WALKER WOULD YOU BELIEVE 1,000 IN 1970? by Louis Pegram October of 1970 will mark my 40th year in Whippets and 42 years with racing and coursing Greyhounds. It is extremely difficult to put in words the many changes that have taken place in the world of Whippets during the past 39 years. Just why the Whippet is not a more popular breed with the dog-loving public has long been the subject of many disputed opinions among Whippet breeders. During these past years, there have been periods when the Whippet seemed almost certain to grow in popularity as a true multipurpose breed with the American public. Then interest would wane for one reason or another with certain Whippet breeders or Whippet clubs, and again there would be dormant periods of growth and interest in the breed. It can be truthfully said that the Whippet, during the period 1920 through 1960, was not a breed judged on his own merit, but a breed controlled by the many varied opinions of a very, very few owners and breeders. There have been numerous occasions during the past 39 years that I have made the statement, "When we register 1,000 Whippets or more per year, then the Whippet can truly take his rightful place in the realm of pure-bred dogs based on his true ability." The American Kennel Club records show that in 1930 - 54 Whippets were registered, 1940 - 77, 1950 - 80, and 1960 - 184. The Whippet population was so very small in the U.S.A. following the depression of the 1930's that the American Kennel Club opened their stud book of registrations to the Whippet on all unregistered Whippets approved by Miss F. Julia Shearer and your writer. Even with this relaxing of requirements, registrations did not increase greatly. At the same time the American Kennel Club was registering less than 80 Whippets per year, the Maryland Whippet Breeders Association, Baltimore, Maryland , had accurate records and up to three-generation pedigrees on over 300 Whippets some of which were registered with the American Kennel Club. The Maryland Whippet Breeders Association was made up of Whippet owners who bred, showed, and raced Whippets. When night trotting races were legalized in Maryland, this organization fell apart with the discontinuance of Whippet racing operating under local county option in several areas surrounding Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington, D. C. During the following years, interest in Whippets continued at a slow pace as clearly indicated by American Kennel Club registration figures. The Whippet in England has enjoyed greater early growth in popularity than has the Whippet in America. The Kennel Club's Stud Book ( England) showed 1528 Whippets registered in 1960 versus 184 in America for the same year. Here again there are probably many opinions for this great spread in the Whippet population between these two countries. Factually, some of the major reasons would be that the English look to the Whippet as a true pet, while certain hard-core American breeders had their own divided opinions on size, appearance of the Whippet, who should own a Whippet, how the Whippet should be used, etc. The results were that the almost unknown Whippet in America received more negative publicity than factual publicity advising the public of the many merits of the Whippet. The last ten years has seen the Whippet move into a more prominent spot in the pure-bred dog world. The very small number of Whippets in America has made the job of expanding interest in the Whippet extremely slow and on occasions difficult. The increased number of all-breed dog shows has made the Whippet a very desirable dog for exhibition purposes. The expanded American Whippet Club program of three specialty shows and nine supported entry shows has brought about a closer understanding among those Whippet breeders who exhibit in the show ring. The West Coast 1969 American Whippet Club Specialty drew an all-time record for this organization of 106 Whippets. It is my belief that more Whippets are shown in proportion to the number of Whippets registered than is the case with any other breed registered with the American Kennel Club. This speaks especially well for the growth of the Whippet population in America from a quality standpoint. Whippet racing has held its own during the past five years, but there has been no great increase in the number of Whippets racing or in new local groups offering Whippet racing. Historically, most local Whippet groups, regardless of their activities in the breed, have had great problems in maintaining organization and support of their membership. Perhaps Whippet owners and breeders are no worse than other local breed groups in maintaining organization, growth, and unity. Until such a time, however, as those people interested in the Whippet, whether it be as a race dog, show dog, or as a pet, can learn to live together for the betterment of the breed, progress will be limited. Whippet racing has shown improvement from the standpoint of better racing animals. No great improvement has been noted in many areas on constructive expansion of race meetings, improving racing equipment, or in securing a great number of breeders, not one- or two-dog Whippet owners, who take interest in replacing their racers who are no longer of racing quality. It must be remembered that Whippet racing is highly competitive. Whippet racing should be based on factual performance with little personal opinion or personal advantage involved. It requires many more Whippets to make a successful race meeting than is the case to have a successful show or obedience entry. Interest in obedience is showing an increase with Whippet owners. It is now clearly indicated that certain Whippets do respond quickly to obedience training without interfering with their requirements to be competitive in the show ring or on the race track. The real growth in Whippets can be expected when there is a realistic demand for quality pet Whippet puppies. The demand for Whippet puppies is increasing in certain areas with California and the heavily populated East Coast showing the most progress. There were numerous cases in certain areas during 1969 where well-bred above-average Whippet puppies were advertised on a long-term basis at Very reasonable prices; yet, there was no demand for these attractive youngsters. In most cases you can sell Whippet puppies if you try hard enough; but the uninformed public, who knows nothing of the many merits of the Whippet, is not knocking down doors of Whippet breeders demanding Whippet puppies for pet purposes. It is my belief we will finally register 1,000 Whippets with the American Kennel Club in 1970. The American Kennel Club registered 680 Whippets in 1966, 655 in 1967, 806 in 1968, and 504 from January through July of 1969. This very steady growth during the past two years, sparked by a very strong demand for young Whippets of show quality, would indicate that 1,000 registrations for Whippets in 1970 is a very definite possibility. 1,000 is not necessarily a magic number in Whippets. This number is, however, a realistic basis to increase interest in the breed that will give us additional needed Whippets to improve the number and quality of race Whippets, the needed extra source of supply of quality Whippets to secure additional prestige in the show ring, and most important enough Whippets in America to let the pet-owning public realize there is such a versatile breed as the Whippet. The American Whippet Club in 1969 had its largest and most enthusiastic membership ever. Membership and Whippet population seemed to be about equally spread between the East, Midwest, and West Coast. This is an extremely healthy situation. The Whippet News, edited by Mrs. Christine Cormany, 24819 Eshelman, Lomita , California , continues to be the major factor in communications between those people who are interested in improving the breed. It seems most important, each time you sell a puppy or meet someone who is interested in Whippets, that you have them subscribe to the 'Whippet News, which is the official publication of the American Whippet Club. The period between 1970 and 1980 with the thoughtful, cooperative support of modern-day Whippet owners/breeders gives every indication that the Whippet will become a more major factor in dogs, registered by the American Kennel Club. It is my hope that breeders will continue to promote the breed in keeping the Whippet a true sporting type sight hound who should be a combination of show dog, race dog, and pet. NO. CALIF. WHIPPET FANCIERS ASSOC. Pleasanton , Calif. Southern Invaders Ambush the North - Lance Nabs his First National Point Race Win. Sunday, October l9, 1969 marked a day of high achievement for west Coast Whippet Fanciers. A highly successful Whippet Match and Obedience Trial, along with a special Movement Class", was followed by a thrilling rational Point Race meeting. The meet was held on the beautiful race track at Alameda County Fairgrounds. The ground was heavy after a down pour of deluge proportions during the week, but after a nice harrowing job by the groundskeeper, all that were affected were the actual race times. WHIRLAWAY'S MAGNIFICE NT LANCE romped to four high point race victories to emerge number one for the day with 4 Award of Merit points. It was his first big win, and one would easily surmise, not his last. MADCAP DUSTY ROAD and C7. STRATHOAK SU NSTAR had a merry battle for second place and the other two award of merit points. Dusty came out the best by edging Sunstar in their last two high point meetings. Sunstar won his first "B" race by going from the 41 box to the outside lane behind dogs and then flashing speed to romp hare. HOLLYPARK GAMBLING MAN completed a 1-4 sweep by the Southern invaders by running slightly off the pace of the 3 leaders, The Northern contingent had to be content with some good performances on the part of M ERCUR Y' S APACHE TEARS, coming back to his Santa Clara form to finish 5th. SNOOP THE DROOP gaining 6th of a very strong performance, tieing with PETER WHEAT who was in the Top Ten for the seventh straight time Peter 'beat the box" to finish second to lance in the first high point race (dangerous on the front end a s they say). FRISCO, NICHOLAS, SHALOM and GOLDEN GAZELLE all made admirable efforts during the day. Walter Matheny was surprised by a birthday party before the races, and champagne and cake were served. Walter made up for lost time by doing just a great job on the P.A. system keeping the racers moving at double-tim. Four programs with 30 dogs were run off in 2 1/2 hours. RENFIELD LADY O ' LAZEBROOK AND SCRAM WHYSPER TIE FOR FIRST PLACE HONORS AT MARYSVILLE NATIONAL RACE MEET, October 25 & 26, 1969. By Day Backman A large entry, extremely keen competition, and glorious weather were all "the order of the day" for the 1969 closing session of the Mid-West racing season. An entry of 73 starters participated in four complete heats of National Racing Rules and Regulations in addition to four special 250 yard races. It is always good to see many familiar faces and equally nice to see new faces. At Marysville, we were particularly happy to welcome Mr. Paul Fraser, British Columbia , and. his dog EMB ERSON OF COURSE. "Sonny" is no stranger to any of us and especially to the Marysville Meet as he very royally clobbered all of us with a most spectacular win last year, RENFIELD LADY O 'LAZEBROOK and SCRAM WHISPER tied with 25 points each and both bitches were in excellent conditions. A run-off resulted with LADY on top as she is more lure conscious than WHISPER. WHISPER quit the lure about 25 feet from the finish-line, thus ending the contest. EMBERSON finished second high point and was the Opposite Sex winner. I have seen SONNY run in Marysville and recently in Santa Barbara and felt that he was not giving his all in Marysville until the last race. RYHN NEY HARLEQUIN VIC and RIVERDALES" CHARMAINE tied for third high point racer, VIC ran his first three heats well but jockeyed poorly in the fourth heat. FAIT will be a top contender next year, this bitch is still a puppy and with a bit more experience, will be hard to beats She breaks well and has a long natural and easy stride, SCRAM I PM FIRST, CHANGE IN DESTINY and SPRINGDALE SATIN DELI NE will bear watching next year. DESTINY cut to his pad and had to be scratched in the fourth heat with 14 points. TITAN H030, a marvelous running dog, was once again the victim of his ails, he had a second toe removed this summer and because of soreness, had to be scratched. Bill Backman, Sr., ran the Marysville Futurity again this year and dogs with asterisks after their name, made full payment and were Futurity contestants. Dill has a report on the Futurity elsewhere in this issue so won't elaborate except to clear a misunderstanding. Any adult racing Whippet wishing to enter the Futurity must make his payments to the Futurity Supervisor, but he must also enter the Race Meet, Futurity payments do no insure entry to the Meet and without Meet entrance, you are not eligible for the Futurity° A big thank you to all of you who helped run a very smooth-moving meet. The following is a report on the Marysville Futurity which was run on October 25 & 26, 1969 at Ohio Marysville, Dividing $540.00 by 232 (Total number of points) equals $2.3275, the value of each point.
W.D. Backman Gary Purvis, Committee 1969 WHIPPET RACE SUMMARY by Louis Pegram 1969 will go on record as a year of exciting Whippet racing with emphasis on quality racing. There were 16 race meetings held under Official Rules and Regulations for National Whippet Racing with one November meeting yet to he reported. Northern California showed the greatest gains in national organized Whippet race meetings, while local Whippet groups located in the state of Indiana showed the greatest growth in local activity. Other sections of the country showed no great increase in any type of Whippet race activities over previous years. Sectional competition showed EMBERSON OF COURSE dominating racing in the Pacific Northwest, while CH PINETCPS OPENING KNIGHT was the top racer in California. These two speedsters met at Santa Barbara, California, with CH. PINETOPS OPENING KNIGHT showing to a slight advantage over EMBERSON OF COURSE The Midwest was loaded with Grade A racers in 1969. The great campaigner, TITAN HOBO, again proved an easy winner at Chicago and continued his winning ways until old injuries again slowed down his great speed. RENFIELD LADY O ' LAZEBROOK moved into Grade A competition with a victory at St, Louis, Missouri , and tied for high honors at Marysville, Ohio. FORTUNA FAIR ANNET showed brilliant speed in winning high point honors at Champaign, Illinois, and tied for high score with the very fast, but inconsistent, BRENDA'S CHAMPAGNE, at Cincinnati, Ohio. CAESAR was the winner at Antioch, Illinois, while the veteran Award winner, SPRING INTRIGUE, continued to win his share of Grade A and high point races. The race bitch, SCRAM WHISPER, when she runs an honest race, appears to outclass any Whippet she meets in regular races run under Official Rules and Regulations for National Whippet Racing. There was no standout racer in 1969 that might be considered as the top American racer. EMBERSON OF COURSE and CH. PINETOPS OPENING KNIGHT both competed in the Midwest. They both turned in fine performances, but did not defeat the top Midwest racers. The top Midwest racers did not take part in West Coast racing. 1969 must go down in the record books as a year of outstanding performances by many of the top grade racers, but no one racer could establish his or her superiority as a true national track champion. Puppy racing was also outstanding in number of puppies racing as well as quality of puppy racing. Puppy races in the Midwest are superior in performance to the adult Grade C races of some five years past. The extension of the age limit for puppies to 14 months has done much to up-grade puppy racing. The three youngsters who advanced most rapidly when moving into adult racing in 1969 were RIVERDALE CHARMAINE, CHANGE IN DESTINY, and BRENDA'S BRANDY. 1969 saw four additional Whippets earn their Award of Racing Merit Certificates. These outstanding racers are CH. MARIAL'S JELLYBEAN, C.D., CAESAR, EMBERSON OF COURSE, and the first female to join this select group of racers, CAN. CH. ROCK-A-BYE EMBER OF COURSE. Total Award of Racing Merit winners, covering the period 1967 through 1969, now number eight. It would appear the following racers stand an excellent chance of joining this select group in 1970: PENFIELD LADY O'LAZEBROOK, WHIRLAWAYS MAGNIFICENT LANCE, FORTUNA FAIR ANNET, BRENDA'S CHAMPAGNE, and SCRAM WHISPER. Virtually everyone in the Whippet industry would greatly enjoy seeing CANADIAN and AMERICAN CH. SING'N LITTLE BLUE GIRL win her Award of Racing Merit Certificate. This little bitch has great speed as indicated in her battle for high honors with PINETOPS OPENING KNIGHT at Santa Barbara in 1968. Time may have passed this fine little competitor by, but we will be rooting for her in 1970. Those people operating race meetings under Official Rules and Regulations for National Whippet Racing deserve much credit for the hard work that goes into making a successful race meeting. Trophies in most cases were most attractive; starting boxes are now very similar in type; and lure pacing on the whole was good. We still have numerous failures based on equipment breakdown and every effort is being made to overcome this problem. It would be well for all owners, who enjoy Whippet racing, to review results of race meetings on a point basis, as well as results of a Whippet's performance, in each of his four races. This information, plus Award of Racing Merit points, gives a factual picture of Whippet racing as it existed in America and British Columbia in 1969. *Ch. Marial's Jellybean, C.D. is the first Whippet to officially fill the three objectives of the Whippet, racing under Rules and Regulations for National Whippet Facing, as being outstanding as a racer, show dog, and obedience trained bet. Early season form would place this racer with the very top racers in the Midwest for 1969.
