as Deadpan
in the kennel, has been troubled with poor vision since a puppy. This partial lack of vision has troubled him during his entire racing career. He will be retired from racing at the end of the year.
Change In Destiny is out of Ch. Legend O'Lazeland who produced many outstanding show and race Whippets to include Ch. Pennyworth Mother Goose, Ch. Tailor Made, Sir. Winston of Woodlands and Spill No Whiskey.

RENFIELD LADY O'LAZELAND A.R.M.
Sire: Canesco's Flying Saucer
Dam: Ch. Bettebrook Bonita
Breeder: J.R. Hargis & Victor Renner
Owners: T.A. Murray & A.J. Gutilla
Lady is one of those Whippets that thoroughly enjoy people and activities – always anxious for a car ride and 'the new and interesting, things that make life exciting. She is quite forward and adapts quickly to her environment. However, she is possessive and will defend what she considers to belong to her, such as house and car.
A little under 20 inches and weighing 26 to 27 pounds, she is considered by most judges to be extremely sound, but a little too long in brisket and loin for a good show bitch. She is most thankful to have acquired her one point and three reserves at major shows.
Personally, I believe that of all the race champions I have handled, Lady is the fastest. Unfortunately she has two bad habits - running the extreme right side (from the box) of the track, and trying to break from the box when the lure moves instead of when the box opens. In her few starts I believe she has proven herself capable of holding her own with the best.
